***New York*** (1 Viewer)

This is true but one silver lining to all this is I have seen zero parking tickets written up. I did not see a single meter maid in weeks.

I can't even imagine all the lost revenue in taxes, tickets, etc that the city is facing right now.
We were just talking about this on the drive back. Once this is over, I think the cops will be out in force making up lost revenue.

So, we had to go in so my wife could get the mail for incoming checks. She works in the garment district. I sat in the car for about 15 minutes waiting for her and wow, probably about 80% of the people that were walking around were homeless or in some sort of mental duress. It was bizarre. That area isn't great to begin with but it was kinda shocking. Not as bad as we drove up to the bridge in better areas. I watched one guy use a pay phone, no mask, no gloves, just like any other day.

Just learned our nanny has it.  We have been paying her but not using her services for last two and half  weeks now so we are in the clear but feel really bad for her.  She has been with us since my daughters were six months old (they are now 7) and part of our family at this point.  So far it sounds mild but still very worried for her.

According to her she has been out of the house very little except for necessary grocery/shopping runs.  This is really widespread in NYC at this point so be very careful.

Uncle in Westchester has it. He's 10 days in and doing better, says he feels the end of the virus for him is near (knock on wood).

if you don't mind divulging ...

his age? did he have any known underlying conditions?

appreciate it, either way
No, he's pretty healthy, 65 is his age. He married my aunt about 15 years ago, so not my uncle since I'm a kid, but family now nonetheless. I wouldn't use him as the standard case, tbh. His mother is 95 and smokes and drinks like a monster, so he prob has some superb genes. My aunt who has high cholesterol (62) never tested, she said she felt a little under the weather for a few days, but is back to normal. I'd assume she had it since they live together.

thanks, GB  :hifive:

best wishes to them both, and to you and the fam in Florida ✌

just got laid off, so no need to hang out here "just in case" my job sites reopen.

likely going to MD on sunday if they don't close #### down here and there.

we'll have to rent a car... an expense I"m not excited about without a paycheck. that's a con for me.

otherwise... what are your guys thoughts?
That sucks.  Hearing that news from a lot of people which just sucks.

Personally, I would go for a trip down there.  Will you need the car when you are down there or just to get there.  Imagine renting a car long-term would be get very expensive quick.

We'd need a car down there. No other way of getting there too.

Sorry to hear Flop.  Hopefully, things will get back to normal sooner than later.

As for the rental, my advice would be don't rent in Manhattan.  Much cheaper options outer borough or in NJ.   A little more effort involved but worth it for a long duration.  All of this may have changed post CV but I just remember ridiculous quotes in the city of $100+/per day.  Turo and other car sharing apps may also be viable.

Good stuff.

We normally take the train to Wilmington DE and rent a car there for around 30/day for the rest of the trip OC. Not taking the train this time, but doing a one way rental to salsbury (closer to the house) and renting another car from there at cheaper rates

sorry to hear about the job, flop - best wishes to you and yours on your bug out to MD, it's the smart move ✌

i'll be here when ya get back, cocktails on me 🍻

Now considering NoVa...renting a house and being near her family with 3 drs in Fairfax Co...feel better about getting treatment and not getting lost in the system in that setup. Also uncertain about health care at the beach house in MD.

Sorry to hear that good luck.  at least in MD you will be nearby numerous hospitals but have a little more space to socially distance yourself.

Have you ever spent a significant amount of time away from NYC with your family?

We’re nearing 3 weeks at this point. Our previous longest run away from New York was 10 days. What I can say for my family is that we’re so much happier as a family outside of NYC. Circumstances provided, we couldn’t be happier. It’s really been eye opening to see how much better we function with space, a yard, fresh air, fields, etc etc...Silver lining, idk.

I think a few trends will take shape after this is over, with commercial real estate being a big loser. Being that companies are or will be realizing things can be done as efficiently in a virtual environment, office space demand will shrink. With more of us being in a wfh environment, the need to stay in NYC will also shrink.

Even with paycuts when we emerge on the other side of this, the quality of life away from NYC is truly superior. I obviously like being within 4 blocks of everything I need, but a 5 minute car ride is  worthwhile tradeoff.

IDK, looking for positives right now, tough for all of us to find, but I think I found one for my family. Good luck in NOVA or MD, hopefully getting outside of NYC will be a breath of fresh air for you and the fam, it was for us.

Don't mean to discount your experience at all FC, but it may not be the location but the situation that is making you feel like that. I'm still in the same 2 BR apt during all of this and I can confidently say that strictly as a parent (so ignoring all the terrible #### going on in the world), I've never been happier and less stressed.

I never would have thought I'd say that 3 hours into a quarantine much less almost 3 weeks in.

I've been thinking about it a lot and having just accepted that this is our new normal for the time being has been so freeing. It’s going to be a challenge to try and maintain this mindset once things get back closer to normal, whenever that is, but I’m really going to try.

Yeah...all respect to FC and glad this temp move has opened his eyes to moving out. Good stuff about the commercial real estate market too...could very well be true.

Other posts over the years have led me to believe...and highlighted by the choice of words- "the need to stay in NYC will also shrink"- that FC never really wanted to be here in the first place.

We've never been here because we need to out of some kind of external necessity. feel like it's always been in our dna (just speaking of the wife and I); we genuinely love living here, small apt, urban density warts and all. We both moved and stayed because of an internal need.

At first we were concerned how this will affect selling our house but now think that there will be a demand for something only 20 minutes outside the city, with a nice little yard and  a garage, walkable for almost anything you need. It was already starting to go up in price due to influx from Brooklyn but this should at least keep the price at about where it was before the virus. We're hoping to still get around 800k for it.

I have to stay in NYC until my daughter graduates in 2026. Hope to be back in Michigan by July ‘26.

(this was my position pre-Corona)

That's awesome.  I had a similar feeling when I first left NYC.  Being able to really breathe and have personal space was something I didn't realized I was missing.  I do miss the energy and constant buzzing of the city but with a budding family those things become less and less important.  Hope everyone out there finds something that works for them.

From my daughters grade school principal

Hello PS 11 Families,

I am sure that you have all heard that schools may be "in session" during our planned Spring Break. As of today I have not received any official notifications from the Department of Education about schedule changes for April. As soon as I do I will reach out to all of you. Please know that if we will be in session during our planned break, our amazing staff will design learning for students that will be flexible for all families. As always, I hope that you are well and I hope to SEE you all SOON.

Is that through HS? Why?
She starts her [10th year at MMAC &] fifth year of preprofessional ballet this fall. ETA: She loves grass but she ain’t leaving before then.

By 2026 I’ll know if she’s going to University or wants to straight into performance art.

House is free, at least.
Sorry to hear about getting laid off.  I love the idea of getting away, and would do so myself if I could afford it now.  Getting the house for free would definitely make it worthwhile IMO.  That's the main expense.  You will need to eat and pay your electric bill, etc... either way.

Yeah... And car rental. Still have to consider rent in my NYC apt too.

My post about needing to be here hasn't sat well with me...feel like it can be construed as judgemental- which wasn't my intention.

Apologies in advance to gb FC if taken that way.

You have to pay rent, eat food, and pay all other standard bills either way.  If the only added expense is renting a car, and getting away would help you and your family's mental and physical health, then I would go for it.  You might even make up some of the added expense of renting a car by eating less expensive food if you order out since it's so expensive in NYC, especially your part of NYC.

Thanks man.

We haven't ordered prepared food since this started- every meal prepared at home. I guess that's already a cost savings.

Saw an article that the hospital ship only had 15 patients due to stringent navy protocol. Non covid, iirc.

Didn't know javits was going to be for covid.
Hmmm..I thought it was always planned for Covid patients but apparently it was just approved yesterday by Trump, at the request of Cuomo, for that use.

Yup, that ship is empty.  That thing is really just a publicity stunt as it is not built to handle infectious diseases but battlefield injuries so what it is good for is not needed for at this point.  Also, crew lives in bunks and many of hospital beds are in bunk setting.  If the virus spreads on that ship the entire crew will be infected very quickly.  Of course, imagine the ship gets infected anyway as I have read reports of that people are showing up with symptoms of heart attack but it is actually Covid.

The Feds control the protocol for both Comfort & Jacob Javits. Agree with @Redwes25 - the former is just a PR stunt, JJ might end up being useful.

We’re a few days away from running out of ventilators. That’s the biggest challenge rn.

I don't think the Comfort is a publicity stunt at all and will be put to full use.
Michael Dowling: It’s a joke

With New York placed under lockdown, there are less patients suffering from car accidents and gunshot wounds or other accidents requiring emergency care. Therefore, there are fewer non-virus patients to send to the U.S.N.S. Comfort, as the city copes with thousands of people infected with the virus, Dowling said.

"It's pretty ridiculous," he said. "If you're not going to help us with the people we need help with, what's the purpose?"

I don't care what he thinks.
