Finally have approval to use the Comfort for Covid-19 yesterday. After 10 days they have 41 patients, 5 for the virus. In LA the Mercy has 11 patients.Yup, that ship is empty. That thing is really just a publicity stunt as it is not built to handle infectious diseases but battlefield injuries so what it is good for is not needed for at this point. Also, crew lives in bunks and many of hospital beds are in bunk setting. If the virus spreads on that ship the entire crew will be infected very quickly. Of course, imagine the ship gets infected anyway as I have read reports of that people are showing up with symptoms of heart attack but it is actually Covid.Saw an article that the hospital ship only had 15 patients due to stringent navy protocol. Non covid, iirc.
Didn't know javits was going to be for covid.

Tbh, I don't see how it's a good idea to mix covid with non on a ship. Finally have approval to use the Comfort for Covid-19 yesterday. After 10 days they have 41 patients, 5 for the virus. In LA the Mercy has 11 patients.
Javits has 60 patients, all Covid-19.

The same day they opened up Comfort they also announced the first crew member who tested positive.I'm sure the ship is better equipped for various medical emergencies but with only 60 people currently at Javits, I don't know why they had to open Comfort up to Covid patients.
At least he doesn't have to leave home. The same day they opened up Comfort they also announced the first crew member who tested positive.
Yeah, I can imagine that there will be concerns about New Yorkers for a while in other areas. We're expecting it in Boise but will quarantine as well for 2 weeks. Sorry people...life goes on.Btw... We bugged out to Maryland yesterday.
We'll see how it goes- brought a lot of supplies and groceries with us. But I'm most concerned about groceries if we can't have them delivered. Don't want to leave the house for two weeks, so don't want to go to stores. We have the car for three weeks...can cut short or extend as needed.
And we got word from the MIL that the immediate neighbor who we've been friendly with over the years coming here- these are small lots in a community, so houses are close- he emphatically didn't want us to come. Understandable. But it's not like we're going to be walking around the neighborhood licking doorknobs.
We've heard again from the MIL that her longtime permanent resident neighbor/friend at the beach house is furious we came down. So and so NYers shouldn't be leaving their state. Very true.Yeah, I can imagine that there will be concerns about New Yorkers for a while in other areas. We're expecting it in Boise but will quarantine as well for 2 weeks. Good luck flop!
yup, you see varying degrees of social distancing even on Jersey shore. Can't imagine what MD shore is like. We've heard again from the MIL that her longtime permanent resident neighbor/friend at the beach house is furious we came down. So and so NYers shouldn't be leaving their state. Very true.
If we hadn't isolated ourselves for the last three weeks to make sure we were symptoms free, we wouldn't have. I just swapped rental cars (nyc price for one day is half the price of three weeks down here). Hit a mega Walmart on the way back to the house with the decision to very carefully load up as much as possible for our next three weeks so we don't have to leave the house.
Imagine the Unabomber wearing a mask and gloves...that was me strolling through walmart. Now imagine maybe 1/5 other people just wearing masks. None of the employees were.
I think neighbor Gene has bigger problems to worry about than the people from NYC who have been scrubbing down every piece of food, box of stuff and ourselves every time we open the door of apt to receive it.
I'm honestly shocked at how casually the people here are taking it. Basically where we were at the beginning of March when we were being told by Cuomo and di Blasio and the local officials that they had it under control.
And we will now spend the next two weeks in isolation in the house, although I'm still tempted to walk around licking everybody on the cul se sac's door knobs. Euphemism?
Good luck!Btw... We bugged out to Maryland yesterday.

Not really sure. We still have plane tickets for later in April but will be cancelling. We had planned for late May next. I didn't think it was possible but now think it might be. A lot will change from now to then so we'll see. When do you guys leave, jamny?
Cuomo undercut this at his press conference. He basically wants to do anything the opposite of deBlasio.NYC doe made it official.
No going back to school this school year.
Going to be so hard on the kids and families having to deal with the kids for three months. Sucks. Was hoping for June at least.
It's good to see you guys learning and stopping these behaviors. I hope it continues once this virus crisis is over.Btw... We bugged out to Maryland yesterday.

Speaking on behalf of the NYC folks in hospitality...we would love to have you guys.So will visitors be allowed by mid July?
Been promising my wife a trip to the city for years and our 20 year anniversary is this Summer. Would love to come to NYC if its safe.

Yes, please come! You can stay at my place. Actually I live too far out but that’s the sentiment GB. It’ll still be the city that never sleeps god willing.Speaking on behalf of the NYC folks in hospitality...we would love to have you guys.
No idea if the summer will be open. But I hope to god it is.

I won’t be shocked if they try and open July 1-ish, but I just sort of doubt there’s not a second wave which really has me thinking about life in general. My guess is we aren’t long for the city, especially if I (and more importantly my wife) had any clarity on work from home. I’m just sort of numb and really wonder what the city will be like a year from now.Speaking on behalf of the NYC folks in hospitality...we would love to have you guys.

Yea me too. I mean once there is a vaccine i will feel more comfortable, but until then i agree. I don't live in the city but i need to go in for work like once or twice a week(my wife every day). I can tell you i would be very nervous about that for a while and i have no doubts about a second wave especially as tourists visit and people return.I won’t be shocked if they try and open July 1-ish, but I just sort of doubt there’s not a second wave which really has me thinking about life in general. Jersey has already mandated all operators and riders of mass transit to be in masks and gloves - no mask, no gloves: NO RIDE.Just have been thinking about the subways, LIRR and Metro-North. Buses too. How do things "open back up" with mass transit in mind?

Not sure. I was thinking about the passenger density too. Those things are packed normally. What are masks really going to do with people on top of each other?Jersey has already mandated all operators and riders of mass transit to be in masks and gloves - no mask, no gloves: NO RIDE.
punishable by law.
has this been enacted in NY yet? if it was it slid right by me.
dunno, just making the observation - but it's better to have them than not, no?Not sure. I was thinking about the passenger density too. Those things are packed normally. What are masks really going to do with people on top of each other?
Looks like gloves and masks are required for workers but just masks for riders.Jersey has already mandated all operators and riders of mass transit to be in masks and gloves - no mask, no gloves: NO RIDE.

My thoughts as well on plan. I think a gating item needs to be large scale testing and tracing. I don't like the lip service on slide 3 that says states need to do set up testing and tracing. What the hell is the federal govt for if they just point to states to act. My guess is that just can't do it so they punt to someone else. For those who haven't seen it:
Opening Up America Again
Time to start discussing how that will be handled here in NY. I mentioned in the Covid thread that NYC numbers are actually trending better than the statewide numbers at the moment. There will no doubt be considerable pressure to start Phase 1 in the city if that continues.
Overall, I like the plan although it doesn't sufficiently address testing, imo.
I'm still a bit confused on it. I can understand leaving it to the state's to set up the testing areas and administering the tests but do they each have to get the tests themselves? How do they go about acquiring tests? My thoughts as well on plan. I think a gating item needs to be large scale testing and tracing. Makes no sense. Think they are trying to punt testing onto states since federal govt. messed it up so much so they can go blame someone else.I'm still a bit confused on it. I don't give a ####.The NY attitude endures. Something I saw posted on facebook:
"They say once you have lived in NYC for a decade, you become a "real" New Yorker, but if you fled NYC to ride out the Covid-19 pandemic, your clock restarts when you return."
Me either. My daughter arrives in CA tomorrow. Home. Her first year in the City has been great. But it’s not a label she’ll die for.I don't give a ####.
Signed,
Me.
Glad to hear this is working out.Me either. My daughter arrives in CA tomorrow. Home. Her first year in the City has been great. But it’s not a label she’ll die for.
99% would have left if they had a place to go.Glad to hear this is working out.![]()
Zoomed with my family out there and asked how those first couple weeks worked for my nieces (with you in mind). sounds like they didn't really stay that isolated from my brother and sil at home, but it all fortunately worked out, with sil scrubbing away around them. The RV sounds like a great plan.
I will say...my friends who skidaddled to their houses in the Hamptons day one AND THEN started being judgemental about how people staying in the city were behaving while posting pics of themselves lounging pool side...screw them as well as the judgemental jerk in jamnys post making posts on fb of all places about the people who chose to leave.
Nothing direct other than what he told my MIL.99% would have left if they had a place to go.
Speaking of, are you still getting hostility from your neighbor down there?
They can't see your license plate when you walk...Nothing direct other than what he told my MIL.
We've been here a week and half and have a better lay of the land now. We were driving- to avoid polluting their world with our vile NYC toxins- about 30 seconds to a tennis court nearby to hit balls when we could see it was empty.
We realized even on the rare occasion somebody was out on the street, it would be easy to walk and avoid them by 20+ feet. So we started walking this weekend, only a few minutes. Saw various other neighbors (haven't seen our nemesis yet) out working on their yards/cars/boats who all were very friendly ..at least to our faces. One guy even commented how nice it was to see people out walking.
PA plates on the rental. They can't see your license plate when you walk...
