Source: Bengals Could Fire Marvin Lewis By End Of Week

September 29th, 2008 ·

Sources have informed Pro Football Central that the Cincinnati Bengals are nearing toward a decision that could result in head coach Marvin Lewis being fired by the end of the week. The source also states that owner Mike Brown is also deciding upon whether to name assistant head coach Paul Alexander or defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer as the interim head coach. The Bengals are 0-4 for the first time since 2002, when they went a franchise-worst 2-12 that got coach **** LeBeau fired.

If not Lewis, then who?

I find this hard to believe. There hasn't been a whiff of this in the local media, no fan uproar, nothing.

The problem isn't the coach, it's Brown.

but Brown's not going to fire himself.these rumors will always pop up when your team goes 0-4.sorry it had to happen to the Bengals, but i am so glad that Cleveland got the win. hopefully we can make a few more weeks before the Cowher rumors start up again.

If I were Kansas City, I'd fire Herm Edwards, and then put Lane Kiffen in there. Then Al Davis would have a bitter hatred for two inner-division teams. How fun would that be?

I don't live in the Ohio area so I'm sure you're right, I get all my Bengals news from Bengalszone message board and there is alot of discussion over there about this.

Wait a minute! Marvin Lewis is a black head coach and he can't be fired. It would mess up the NFL's diversity program. He MUST be given an entire season to show off his coaching genius. At least we were told when he was in Washington working for the Ole Ballcoach that he was a coaching genius.

Lame. Why don't you head on over to the Drudge report or somewhere else that your unhelpful, off-topic comments biased by your political viewpoint might be appreciated?

Like yours? :PAnywho.. as for the question at hand. Yeah, I could see Lewis being fired soon. If not this week, then soon if they go 0-5 or 0-6.Personally, I think Herm just saved his job by beating the Broncos. Or at least bought him some more time...

If Lewis is fired, they'll still keep the same parole officer, right? Or would the new coach want to put his own guy in there?

In the criminal justice system, each convict has his own parole officer, commonly referenced as a PO by criminals (as in "I gotta go see my f*ing PO"), so this should not affect community service time, weekly check-ins, urine tests and/or rehab meetings, so the Bengals organization and new coaching staff can breathe easy with regard to that.

Why is the coach not the problem too? What has he ever done as a coach? Yeah he coached D on that Balt team.... have you seen how any D coach in Balt tends to be successful??? Maybe it is the talent there ... just maybe  For a defensive guru, what has Lewis done other than have a horrible D every single year he is there. And his inputs regarding the D players drafted have been horrible too.... see Ahmad Brooks.

Lewis deserves to be fired.

This particular situation aside, Why would an NFL ever team fire a coach at the end of the week. It makes no sense.
We find it's always better to fire people on a Friday. Studies have statistically shown that there's less chance of an incident if you do it at the end of the week.

Right, I violated the Prime Directive: No pissing in the Shark Tank! This is Serious Football talk, not the drivel of the FFA. No discussion of vague rumors or speculation allowed in the Shark Tank. :wall: BTW, I lived through the one year that Lewis was DC of the Redskins. He presented himself as the only brains on the coaching staff with the Redskins and taking all the credit and none of the blame for the defensive lapses that helped lead to the 7-9 season. He was front and center with the media and constatnly promoted himself for HC jobs with other teams until the Bengals hired him. If he'd stayed around another year, he probably would have gotten the job with the Skins after Spurrier left. I consider Lewis to be the beneficiary of some excellent defensive players in Baltimore and a guy who's parlayed that sucess into a very profitable head coaching gig that may not last too much longer. That he is black in a time when the NFL has been bending over backwards to get more black head coaches is certainly part of why this has taken place.

Mike Brown is a terrible GM

Marvin Lewis is a terrible head coach. His gameday adjustments are horrible and he may be the worst time management coach in the NFL.

The sad thing is as long as Brown is GM/owner the Bengals will never get a whiff of a top tier coach. Personally, I think Mike Brown is trying to lose this year. Some of his moves are so bad they have to be intentional. Even stupid people get lucky once in a while.

Brown cut Lewis' male body parts off when he forced Chris henry back on the team. Firing Marvin is probably a favor at this point.

Marvin started out with a bang, but he lost control over that team a long time ago.Sometimes guys like Marvin and Mornginweg are better off just runnnig the offenses and defenses.

The Bengals looked terrible last week vs a very poor Cleveland team. I think that was Lewis' last chance to somehow salvage the season and the team didn't get it done. Things are only going to continue to be ugly this week at Dallas especially if Carson doesn't play. Marvin's expressions and body language during the Cleveland game made it really look like he was pretty much fed up with things and awaiting the inevitable. he is much better suited being a D coordinator anyway.

I would be surprised if the Bengals fired him mid-season though -- they are too cheap to have to pay him for the rest of the season for games he never coached for them (of course, they could just refuse to pay him like Al Davis but, then again the Bengals are probably too cheap to pay any attorneys to defend Lewis' lawsuit).

I agree with all of this. Mike Brown is the bane of football fans in that town. I feel very bad for Carson Palmer who would likely have a shot at the HOF if he played for any other franchise. I feel bad for Marvin Lewis who has been hamstrung by a front office that refuses to foot the bill for anything more than a less than adequate scouting department. For years they have gambled on talented but troubled players in the draft and because they fall in the draft Brown thinks he's getting a deal. Marvin has changed a lot of things for the better and to his credit the Bengals owe him a lot for gaining some semblance of respect for that organization even as brief as it was. The beginning of the end was letting Eric Steinbach walk to Cleveland. When players saw that a guy like that could not get paid in CIN it put the writing on the wall. Marvin Lewis could not ask for anything better than a pink slip IMO. He is a good but not great defensive coach who was made rich and famous by the talent surrounding him in Baltimore's heyday, namely Ray Lewis. I doubt he will ever be a HC again after this runs its course. I certainly would not want to be if I were him.
