**NFC Divisional Round - Washington at Detroit** (-9, 55) 8:15 on FOX (2 Viewers)

Nice win for Washington in Tampa
Jayden is the real deal
But Detroit had a bye last week for a reason
They're the best team in The NFC
Ford Field will be very very loud when the visitors have the ball
Great season Commanders
But it ends here...

Detroit Lions- 41
Washington Commanders- 27

This is going to be a fun and entertaining game. Jayden Daniels on turf with the rest of the season on the line might cause some issues against a team with so many injuries on defense.

implied total:
Lions 32, Commanders 23
  • Lions are 12-5 against the spread
  • Commanders are 11-6-1 against the spread
  • Lions are 9-8 to the OVER
  • Commanders are 11-7 to the OVER
Injuries:

Lions:
  • RB David Montgomery (knee) is questionable
  • CB Terrion Arnold (foot) is questionable
  • DE Aidan Hutchinson (tibia) is on the IR
  • CB Carlton Davis III (jaw) is on the IR
Commanders:
  • LB Jordan Magee (hamstring) is questionable
  • DT Daron Payne (finger) is questionable
Montgomery is expected to play per Dan Campbell. Arnold’s “treatment has been going well” but the HC didn’t offer anything concrete.

Commanders did not punt in their WC win over the Bucs; they went 3/5 on 4th down.

I really like Daniels but the kid isnt built to run as much as he does. Detroit bites his kneecaps and moves on.

Washington 13
Detroit 42

Jayden Daniels is the best player between these 2 teams. He's the best player in the NFC. Washington is VERY scary going forward. All that said, right now the Lions are clearly the better team.

I think Washington does hit some explosive plays against a banged up Lions CB room. This is the biggest game of Terry McLaurin's career, and his downfield ability is gonna be a key to this game.

I think the Washington pass defense is really bad and will be their undoing. Do they have confidence to have Lattimore cover Jameson Williams? Absolute disaster Noah Igbinoghene has manned the slot of late, so Amon-Ra should be either open all game, or be drawing multiple defenders consistently. Given the scariness of the Lions run game, I'd bet Amon-Ra is just open all day. This feels like a nice day for Jared Goff.

I do want to highlight Bobby Wagner, who at age 34 is still the best LB in the NFL. I think he'll make some plays in the run game and help to make LaPorta more of a decoy.

Ultimately, I think the Lions take an early lead and keeps Washington chasing. The final score will probably be closer than the game actually was.

Detroit-31
Washington-24

Jayden Daniels shines again, the Commanders scrap and control the clock, keeping the potent Lions offense on the sidelines, before winning on yet another flukey play with time expiring, WAS 28-DET 27.

Agree with both the bolded. The Lions should definitely win (and I'd be rooting for them if they weren't playing Washington).
It's just that there were other games this year that Washington's opponent should definitely have won, but they didn't.
Dammit this is a fun year for Washington fans. And next year they will likely be better, given how much the team was improved in just 1 year by having the right people in charge.

Since a poor opening week vs Tampa, Commanders have not lost a game by double digits. They lost twice by 8 (DAL and PHI), lost by 7 to BAL, and by 1 to PIT. They also only have two blowout wins. Their style leads to close games. I think we cover, but in the end lose to a better DET team.

Washington could open Austin Seibert's 21-day IR-R window if there was any real concern about Gonzalez. Both kicked well this year, but Seibert probably rushed back from IR too soon earlier this year. It's not clear if he's 100% but he insisted he was physically fine after the Cowboys game; a missed XP cost them a shot at OT, and they haven't lost since.

Former Lion David Blough is on Quinn's staff as the Assistant Quarterbacks Coach. It will likely be awhile before he moves up to a more prominent role - he's in Y1 - but that's a guy who always seemed like a future NFL coordinator/HC.

Former Lions OC (2021) Anthony Lynn is the RBs Coach and Run Game Coordinator.

This game features two of the three NFC Pro Bowl Quarterbacks. Goff was named the starter, Daniels and Darnold the backups.

Jayden Daniels is incredibly poised for a rookie QB. We've seen quarterbacks come in and play well as rookies, but I am not sure I have ever seen a guy who is more even keeled. After they doinked their way into the division round, Quinn and all of his teammates were going crazy. Jayden just smiled, picked up his helmet and walked onto the field. Like, "Yeah OK, we won - that's what I expected - on to the next one."

He throws a really nice deep ball. Kid has all the tools to be a great player in the NFL.

Detroit's celebrated OL finished the season ranked 4th by PFF, but Washington was also Top Ten. Their pass blocking climbed from 25th a year ago to 8th this year. Landing a starting LT in 3rd round pick Brandon Coleman was a huge win for Adam Peters.

Commanders signed a league high 26 free agents - at least 17 on 1-year prove it deals - and had one of the bigger UDFA classes with 11. Of course they didn't all work out but they got major contributions from Austin Ekeler (2nd Team All Pro KR and RB2), TE Zach Ertz, LG Nick Allegretti, C Tyler Biadasz, their top 2 Edge Rushers in Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler, two 2nd Team All Pro LBs in Mike LB Bobby Wagner and Will LB Frankie Luvu, S Jeremy Chin, LS Tyler Ott, and several other contributors.

Nice rookie class - besides Daniels, they landed the top DI in the Class in Johnny Newton, with pick 50 they took Mike Sanristi, who became their best outside CB (and everyone said he could only play the slot lol.) They made a big trade to land Marshon Lattimore but I'm not sure he's the same guy he used to be.

In summary, really impressive turnaround by Peters and Quinn. Best one season improvement in franchise history. They'll have a lot to backfill in the offseason but based on Y1 I'd say there is every reason to believe they have the right GM to handle that.

Detroit has pretty massive advantage in their OL versus the Commanders run fits. Montgomery is back and good to go. Commanders have had issues with poor tackling at times, and the back end coverage hasn't been great. There are mismatches all over, and Ford Field has turned into one the loudest venues in the NFL.

Daniels will have to elevate to another level to keep this one close. I don't think I'd bet against him, but these two teams are not on the same level. That said, the moment you take something for granted in the NFL you'll get smacked in the mouth. Commanders aren't going to lay down and be passive bystanders to the Detroit coronation. Quinn will have them ready.

Second best game of the weekend - BAL at BUF could be epic - and one that should be highly entertaining with lots of offense.

The Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders' Divisional Round matchup will be officiated by Ron Torbert.

An NFL official since 2010 and a lead referee since 2014, Torbert has local ties as a graduate of Michigan State University; after undergrad he completed his law degree at Harvard. In his time as a lead official, he has officiated just three Lions games. Most recently, he presided over the Lions' 34-23 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Dec. 11, 2022.

The Lions are 1-2 in games with Torbert as the lead official, with the other two games being a loss to Carolina in 2020 and a loss to Atlanta in 2021.

Torbert's crew has been one of the most flag-happy in the league, as it ranks fourth in the league in total flags with 284. His crew has thrown 50 flags for offensive holding, 41 for false starts and 21 for defensive pass interference, according to NFLPenalties.com.

His count for defensive pass interference is tied for fifth in the league. The 50 offensive holding penalties rank tied for third.

Among the games he's reffed with the most penalties called include Seattle vs. Buffalo in Week 8 (24), Cleveland vs. Miami in Week 17 (20) and Washington vs. Tennessee in Week 13 (19). The Commanders defeated the Titans in the only game they've played with Torbert's crew as the lead officiating crew.

He was the crew chief for Super Bowl LVI (Rams-Bengals.)

I expect the rookie QB to look more like a rookie QB in this one.

Lions roll. Win by at least two TD's. Gibbs and St Brown with monster days. Jamison might even get a long one.

The Daniels kool-aid is strong. The BEST player in the NFC? Come on, he's played 1 season and beat a bunch of crappy teams. Not saying he's not good, but slow down a little.
Exactly....let's not crown the kid just yet. He wins at Detroit, we can maybe start the "best player in the NFC" discussion.

The Lions are hungry and hold some awesome offensive pieces. They can sprint to a lead and/or play catchup based on game flow and situation. They are playing a dangerous team with a red hot rookie QB in what should be a classic battle. I can’t see the Lions losing at home with that OL and the dynamic play of Gibbs and the efficiency Goff has produced. Wash giving up 137 yards per game on the ground is going to be their Achilles in the second half. If a shootout ensues, the Lions have more weapons. Wash is a good team. They will exploit the Lions secondary. Eckler becomes a dangerous wild card. In the end it will be Gibbs maybe Gibbs and Monty. Run will setup the pass for potential dagger.

If the Lions lose it will be a legendary JD game and turnovers maybe a tough consequence to a Campbell risk.

However, give me Lions, so:

Lions 33
Wash 27

The Commanders have one of the worst run defenses in the league and allow an insane 4.8 ypc. They have to do a whole lot better than that or the Lions will have the ball 35 minutes. If that happens the game won't be close.

Detroit is going to score each time they have the ball. Can Washington do the same?
Glenn made Darnold come crashing back to earth. He will have the talented rookie seeing things he hasn't seen before.
Washington is 30th against the run and we have Gibbs and Monty. They have nobody to cover ARSB / Jamo.

The Rams / Eagles game will be far more competitive.

this is a lot closer than expected and the Lions show that injuries do matter. They still win because their offense is better.
35-29

I think the injured D is being overstated at this point. They're essentially down Hutch (but have been without him for a long time), McNeil, and CD. Anzalone was the real killer when he was out. Getting Iffy back was also critical.

We're also down Marcus Davenport and Derrick Barnes, who were both starters and a bunch of key reserves.

Not practicing for the Lions today
  • OT Taylor Decker*
  • OG Kevin Zeitler (working off to the side with trainers)
  • DL Pat O’Connor
  • CB Ennis Rakestraw
*haven't seen official confirmation but Substack chat says his wife is in labor

They've been without them the whole year and added Zadarius Smith to fill in at DE. The depth is definitely not great, but I still think they've got plenty of quality guys available currently.

Marcus Davenport gets injured walking to the Refrigerator

This feels oh so very similar to Stroud last year. Flying high into the Ravens. Everyone calling for the upset. Ravens 34 Texans 10. Feels very similar.

I think the Commanders are plucky but will get annihilated. Gibbs and DMont score at least 2 TDs each, win by at least 3 TDs even with some Commie garbage time points.

No way Washington gets blown out like several of you are predicting. That hasn’t happened all year and Daniels is only getting better. Yes Lions should be favored at home but this blowout talk is absurd.

The Commanders have beaten:

Giants
Bengals (before they were good)
Cardinals
Browns
Panthers
Bears
Giants
Titans
Saints
Eagles (getting ripped until Hurts was hurt)
Falcons
Cowboys

I get you can only play who’s in front of you. But dang. That’s a super super super soft group of teams right there.
