NFL.com Depth Charts.... screwy! (1 Viewer)

What a mess! The Jets show a 4-3, but Bryan Thomas is listed as a WILL! Dallas shows a 3-4, but Ellis is listed as a DE! I've talked about this before, but it's really looking like a serious issue to me now. Take a look.... it's awful. Having to assign contracts for IDP players is now an official nightmare. Thoughts?

MFL does not use the NFL.com depth charts for their official position assignments. They use the official rosters listed on each teams official website. From their FAQ:

Official rosters are found on the individual NFL team's official web sites. They are not found on NFL.com or any other web site. A simple listing of these official sites can however be found on the NFL.com Teams page. To get to an official roster, locate the NFL team and click on the "Official Site" link. Do NOT click on any other link on this page. You will be transferred to the team's official web site. From here you'll have to navigate to the "Rosters" page. Do not use any other page (including the Depth Chart) for this information.
On the Jets website Thomas is listed as a DE. If you see a discrepency, all you have to do is email their support dept as per these instructions found on their player change announcment forum:
While we make every effort to have the correct position for all players, it's not uncommon for players to change positions from season to season or during the preseason. We compare our data with all official rosters in early September once the NFL teams cut down to their 53-man playing rosters. Any changes made to player positions at this time will be recorded here. Once the season starts, any changes that occur and that we are made aware of will be queued up and added each Tuesday overnight (technically early Wednesday morning).Use the "Track this topic" link above (requires a separate, support message board login) in order to be automatically kept up-to-date with any position changes.NOTE: Commissioners can always use the For Commissioners > Setup > Players and Rosters > Change Player Position to override the default MFL position for any player. Please submit all change requests via email to "support@myfantasyleague.com". Include the player's full name, current position, officially listed position, and a link to the team's official roster report.

Thanks... but my particular problem remains... in my 2 league' (dynasty) bylaws says that the official depth chart listed at NFL.com is the default. If you look at Suggs, at the Raven's site, he's listed as a "rush LB/DE". MFL list s him as a DE. Because team sites sometimes do this, my leagues decided that the NFL.com site would be the ruling authority, since hybrids have to be listed in one position or another, not two, the way Suggs is at the Ravens' site. I think it's more than just a league issue because of this. If anyone knows of a fair, equitable solution, please let me know... it's driving me nuts right now.

What is this MFL site everyone speaks of?!?! One of my leagues uses it as it's driving force as well, but I have no idea how to get to the site. MFL.com doesn't work! What is the site?!?!?

My solution has always been to manually change clearly wrong players the week before the season begins. It's very rare that I've had to do this in a DL-LB-DB system. IMO, owners who draft these players are either angle shooting at loopholes or ill-prepared. If they can show me a reasonable argument why a player should be listed differently, I'll leave a player alone.

NFL.com, MFL, and others don't keep frequent enough tabs on depth charts to be reliable. Too many collegiate players are left alone, the DT/DE designations on MFL are so hit-and-miss it's pathetic.

The two players I'd list either way at owner's request right now are Terrell Suggs and Jason Taylor. I have no problem keeping them at DE given their positional responsibilities but I'd consider moving them to a LB designation if so requested.

ETA: MFL = myfantasyleague.com

I try and get 2 credable sources before I change a player, or if an owner feels one of his players position is wrong I require them to e-mail me 2 credable sources. If we have a player in question once season starts I use NFL gamebook to decide.

AH! Yes! That's it! the NFL gamebook! The Jets' site still lists B Thomas as a DE, he's an OLB at nfl.com. Sometimes, I think some intern is making these depth charts up. The game book.... that's the one, at least for the starters. Thanks!

Unfortunately, Thomas was listed as a DE in both gamebooks thus far.

So here's what you do. With permission, take FBG's as your default depth chart. I lock it on opening day and if a problem arises, you make sure it's in the bylaws that the official positions are <whatever you use>.

Actually, Thomas as a DE is good for Thomas owners.... but really not fair (yes, I picked up Thomas cheap). He's an OLB. Listed as a DE, he could be top five, if he plays the way he has so far. It cuts both ways, as I also have Greg Ellis, but he is correctly listed as an OLB in the gamebook, but is a DE at the Dallas site, and at NFL.com. When you can get a rush LB listed as a DE, it's golden... but is it fair? I don't think it is, and that is what I'm searching for... a fair (and indisputable) way to determine the correct position assignments that reflect what happens on the field. Unfortunately, the gamebook doesn't accurately reflect all the IDP's correctly either. It's tough to put it at the commish's feet, especially in 16 team leagues when there is never a consensus on anything, ever.

If Thomas is listed as DE, it suggest their base defense is a 4-3 ... right?

It would, but that's inaccurate as Rovers eyes-on reports (and Mangini) would confirm. Everything we've heard and seen suggests the split in the multiple front scheme has been highly skewed toward a three man front (like its cousins in NE and CLE).Rovers?

I went to 7 training camp practices.... never, even ONCE saw a 4-3 alignment. Same situation in the first 2 preseason games.... in fact, it's a 5-2. The OLB's always start on the LOS. What they do after that.... can be almost anything. They can both be in a stance, penetrate, pass rush, go into coverage... anything.

I see ... Maybe gamebook will get it right once the season starts, if thats not too late for ya.

In redraft leagues before our draft starts any disputed players are voted into their position for the year. Typically there are only a handful, but then everyone knows where they stand and being a redraft, people can adjust their rankings and pick accordingly.

It does get more difficult in dynasty leagues though.

From what I've seen of the Jets games, B.Thomas has played both spots depending on situation. Kinda the old Willie McGinest days, when he was listed as a DL and played some LB before being officially labeled a LB.

I agree too that Thomas as a DL is a better deal than as a LB, similar to how Thomas Davis would have been a better pick as a DB than SLB...

If it's a 5-2, doesn't that mean they have 5 DL?

I know you're saying it's a 3-4 with 2 extra guys up front, but if they are up front and it's a 5-2, it's a 5-2.

If some team decided to play a 4-4 it wouldn't make the 4th LB a DB.

NFL.com is run by CBS Sportsline. That is why they are so screwy. People take them as gospel because of the NFL.com name, but they are about the worst ones out there.

Individual team websites is much better. In most of my leagues we use either the FBG ones or Ourlads.com
