NFL Combine for VETERANS (2 Viewers)

They basically made a documentary of how 5-6 years can cripple a man (who is still in his 20's!) and reduce him to a shell of his former self. That oughta encourage kids to go into football
Running a slow forty (by NFL standards) = crippling someone?

Beat me to it. A man of Michael Bush's size running that 40 time is still in great shape compared to the average guy.

I don't get what people seem so upset about. As an "event", it is not the combine or the draft, and I doubt anyone expected it to be. But it seems like a good idea to save everyone involved some time and travel, and to provide an opportunity for the fringe guy who truly DOES still have it to showcase himself. If that is 2 guys out of 100 participants, so be it. As far as the show goes, it's for diehards who can't get enough football. Kind of like the combine (and to some degree the draft) USED to be.

If Bush and others like him show up for the event unprepared, that's on them. I do feel a LITTLE bad for him being in the spotlight like that while getting destroyed. But the sensible thing to do is to do prep for the events you will run, and if your results aren't up to snuff, don't show up. It's not like he didn't know what he was walking into. These guys have all run 40's etc before.

And the $400? Really guys, you think this is the NFL's new money making scheme, to steal $400 from former players? Every player on the field was earning 100k+ a year at one point, most much more. $400 is NOTHING for career advancement in almost any field. 20 years ago, I paid that for books in a semester of school. But sure, the NFL's primary goal was to net that 40k minus expenses... My guess is that the fee was more about winnowing down the field a bit to guys who were more or less serious about it.

That's not true at all. Many of these guys have never appeared on an NFL roster, and several of them were only on a practice squad (at $6K per week). And at least one guy (Chris Baker) had never even been invited to a training camp before.

I'm sure if it was free they wouldn't get a million joke applications

if you can't come up with 4/10ths of a rack you really need to be thinking about getting a real job at this point

Is that right? In the last ten fifteen years I can think of two Chris Baker's in the NFL. Just curious re- common name and all

This Chris Baker blew out his Achilles at a pre-draft combine. He wasn't drafted and he was never invited to any NFL camps.

Fair enough. Many of them HAD made good money though, and they were certainly were making more money than when this old fogey was investing in books. The point is, $400 is not much at all for any kind of investment in a career, and that's especially true for a payoff like an NFL contract. A decent suit is $400.

Heh and I didn't know that Chris Baker.

Thanks for sharing, that is a fantastic article.

In Joe's link above it mentions Vince wasn't invited. That's oddly interesting too.

If teams feel like ugh we've seen this guy over and over, then they shouldn't be. I don't mean ill will toward Vince but I feel like I might like reading more about the selection process and chances for those that haven't received them.

The NFL has finally done it. They have jumped the shark on this one.

They put together an event that is akin to showing the "highlights" of once good/great players, like Joe Namath's final season as he saddened his followers, looking like everyone got the memo except him.

They go up against the NCAA tournament which, while I'm sure means little to most people, to me it was just an illustration of the big bully trying to muscle into yet another sports 15 minutes of fame. The NFL just can't stand for anyone else to get a minute's attention.

This product has no place being out there.

If nobody has wanted you for 2 years, please don't prey on their vulnerabilities for your ratings...and charge them to do it.

This is like that old saying a famous HOF coach said "If you can do a thing and it has 8 outcomes...and 7 of those outcomes are bad...don't do it."
Sounds like you are talking about USA soccer.
