Steelers make final cuts

Veterans with Super Bowl rings, draft picks and preseason fairytales were among those Steelers coach Mike Tomlin released yesterday as he pared his roster in time for today's limit of 53.

Tomlin declined to publicly reveal his cuts, but the Post-Gazette has identified some of the more important ones. Tomlin said he will not officially place anyone on waivers until he has to today, so as not to allow other teams to get a full day's jump on evaluating his cuts, and also because trades could still be involved.

Running backs Carey Davis, Justin Vincent and rookie Isaac Redman, linebacker Bruce Davis and veteran cornerback Anthony Madison were among the players who were informed of their release yesterday.

Also among the 22 players who were waived is former Penn State center A.Q. Shipley, a Moon High School graduate and one of the team's seventh-round draft choices. Shipely said he was told the Steelers will try to sign him to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

One local player who did make it is safety Ryan Mundy, who played at Woodland Hills High School and West Virgnia University. Tomlin confirmed that Mundy and kick returner Stefan Logan sealed their positions on the 53-man roster with their performances in Thursday night's final preseason game in Carolina.

Shipley is the one of two draft choices who didn't make the 53-man roster. The other is defensive end Sonny Harris, a seventh-round pick who was also cut.

Redman, from Bowie State in Maryland, led the team with three touchdowns and 145 yards rushing in the preseason and was the star of two live goalline drills in training camp.

Carey Davis, who started 11 of the 34 games in which he appeared the past two seasons, will be waived injured by the team. He did not play in last night's 21-10 preseason victory in Carolina.

Bruce Davis was a third-round draft choice in 2008 from UCLA, where he had 25 1/2 sacks in his last two years as a defensive end.

Among other cuts were former Penn State defensive tackle Scott Paxson and inside linebacker Donovan Woods, both of whom spent time on the 53-man roster last season.

C Kory Lichtensteiger (surprised)
These two are surprises. Lichtensteiger was 4th round pick last year and had been a backup at guard too.Fowler was a 2 year starter at Buffalo and was only just signed by the Cardinals at the beginning of August. He had actual game experience at both center and guard. I'm surprised he didn't make it as a backup, although I expect he signs on somewhere.

A little surprised to see Chris Henry and Chris Davis not on the list, but there are still a couple to go...

Does anyone know what time today these must be in to the league office by?
I believe they are supposed to be in by 4pm EST. However, I heard something on espn that said they have until 6pm EST...so now I am not as positive on the 4pm time.(Btw, DD, I sent you a PM. If you get a chance, please check it out. It was just a real quick question. Thanks.)

Saw 5:00 on Packer Gazette site but that may be Central Time. They also said that Thompson will wait like Bellicek several hours after that to make releases public to increase their chance of getting players through waivers for the scout team.

News: In a mild surprise, Dominic Rhodes has been released by the Bills, according to multiple sources. Rhodes was expected to provide depth at the position through at least the first three weeks of the season while Marshawn Lynch served a suspension. Fred Jackson will not only start for Buffalo in those games, which was expected, but he'll likely be used on every down now that Rhodes has been released.

Analysis: Great news for those owners who drafted Jackson since he might legitimately be a 20-touch runner for the first three games. The Bills' O-line is a mess and the team fired their offensive coordinator after the first-team offense couldn't score a TD in five preseason games, but Jackson will at least be in a place to be relevant in Fantasy circles for the start of the season. He's a must-get for those folks who have Marshawn Lynch, and he's also worthy of being a low-end No. 3 RB in deeper leagues this season. For Weeks 1 through 3, however, Jackson should be considered for a starting spot as a flex since his reps will be plentiful.

All of the players cut are placed on waivers and are know to all the of NFL teams by the 4PM deadline. There is no such thing as 'sneaking' a player through waivers. If you claim a player you have to place them on your 53 man roster. Only after clearing waivers can players who are eligible be added to a teams practice squad.

Ravens cut Graham Gano. Steve Hauschka wins kicking job. I'm sure everyone was waiting with baited breath for the results on that one.

Redskins waive Chase Daniel. Will try to get him on the PS.

Saints released QB Joey Harrington. It's just another kick to the groin for Harrington, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2002 draft. Mark Brunell, 39, will back up Drew Brees. Harrington's career is in serious jeopardy. Source: NFL.com
