NFL football is a violent game. (1 Viewer)

I went to the Lion-49s game yesterday and sat down low near the field.

The intensity of the hits really blew me away. I am talking every play. How a NFL RB can play 16 games without a major leg injury escapes me. The way the players hit and then fall into each other legs around a pile looks so much different in person close to the action than on TV.

Some of the shots Gore and KJ took were vicious. I would not want to return kicks in this league either.

The Kitna sack was right in front of me. Anyone who did not see that hit has to watch the highlights. I don`t think I have ever seen a QB take a shot like that and get up. It was helmet to Kitnas jaw. Kitna never saw him coming and his feet almost went over his head, you could hear the crack. The 49 has to be fined or suspended for that one.

I left the game knowing that NFL players earn every dollar they make.

It amazes me too that most NFL players make it through the season. Especially the little guys who take a beating like RBs.However, I definitely do not agree that they earn every dollar. They make millions. They have fun playing. Its a dream job.

I can see you point especially relative to baseball players who get hurt in an environment that doesn't begin to compare. That said, many of us around here have played tackle football without pads in high school and college without injury. Seems like the helment and pads become more of a weapon than protection.

In the NFL there are many guys playing for peanuts compared the the NBA and MLB. I am suprised there are not more broken necks in NFL games. These guys are huge and leading with their heads.

I agree that football is a violent sport and it is amzaing that more guys don't get hurt -BUT- some of these "roughing the passer" calls are getting ridiculous.

A lot of them don't make it. Still more of them last but come away with chronic injuries. Probably very few, maybe none, play ten years and are healthy.

You'd be surprised how little padding some of those guys wear. Most don't wear cups, the speed guys use the smallest thigh pads they can, no girdles or knee pads either, because they don't want to be slowed down.

I also concur with the original post. I was at a U of Maryland scrimmage in the preseason, so I was able to get field level and it's just crazy how hard they went. It's scary to think that the biggest and fastest guys from college are doing that in the NFL.

Did they challenge that play? From that clip, it looks like it's possible the ball didn't come out until he hit the ground.
(14:53) J.Kitna sacked at DET 22 for -7 yards (S.Spencer). FUMBLES (S.Spencer), RECOVERED by SF-M.Douglas at DET 26. M.Douglas to DET 26 for no gain (D.Raiola). Play Challenged by DET and Upheld. (Timeout #1 by DET at 14:47.)I suppose it was knocked loose on the initial hit and not Kitna hitting the ground.

Our Rugby team (no pads) had many fewer injuries than our Football team. That level of padding seems to give a sense of invincibly.

Did you see the hit Kitna took yesterday?
That hit was 100% legal.
If you saw the replay, the 49er defender led with his helmet right into the side of Kitnas jaw.I TIVOed the game and watched that hit a number of times after I got home. I would be very suprised if he is not fined.Great hit though!

I remember seeing a Shaun Alexander interview last season and he was asked about his limited amount of injuries he's sustained. (Go figure this yr he's hurt).

He simply said there are guys out there that won't just run out of bounds but rather get cracked for that no gain, half yd., or extra yd. He mentioned that he ducks out of the way of the majority of the hits saving his body. He told his son it always looks worse in slow motion but him ducking has kept him injury free. ala Barry Sanders and Emmitt. Some of the guys like Eddie George can't play much into their 30's due to that Power mentality. Jerome Bettis said that prior to last season he serious contemplated retirement due to the fact he could barely walk up and down his stairs at home. Let's see where that progresses to in 10 yrs.

Its extremely vicious w/ guys like Romo stating he literally played to take people out (of the game).

How 'bout the hit on Housyourdaddy yesterday? I thought the announcers were going to stroke out over what was a perfectly timed hit. They wanted the guys head on a stick. Yes, the helmet was in there but they were in the hits previously mentioned as well.Way too subjective...

Perfectly timed hit??!!! hahaha..... better watch that again bud. Take notice at the fine McCree will receive as well bc I don't think they fine people for LEGAL perfectly timed hits.

McCree's hit was a little early and should have been called but it was not illegal. he led with the shoulder. That's the price for going up across the middle.

OK...Maybe "perfection" is in the eye of the beholder, but in the bang-bang game of football sometimes people arrive a split second too soon. I don't see why McCree should be fined at all, either.Any word on Hoshmandiddy's condition? He was rocked... :loco:

Don't get me wrong, I love to see hard hits as much as the next guy. But what is really starting to get to me these days, are the "shoulder hit" tackles that these guys make. It's not even so much of playing the game and trying to bring a guy down, but rather try and knock the guy into next week and make a highlight reel. The only consolation I find in having to watch these young punks play is when the whiff on it, or the guy breaks through it and gets a huge gain. All that headhunting crap has to end though, it's not good for the game, and it allows the players to bring a "thug" mentality into playing the position......it's a sport first and foremost.

And tell Joseph Addai throwing up his WestCoast hand signals....is as ghetto as Jerry Rice with the cornrows....2 things I wish I never had to see.

There is a legitimate reason for this. A shoulder hit is much more likely to jar the ball lose than wrapping up and taking him down. It also has an intimidation factor that in some cases causes alligator arms the next time that WR goes across the middle. Both of these are legitimate goals. And yes, he wants to make the highlight reel, but there is more to it than that.

My girlfriend (an emergency room nurse) said the exact same thing at the Pats game yesterday...
