NFL Free Agency Chat- ESPN (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
With free agency starting this weekend, ESPN is holding a chat all afternoon with several of their NFL corespondents and others.

I will try and post the interesting/relevant questions and answers.

Shawn: (Baltimore, MD):: Will Ray Lewis go to the Boys? Will The Ravens get a big time receiver like Chad or Boldin?

Matt Mosley: (11:58 AM ET ) Let's get started a little early today. There's absolutely no way Ray Lewis ends up in Dallas. The Cowboys don't have enough cap room to sign Lewis and then give DeMarcus Ware the richest contract for a defender in the history of the league. But just to make sure, AFC North blogger James Walker and I will debate this topic tomorrow. And trading for Boldin or Chad Johnson doesn't sound like the Ravens to me.

Canandaigua, NY: Do you think the Giants will sign any top tier free agents?

Matt Mosley: (12:01 PM ET ) Look at what the Giants have done in the past for clues on this one. They bring in guys like Sam Madison, R.W. McQuarters and Sammy Knight to sort of hold the fort. They'll explore everything, but this isn't a team that will break the bank to bring in Housh or anything like that.

Ben (Connecticut): The Eagles are in need of Offensive Line help. What free agent O-Linemen are worth targeting?

Matt Mosley: (12:05 PM ET ) Jordan Gross would've been the best option, but he's off the market. Andy Reid likes to reserve the option of moving his guards out to tackle. I don't think that's a great way to do business, but he truly believes that Shawn Andrews could move over to right tackle and be just fine. I think they'll get something done with Tra Thomas. And yes, I think one of those first-round picks will go toward an offensive lineman. Michael Oher do anything for ya?

Sam (Redmond, WA): Has Roy Williams played his last game in Dallas? If so, isthere anyone in the market that can replace him and that they can afford?

Matt Mosley: (12:13 PM ET ) I think we've seen the end of the Williams era at safety. You can't pay a ton of money to a two-down player. I think that's a contract they'd love a do-over on. The days of the crash-helmet safety have come and gone. Now teams are looking for guys who can cover. Williams doesn't fit that mold. They'll have to get by with Keith Davis, Ken Hamlin, Pat Watkins and whoever they draft.

Scott Leppanen, centerville, ma: Where will marvin Harrison end up since his parting ways with Indy? What teams will be vying for his services in relation to his age and value at this point in his career?

Matt Mosley: (12:22 PM ET ) I don't think teams will be falling all over themselves to sign a declining player -- except maybe the Cowboys. The Redskins have tried to get away from acquiring age, although that's exactly what they did with Jason Taylor last season. I think Philly might have the hometown advantage in this situation.

Jon Cavalieri N.Attleboro Massachusetts: I was wondering what you might think the addition of Gabril wilson S and either B. Scott or Suggs LB's of Baltimore would do for the New England Patriots if they land them?

Matt Mosley: (12:27 PM ET ) Gibril Wilson is exactly the type of player Belichick will love. He's a pretty versatile guy -- and the Pats will be getting him when his value's obviously gone down. Bart Scott is a bad, bad man. He's a big-time talker. It would be interesting to see how he might fit into that locker room. He could reunite with Thomas.

mike (philadelphia, pa): paul, will the titans go after a big name wide receiver through a trade or free agency, or will they look to the draft to fill this need? in either case, who could some possibilities be?

Paul Kuharsky: (12:35 PM ET ) When you have history as a guide, I use it. Don't see them chasing Housh. Don't see them parting with price of Boldin. Imagine they will draft one and then be patient, but probably not a first rounder...

Clay (HTown): Will the Texans make any moves in free agency? Any shot at Haynesworth or will they not bother?

Paul Kuharsky: (12:37 PM ET ) Then say no on Albert, so unless they are posturing...

They have too many holes on D to fill all in one draft. Have to bring in a few mid-level free agents and need to do better than Rosevelt Colvin...

Clarksville,Tn: What do you think is more likely to happen....The Titans resign Haynesworth or sign a WR in free agancy?

Paul Kuharsky: (12:40 PM ET ) They'll probably sign a receiver in free agency, it's just not going to be the one you hope it is...

Cameron (Jacksonville Florida): What moves in free agents can you see the Jaguars making?

Paul Kuharsky: (12:45 PM ET ) Nothing major, nothing expensive. I think they'll be like the Titans, targeting cheaper guys they think will have upside in their system and locker room...

Tony (El Campo, Tx): Who can the Texans get in free agency to make it over the 8-8 hump?

Paul Kuharsky: (12:48 PM ET ) A couple pieces who play beter for them than they did where they came from. But the draft is more important. Safety and defensive end must be upgraded...

Erik (Clarksville,Tn): What direction do you think the Titans would go if they lost Collins in free agency?

Paul Kuharsky: (12:49 PM ET ) Hard to say. If Simms is on the market, he'd be a factor. If they are both gone, plan C is unknown. They think they'll be able to match a Collins offer and keep him...

Cameron (Jacksonville Florida): Any names in mind for the Jaguars? Haynesworth? Could Albert make the Jags the front runner for the Super Bowl next year?

Paul Kuharsky: (12:50 PM ET ) The Jags have said after Porter and Florence disasters that they will not be big players in big money free agency...

Rochester, NY: With this trade of Sage going to the Vikes, do they still try and aquire a QB in free agency or try to find other talents like a #1 WR or a RT?

Paul Kuharsky: (12:57 PM ET ) No, they'd be done at QB I would think...

Joe Cleveland, OH: Who are the Browns targeting in free-agency?

Tag Ribary: (1:02 PM ET ) My guess is defensive help for Cleveland with possible RB considerations.

mike grand rapids ,mi [via mobile]: Any chance the lions make a big sign this year or is the team just to bad to draw a top free agent?

Tag Ribary: (1:07 PM ET ) The Lions will have enough cap room to make a splash but they need to be cautious in my opinion. Look for value.

Clarksville,Tn: What do you think is more likely to happen....The Titans resign Haynesworth or sign a WR in free agancy?

Paul Kuharsky: (12:40 PM ET ) They'll probably sign a receiver in free agency, it's just not going to be the one you hope it is...
Ok, so probably not Housh. Not surprising, it isn't their style. Engram fits their MO, but they already have him in Gage.

Gaffney would be a welcome addition if he's cheap.

Shaun McDonald would be interesting.

FWIW, I'd LOVE to see Owen Daniels sign in Nashville. I didn't even realize he was a UFA until now.

He's an RFA.

Plaxico Burress? The Giants aren't the Redskins or Cowboys (thank God!) but they will spend the loot on a player they think will fit the team although they will generally not get caught up in a bidding war for him. Having said that, I'm not sure there is a big time player out there that the Giants will go get this year.

Yeah. I have seen a guy like Gabe Watson listed as both RFA and UFA depending on the site but I'm sure he's an RFA too. Scout.com has Daniels listed as an RFA.Here's a blurb from KFFL:

Texans | Daniels may be RFA during offseason

Tue, 06 Jan 2009 13:51:18 -0800

Nick Scurfield, of HoustonTexans.com, reports Houston Texans TE Owen Daniels will be a restricted free agent this offseason if he is not re-signed by Friday, Feb. 27.

Zach, Green Bay, WI: The Packers have some cap room, do you think Ted Thompson will break out of his shell and actually use some of it on a free agent or two? If so, who do you see as a possibility?

Tag Ribary: I don't see Ted changing his ways drastically in regards to free agency. He will evaluate the 3-4 defenders market closely and possibly make a move if the price is right.

Greg (Hernando,Ms): Do you see Canty with the Dolphins & if so, do the BOYS go after Olsansky of the Chargers

Tag Ribary: I've thought Canty was headed to Miami for a while now. I don't have any confirmation of that from anyone but it seems to make a lot of sense for both parties.

Jon Cavalieri (N.Attleboro Massachusetts): Hey Tag, your thoughts about Rey Lewis becoming a Cowboy and do you believe this is the attitude adjustment they need? If they do land him to help with the locker room woes, they should have kept Tank because his tremendous upside. They still need DT depth.

Tag Ribary: Hey Jon. I think the Ray Lewis talk to Dallas is mostly just talk. I have a hard time seeing him walk away from Baltimore after the organization has reiterated up and down that they want to keep him.

Kendall (Bronx, NY): Where does Derrick Ward end up?

Tag Ribary: Cleveland could be a good landing spot for him.

Omar(New York,NY): Do you think the giants hsve a legit shot at Bart Scott?

Matt Williamson: Yeah, I do. NYG could be in fantastic shape on D with that addition. No question about it.

ryan kitchen(canada): Will Pioli make any big splashes in free agency, maybe trade for cassel?

Matt Williamson: That could happen, but I wouldn't get rid of that early pick for Cassel. Maybe the 2nd rounder and a 3rd next year? Still, this is another team with a ton of needs, so they need all the picks they can get and personnally, I would probably stick wtih Thigpen for one year on a trial basis while I tried to build something around him.

Renaldo D.C.: Matt I know you got the guts to talk about the Big Dawg Michael Vick! Who will sign him and for what position?

Matt Williamson: Oh-teams will be interested. Have heard SF and SEA, but I bet there are more. I think he can be effective as a Wild Cat/Gimmick/Returner immediatly as he gets his feet wet back in the NFL.

Corey(Kansas City, MO): Do you think Denver will land any big name defensive players? and if they do who do you think are possibilities?

Matt Williamson: They HAVE to. Have very little on D right now to build around. Very little. Would guess that they get involved with a true 3-4 DE like Olshansky or Canty for openers.

Shelly (Tucson, AZ): Hey Matt! Are any teams seriously interested in Derek Anderson? What do you think he value is?

Matt Williamson: Shocks me a bit as well and yes, I understand how needy that some teams are for a QB, but I don't see it with DA. Maybe a third rounder.

Beau, Idaho: Do you see Miami get any big name free agents?

Matt Williamson: I would bet that they land one. Maybe Housh or Canty. I also bet that Bell stays.

Matt (St. Paul): What team do you think would be the best fit for Jeff Garcia, and where do you think he will land?

Matt Williamson: Thought Minny off the bat, but now-probably not. Still, they could add one more arm to compete for sure. Who else? KC? Guessing that Garcia isn't going to be real excited about his offers.

Jim (Charlotte): What do you think the panters will do this off season? any big names and what will they do with Julius

Bill Williamson: I think Gross and Peppers were their big names pick ups.

Eric (San Diego, CA): What do you see the Chargers doing in free agency and their top two picks in the draft? They have needs on the DL, ILB, S, OT/OG and RB obviously. Curious on your take if you were A.J. Smith.

Bill Williamson: The Chargers always play free agency close to the vest. They want to get Tomlinson done and re-sign Rivers and Gates. But I can see a linebacker or offensive lineman coming into the San Diego fold in free agency.

Jack (chicago): I've heard rumors about Simms coming to chicago. Any truth to that? What about Leftwich?

Kevin Seifert: Those are the two names most often discussed. But Lovie Smith said over the weekend that he was giving strong consideration to having Hanie and Basanez battle for the No. 2 spot. That might be posturing, but in the end that could be what ends up happening.

Joe (Buffalo, NY): Hey tim, i always appreciate your AFC east insight so shed some knowledge on me. who do the bills need to get via trade, draft, or FA in order to make a serious push for a playoff birth

Tim Graham: They need a 4-3 pass rusher, a center, a No. 2 receiver with some size and general depth. They need to upgrade their second stringers at many positions.
