NFL network game coverage - it sucks (1 Viewer)

From Papa to Millen to sound constantly cutting in and out, its just a bad broadcast.

Millen is terrible - and I want to like him ... who's darryl clark?

Papa - loves his 3rd down stats. Stop already.

 
Yeah, they definitely need better announcers. I'm beginning to think that finding good sports announcers is much harder than it looks. It's the only rationale for keeping people this terrible that I can thnk of.

 
Millen is what he is, a bafoon. I can ignore him but I can't ignore Papa who does play by play. How about a little emotion or enthusiasm in your calls?!!! GGeeeesh. On that kickoff return for a TD, his call was about as exciting as a 3 yards and a cloud of dust RB run. Terrible. Just terrible.

How does the NFL network not acknowledge this?

 
Papa is simply horrible. You would the the flagship station of the NFL would have the top talent or look for the next great announcing team.

I actually want Collinsworth and Gumbel back......that is how bad it is. (Collinsworth is a good talent...gumbel sucked).

I'd say it has something to do with Time Warner not carrying them and there not really being enough viewers to ##### and moan about it. That or they really couldn't care less.

How does Matt Millen suck? In what way does he suck as an announcer?

The guy played the game, he's articulate, he's funny, he notices all sorts of things about line play (my favorite color guys are Madden, Bill Maas and ... probably Millen. They all give props to the big guys and they all have a sense of humor.)

Millen sucked as a GM, pretty much sucks as a studio analyst, A+ color commentator though. Just one man's opinion.

There is a dude named Kevin Kiley i think who covered SEC /college back in the 1980s and early 1990's. Bring him in, he whips Millen. Sober and just enough depth on the players to keep you involved. btw: I watched that game last night in a restaurant without sound and enjoyed it immensely.
 
The things the get me the most are the awful camera angles(especially on the kick return TD) and the fact that Papa seems to think 6 is spelled with an e-x.

Millen is mediocre. He's nowhere near as awful as Papa, but that doesn't make him good.

I truly miss Gumbel and Collinsworth.

Maybe the NFL network could do us all a favor and hire Gus Johnson(instead of him being on the CBS D-team.)

Does he do Strikeforce (MMA)??. If so, the guy is good....
 
Howard David is an excellent PBP guy. His calls would send chills down your spine. He used to team with Matt Millen for radio broadcasts of MNF back in the day. That was quite possibly the greatest NFL broadcast team ever assembled. They used to crack us up. Unfortunately they did SO well that people offered them better gigs. Millen got hired as GM of the Lions and David took the PBP job with the Dolphins along with his own daily show in Miami, which he had never had before.

Millen got fired and David eventually left Miami and is back in the radio PBP rotation with Westwood One. I say pair them back up.

 
I'm not a big fan of any of their coverage, total access, pre-game shows, etc... I think if they were not the NFL Network, and just a regular network, they'd fold with what the produce. Not my type of coverage I guess, but then again I can't think of what kind presented now is.

 
The whole production seems amateurish week in, week out. Lack of consistent replays, sound quality, listening to Pat Summerall trying to read his cue cards, (a legend, no doubt, but painful to listen to him now), etc. But, IMO, by far the worst is Papa. He is truly awful. Oddly enough, I don't have that much of a problem with Millen, who does add good insight from time to time. But Papa is horrible. Oh, and Shuke is right, but Papa is so bad there should be a thread every week. :goodposting:

 
Papa's got a face for radio. I actually like him on NFL network on sirius. I have no problem with millen. Papa is decent on radio and knows the game. He called that Wayne TD play right as they were breaking the huddle....I gave him props for that. He's not a TV guy.

<_< He is one of the best color commentators out there. Everybody needs to get his tenure as a GM out of there heads and listen to his analysis. The guy is fantastic. Him and Collinsworth are the top 2 in the NFL.
 
I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned that there were times that we missed a live play because a replay was being shown. Seems to me that is something very basic with tv football production that you shouldn't be able mess up consistently. If you can't show the replay in the time before the next live play is run, don't show any replays. I also noticed that Papa can't count and someone else was spot on in commenting on the bad tv angle for the kickoff return for a TD.

 
I had never noticed before but nfl.com's coverage blows. They "peak in live"......not exactly the same as watching it live on tv.

 
They pretty much stink but I have been turning the sound down a lot lately, turn it up if something interesting is happening.

After Gruden and MNF, most of the rest of the announcers are terrible.

they can't. it's a lost cause. apparently i missed the note in my FGB subscription that says i have to hate every single football announcer and complain about them constantly.

What I dont get is Millen was a commentator before he was a GM. Folks on this board would start a thread every week about how good a job he was doing. Now all of a sudden he sucks, what changed?
 
Millen sucks. How can he talk about any players after what he did to Detroit. He has absolutely NO credibility when it comes to analyzing players. Sometimes I have to turn the audio off on the tv because he is so sickening! :goodposting:

:thumbdown: I don't see how anyone can ignore the lack of credibility issue.
 
I'll take it over all the Renkin and Bass Christmas craptacular shows (Frosty, Rudolph, etc...) Mrs. Osaurus has clogged the DVR with in the other room.

I thought Gumble was bad. I don't think this team is terrible. I can take it.
 
I don't think Millen is too bad, but the PA in the superdome is really killing this broadcast. I'm in Dallas so I had to put 105.3 The Fan, Brad, and Babe on.

Checked the internet streaming and it wasn't the Brad and Babe, don't know if NFL has some goofy rule governing broadcast streaming.

Before becoming the Detroit GM, some considered Millen the heir apparent to John Madden as the NFL's top color commentator. He definitely had a high profile back then.
