NFL owners and NFLPA hold secret meeting in Chicago Wed. (1 Viewer)

Jones is on record saying he didn't build that stadium not to have a season. He being one of the three owners is a good sign and I feel a little better.

Exactly. And Kraft being one of the other, who as I said above was concerned about alienating fans. But then again, could be a bad thing right?

Jones is also one of the ones that pushed to terminate the previous deal early and roll a whole lot of stuff back for the players BECAUSE of that stadium. Jerry Jones is a guy that wants to have his cake and eat it too.My guess is that it's just a meeting to strategize in advance of tomorrow's court hearing. If it goes well for them, they'll have one proposal for the players, if it goes badly for them, they'll have a different proposal for the players.

They just said that D Smith was there too, so that has to be a positive sign.
I think this is pretty interesting. I hope it's a good sign. I am just trying not to get my hopes up anymore. But I don't see a scenario where this doesn't at least create some movement next week in negotiations.

Had nothing to do with the stadium. Had everything to do with a bad deal pushed through by Tagliabue so he could end his reign with labor peace. I've said it before and I'll say it again, everyone knew the owners were going to opt out.

The ESPN article noted: "So secretive some of the other owners were not aware of what was going on." Given the three outspoken owners on the lockout being present, this seems like it could have been a "status check" or confirmation of each side's position prior to going to court.

i.e. Let's not guess what we understand before the court, let's be sure.

Anything more than that I would have to assume the other owners would have at least known it was planned.

I think you're fundamentally misunderstanding Jerry Jones's role in this. If you want football played this year, you want that guy in the room. He, along with every single owner, wanted out of the previous deal. But, from a long-term financial perspective, he's the one to get into Jerry Richardson's ear and say "shut up" when it needs to be said.

Agreed. Jones is one of the "have" owners. No matter what anyone may think of his personality or his abilities as a GM, the guy is a pillar among NFL owners. He supports his team, he's found ways to grow the pie outside of just being part of the group, and he's on record as being willing to share some (but not all) of his incremental earnings for the betterment of the league. He's also a guy whose business IS football, the Cowboys are his primary enterprise. He wants a deal done, and holds sway if he gets behind a particular course of action.

You know, the more I read about this meeting, the more I like it (and hope there have been/will be more). The fact that it was not publicly known about says a few things.

1. Both sides wanted to meet. There was no court saying they had to, etc.

2. The meeting was genuine. Kind the same as 1, but with the meeting being "private" it indicates that they were there to make progress, even if the progress was just to get on the same page of where everyone stands.

3. There was no posturing to the fans or media. If the meeting is designed to be secret, no one is tubing to the media as son as it's over saying "that's the worst offer ever" or "we made an offwr, its their turn."

I guess all those points go together, but I like that this was not a public event like mediation has been. Even with the gag order, they seemed to.just be going.through the motions. There was no reason to meet yesterday like they did if it was just for show.

And perhaps the best news:http://m.nbcsports.com/s/3108/proFootballTalkDetails?itemUriVal=6f27ef3e689dad1a933da986385bda7c%2F0151281314421151461371044311&view=hdl&itemTitle=Not-so-secret%20meeting%20was%20lawyer-free%20(except%20for%20De)No lawyers!
The best sign was De Smith was there, that has to be seen as progress, even to a blind man! :nerd:

breer is now saying that they are meeting again today (until midday) and that boylan is in attendance (he was yesterday as well). But that he its not acting in the same capacity as he was in minneapolis (as a mediator). Im not sure what all this means. Maybe "not in the same capacity" indicates its not court ordered? Any ideas what all this means?

I hate to get to excited. With boylan involved it could be good or it could mean this is more court ordered stuff that isn't producing much...

We all knew they had to start meeting again at some point. Its just starting now.I'm glad they are going in that direction, this should be done within the month.

Could be that something in a proposal or counter would require some sort of court approval, or the parties needed clarification on how doing X would impact Y in terms of continuing or halting the court proceedings. And they wanted a judge/officer of the court there to help them interpret it. Just a WAG.Regardless, at first glance this would seem to be clear evidence of forward movement.

Newest reports are they are ditching mediation for settlement talk. Hopefully this means that the negotiations will be going some where, rather than the song and dance that Mediation has been.

The Dallas Cowboys' Jerry Jones, the New England Patriots' Robert Kraft, theCarolina Panthers' Jerry Richardson, the New York Giants' John Mara and the Pittsburgh Steelers' Art Rooney were the owners present in Chicago along with Goodell.

FWIW, this is the group of owners you need if you're serious about getting a deal done.

Maybe if Goodell and Smith would step out for a few minutes...

I'm not sold that Richardson being there is a great thing but the rest are people who can get this junk DONE.

I find Richardson's "power" among the ownershp group interesting. He is not in a power market, not garnered respect because of his/the family's history with the league, nor has he show the other owners how to make money that they did not see how to make. All the other guys fall into at least one of the other categories.

Notwithstanding his well publicized comments to the players earlier in the year, Richardson is fairly well respected among the ownership group and also represents the vision of the league against those who might otherwise be tempted to split into haves and have nots.

Please expand? I'm not sure about the tagliabue part, but I do think.that the opt out was inevitable

Jerry has a lot of bills to pay and some corps are NOT paying on their contracts on the suites. Jerry has A LOT to lose.Watch the 60 mins seg on Jerry, it's on their site. He says some things that are very telling. I've heard Mark Cuban say the exact same thing. No way in Hell will Jerry allow the season to be lost!!! Bank on it!

Let me get this straight...and I'll put in pictures... The lockout happened because of Jerry Jones stadium? Ok that is not even worth the argument, I wish I had words for the level of bad thinking that is. :wall: This LOCKOUT has not one dang thing to do with Jerrys stadium. 31 other owners dont give a dang about Jerrys Stadium. Are you kidding me? :doh:Yes Jerry has lots to lose, but to think 31 other billionaires care about Jerrys finances is just  :bag: At the end of the day, it only has to do with :moneybag: :saysunderbreathtoself:So there is a lockout, the season may not happen, and players are suing the league and owners because of...Jerry World? :lmao:
