NFL Player's Union...Would Goodell be more strict on penalties? (1 Viewer)

Off the field issues seem to be an even bigger issue in the last few years than they ever have been. Goodell inherited a pretty raw deal. First the New England Cheating Patriots, then all kinds of riff raff to deal with (Vick, Pacman, now Burress).

With his efforts to expand the market for the NFL to Europe with a London game the last 2 years you have to believe that these incidents are even more important for the image of the NFL. I know they’re not all thugs. But for every poster child Tom Brady there’s a thug Pacman Jones. It just seems like this is getting out of control lately.

Why doesn’t Goodell just stage a no tolerance policy and leave it at that? Break the personal conduct policy, suspended for the year without pay, on probation for the next year. Get into trouble again and sorry but you’re gone for good. You start taking away money from these “ghetto fabs” and you can bet they’ll start to obey.

Probably will never happen because of the NFL players union. I believe the players union was behind the suspension of Pacman, but I wonder where they’d stand with a harsh no tolerance policy. I have to assume that they would be against it because it’s not in place already.

It’s kind of sad that players are involved in shootings and all kinds of other violations of the personal conduct policy and yet they get off easy. You can’t do much about the legal system, but Goodell can take a stand in the NFL.

If he’s worried about stars being removed from the game, stars are easily replaced. That’s the great thing about the NFL. The next big thing is just an injury away from showing his stuff and making himself known.

I have to wonder if Rodger Goodell would have a no tolerance policy regarding personal conduct if it weren’t for the NFL players union.

Let me add, this is not a shot at unions, it is not a political statement. It is merely an attempt to see what role people think the players union has in harsher penalties being brought down on the riff raff that the NFL has to deal with lately.

EDIT: If you plan to read the thread's responces before posting yourself, please begin at Post 47. Any posts prior to that include individuals who attempted to discredit this thread by offering nothing positive to say on topic. Thank you

Without unions alot more people would be living in shacks and homeless shelters.

I guess without unions the uber rich could eat their caviar with emerald and ruby sprinkles.

If you got something to say, go ahead and say it. Is being a racist acceptable in the Shark Pool now?

Not sure an overtly political rant belongs in the shark pool.
This isn't a discussion on unions in general. The NFL union only, and if it didn't exist do you think Goodell would be more strict on personal conduct? I think he would be, but since he has to feel the wrath of a union he takes it way back and gives out suspensions that are just laughable. The biggest loophole is appealing a suspension and being able to play while the appeal is pending (Matt Jones). That is ridiculous.

Maybe the NFL should take a hint from the auto industry. They could stop putting any effort into producing products that people want, blame the union when no one buys their products, and whine to the government for a bailout.

It is not coincidental that the same people who run the Detroit Lions run the auto industry.

How is that racist?!Look at the actions of those 3. Is that not the definition of "riff raff"!?! Is that not very much "ghetto"? My focus is on the NFL. In the NFL, a white player has not been in the news with such events, so I have no example to give. I'm sure I can go and find some white trash in the news this morning and make apost about that, but this is about the NFL. You have a problem with that list being all black, well then that's not my problem. I have no control on who commits crimes in the NFL

This is a very out dated statement, this was true years ago.

I suppose your title doesn't say that the unions ruined the American auto industry? As already stated, this political/racist rant does not belong in the shark pool.Just to be clear, before this thread gets locked, it was union workers earning living wages that ruined GM/Ford, not short sighted, arrogant, greedy management. OK, I think I got it... :football:

Focus on the NFL, I think you need to change the title of this thread. As someone who once worked for that union in the Auto industry, I don't appreciate the potshot. Yeah, there will always be some bad apples but there would be people working in absolute squalor if it wasn't for unions.

Let's focus on the NFL union's impact on penalties in here please. And no, I wasn't bummed with Rush was taken off ESPN, but I do think he was dead on about McNabb. And I think we finally see that now as McNabb fails every year to deliver. Please refrain from hijacking this thread. Thank you

I have zero problems with your list being all black. I have a problem with "ghetto fabs". I can't sit on my computer and worry too much about what you say and explain to you why saying ghetto fabs is racist, I'm sure once we fixed that error in your speaking you'd come up with new racist language and still not realize it, I would warn you to choose your words more wisely when in public.

It's not? Then why bring up the UAW in your thread title? Your anti-union sentiments are apparent. FBG's forums have become a total coorporate anti-union tool. This kind of BS has become more and more prevelant.SHUT IT DOWN!!!!!

Where the heck did that come from, not sure what that has to do with NFL unions, since you're trying your best to keep this on point about NFL union. I take it you brought it up to take another shot at blacks... You're my hero. :goodposting: Any chance we got a moderator around here before this guy blows up in a full on racist rant?

What percentage of other businesses have a zero tolerance policy in regards to "ghetto fab" lifestlye?

I can see the Shark Pool is at it's best today

If you have nothing to say about the NFL player's union's affect on personal conduct penalties then do not post in here.

I changed the title to reflect more of the topic. If you care to have this discussion please start a thread in the FFA forum and I will join.

I will not respond to any personal attacks or attempts at a hijack

What percentage of other businesses are at the forefront of the daily news? What percentage of other businesses have thier employees lives plastered in the news? What percentage of businesses have a personal conduct policy as a direct result of the previous 2 questions? The NFL holds itself, or tries to hold itself to a higher standard. They expect their players to represent the NFL on and off the field. When they fail to do so penalties are put down on the players. Since the threat of the penalties are clearly not enough to keep the players from doing these things, maybe harsher penalties should be put in place. This is where the NFL union comes in. They most likely won't allow this, and it's a shame because the NFL could clean up real fast.

Yea, its amazing how a little thing like a thread title that says Unions are responsible for the worlds ills can bring out poo. Of course, if you're actually in a Union. That makes you somehow less of a person. God forbid if someone should actually defend their Union. That immediatly makes them a nut job. Negative Doc. YOU started this crap. YOU decided to place the UAW in your thread title. YOU, then decided to change the thread title not to something about the NFL players Union, but about ALL Unions. if you don't like how this thread is going. Blame yourself.

Unions served their purpose 100 years ago. Today most do nothing more than encourage sloth and leech off their host companies like some kind of parasite.

To address to orginal post, yes, the NFL Player's Union does negatively affect the sport. Players today get away with far more damaging behavior than they ever would have been able to in years past. Individual accountability has been significantly reduced.

Good to know my view is shared by othersI think the NFL union really keeps Goodell from cleaning house and getting rid of all the problem players. It's a shameAnd Playmakers was canceled why? Because it wasn't realistic... More like too realistic

What percentage of other businesses have a zero tolerance policy in regards to "ghetto fab" lifestlye?
Why create a policy for people you wont hire anyways?

On topic: I think DRDR makes a very valid point players' unions negatively affecting the sport. Case in point - the MLBPA's (baseball player union) behavior at the height of the steroid scandal. If you recall, several of the players being implicated as having used steroids wanted to submit to urine tests in order to clear their good names. The MLBPA, however, told the players that they were not permitted to test voluntarily. Their reasoning? If a few of the players volunteered, the media would then go to other (guilty) players who had been implicated and ask them why THEY hadn't done a voluntary test.

Would it have been fair for the media to demand urine tests from everyone? Of course not, but the union shouldn't have been there, telling athletes that they couldn't clear their names.

The situation with Burress, Pacman, etc. is obviously a different animal altogether, but that doesn't change the fact that unions should be closely scrutinized for their actions in protecting their poorly behaved constituents as well as their model members.
