NFL Preseason Games (1 Viewer)

So the Preseason kicks off in a few weeks...NFL Network is going to air almost all of them (of course mostly on tape delay)...I want to get a sense on how most of you will be following the games...how beneficial is it to try and watch as many games as possible? My attitude towards preseason is along the same lines as MLB Spring Training- which is I don't put much stock into what the established players do, I just monitor their health...however, when it comes to prospects/rookies/fringe players, i don't really know how to approach it...I realize there is no possible way to translate preseason stats into reliable regular season projections...and you don't necessarily need to watch the games to be updated on how depth charts are evolving throughout camp...I'm not a scout by any stretch of the imagination, but I feel there should be valuable information to be had by watching these games that you can't get by reading the box score and post game articles...any thoughts?

There's a couple things to consider with prospects during the preseason. If a player looks amazing continue to monitor them as players that can perform given an opportunity. Always temper your expectations. A lot of time a good performance will do very little to elevate their position on the depth chart. The great thing about the NFL is many times you don't have to wait very long because of turnover for multiple reasons.

You can often find value as a result of poor preseason play. Most often established RBs that see limited snaps and do little with it will see their ADP slide a bit.

I think probably the vast majority of us put way more stock into what we see in preseason than we should, just because we're hungry for anything concrete to base decisions on. As griff said, a lot of times a player who seemed to stand out in preseason games won't move up the depth chart or will even end up cut while someone who seemed unremarkable in the games makes the roster.

So I'd agree that a good thing to do is look at how you can take advantage of other owners making that mistake.

Yea, I guess Lance Kendricks was a good example of that last season...how many people bought into his preseason performance? Maybe the jury is still out on him, but he definitely burned fantasy owners who expected him to build upon his solid preseason.

FBG's Pre-season reports! :football:
Thanks BigTex...i'll definitely be checking out those reports...maybe i'll save myself from trying to over analyze preseason games...plus, if anything can get you hot water with the wifey, its telling your her "sorry honey, we can't go out to dinner tonight, its week 2 of the preseason and I need to evaluate Tannehill's five-step drop"...

I really wouldn't overanalyze preseason games, heck, I wouldn't analyze them at all. They are exhibition games, jobs are won and lost in practice. The practice reports from the beat writers are so much more important, and less likely to send you off on a wild goose chase. Some back gets all the 2nd half carries, maybe teams are showcasing him for a late summer trade, so they don't have to cut him. I use them to just a get a look at the new rookies, first chance to see Richardson, RGIII etc.

yea what these guys said.

I'll admit I've been wowed by the typical 3rd string RB, and sometimes, rightfully so.

One thing I always have to remember is, these games are all about working on things, evaluating players, and not winning. You may have a 3rd string RB running behind the 1st string line, thats goin against a 4th string D thats working on new schemes. These kinds of scenerios can lead to big plays on either side of the ball that may not normally happen in a regular season game.

It can also inflate players' ADP or let guys slip that arent seeing the field much. I've learned to look for the opportunity here. Pay attention to beat writers to find out whats goin on behind the scenes.
