NFL Propaganda Conspiracy Theories? (1 Viewer)

Do you ever stop and think about the timing and utilization of information related to the NFL, its franchises, and its players? Last year, Sandy Hook and the gun control conversation worked its way into SNF commentary. This year, Michael Sam dominated headlines not for merit of athleticism but for his sexual preference. Now, domestic violence cases are piling up and further dominating headlines. The obvious answer is that media is now instant and feeds on drama of all sorts, but I'm curious about anyone else's thoughts as well.

Eta Sandy Hook.

This makes no sense.. What are you carrying on about?

I blame Jerry Springer. Too many people have come to love any trainwreck that allows them to believe themselves superior. ESPN has joined the feeding frenzy.

The NFL and its media partners corroborate to drive narratives that the NFL feels is beneficial.

That includes the use of disinformation and innuendo as well as information, yes.

Who is Sandy Cook?

Who is Sandy Cook?
He's referring to the school shooting/massacre that took place in Sandy Hook, CT.

I am a big conspiracy theorist and an even bigger fantasy football fan so yes these thoughts have crossed my mind. It's terrible turning on espn or the news expecting to hear about sports but only hearing about drama. It's a damn shame. That's why I come here. The media is doing everything it can to turn sports into it's own reality TV show off the field. And yes, I do think it is on purpose.

I was talking with a friend who's a diehard Rams fan. I asked him, mostly in jest, if he thought that the Rams were somehow compensated by the league or other entity for drafting Sam. He laughed and then said, "hmmm..."

:whoosh:

I think the sports media drums up uncessary drama from time to time. I was thinking about this on my ride home from work yesterday. Sports used to be a very niche news topic. You'd get maybe a few highlights of your local teams on the local news at 11pm every night and that was it. You'd get the national games on once a week and that's how you saw what the other teams were doing.

Now, we have ESPN, FS1, NBCSN, NFL Network, NHL Network, MLB Network, NBATV, ESPN Radio, and any number of local sports talk radio stations. Sports is now a 24/7 business. But honestly, not much happens in sports 24/7, especially during the offseasons. So all these guys have to talk about something right? Look how ESPN would hang onto anything Tebow, LeBron, Manziel, etc, would do. Any of it newsworthy? More often than not, no. But, they have to do something to fill airwaves, so that's how we get those stories.

Do I believe that there is some conspiracy with these recent stories? No, not at all. I guess this is a long way over pointing out that the sports media has to have something to talk about. These recent incidents are just right in their wheelhouses.

So let's grant the dubious assumption that there is a media conspiracy to damage football. What's the worst that can happen, half the fans desert the game? Is it important for anyone that football be twice as popular as every other sport?

If Ray Rice hadn't knocked-out and dragged his wife around on video released to the public, Anheiser-Busch doesn't say anything. Possibly not even Radisson, though that is specific to Minn. The Peterson thing would absolutely be headline grabbing, but sponsors wouldn't have been as twitchy at that point without the Rice debacle.

I don't think so. I think he's talking about the scandal around 1340 AM WMSA's morning DJ, Sandy Cook. You don't remember this big story from last year? He tried to rob a McDonald's drive-through.

It's not even a media conspiracy to damage football...it's the fact that the media becomes a focal point when there are big stories. Big stories are fueled by outrage and unrest. Outrage and unrest is fueled by the media. It's a cycle. It's basically what happens when the news becomes a profit center. They actively seek out, and magnify every social issue by inciting people's emotions to make stories "blow up," improving their ratings, and increasing their revenue.

I hate 99% of main-stream media these days becuase of this sensationalism. I know a lot of the people involved in these media scandals deserve what they get, but some of them turn out ot be innocent people, yet the publicity granted by the media is 99% focused on them when they're accused. If they're found innocent, it's barely newsworthy.

Ben Franklin said, ""It's better to let 100 criminals go free than to convict one innocent man." The media's view is bascially the opposite. They don't care if you're actually innocent. They want the big story, and if you're proven innocent after they've basically destroyed you, they don't care.

Poor Ray Rice, just another victim of the media's sensationalism.
I don't know if that was directed at my post or not, but...see below. There's a lot more going on in the news these days than just Ray Rice/ADP/Dwyer/Hardy. We've had 2 cases go main-stream within 2 weeks of the Rice thing. Odds are we'll have more. At some point, some baby-momma will make a false claim just for the lure of $$ or fame. The media will treat that player the same way as all the others.

In simpler words - I'm not saying everyone is innocent. I'm saying the media treats everyone like they are guilty because that's where the story is.

Jon Dwyer accused of head-butting wife
Jonathan Dwyer is accused of head-butting his wife and breaking her nose after she "refused his sexual advances."

Advice: Per the police report, Dwyer "punched her in the face the next day." Dwyer also allegedly threw a shoe at his 17-month-old son during. The incidents took place in July, but Dwyer's wife - who has since left the state - came forward after he "sent suicidal text messages including a photo of a knife." It's a grim situation. Dwyer almost certainly won't play again this season

I'm biting

Media is conspiring to damage football, which will reduce football's popularity in the media, with the payoff to media being..............

Hmm, no, lets not grant that assumption.
