NFL relaxes celebration rules...finally! (1 Viewer)

Did the Eagles’ Electric Slide and bowling performances blow the “get off my lawn” contingent’s O-ring gaskets today?

Or has it kind of settled into the at-best-get-a-chuckle/at-worst-who-cares area the rest of us were in?

and rightfully so
I don't know whether to laugh or inform you that there are more constructive ways to channel your anger.

And I only say the that because these aren't Terrell Owens and the Dallas star celebrations and it worries me that you think turkey and stuffing is worth a physical attack.

Why do these make you so angry that they justify physical attacks in your opinion?

ETA: I  asking sincerely, not to bust chops or get over (or whatever). I am legitimately trying to understand why you think a violent response would be justified.

Anyone else think it’s really lame that every team now is doing the “pose for group photo” celebration?   I mean if you’re going to do a lame celebration, at least try to be original with it.

This isn’t a complaining about celebrations post, just a complaining about lack of originality post!

I think we can find a middle-ground...the "get off my lawn" contingent can ignore it and the "everybody gets a trophy" crew can put it on their Instagram account...

Question is... will there be an ESPY category for TD Celebration of the Year...

Then this thing is really gonna take off... Team websites where requests can be submitted, adding a team choreographer to the staff, OTA's for dance/ballet/hip hop/child's games, allowing props in 2018 to accommodate the fastest rising trend in NFL football, cheatsheets for the booth announcers so they can comment and give proper credits, or maybe free agents with a drama background get paid more than they would have a year ago... sky is the limit fellas!

Pretty soon people will start marrying sheep or otters or big bowls of Jell-O and then there will be total ANARCHY!!!!

What anger are you referring to?

ETA: I hope not ... if so you're not very good at it.

Fair.

OMG FANTASY CELEBRATION LEAGUES!!!

Scoring is going to be super complicated, and the NFL will have to assign a rules committee and issue official scores, but wowee I think we just struck gold with this one!

Nope. Just stopped watching.  The product has been diminished significantly in my view for several reasons, with this issue being one.  Funny thing is, I don’t even miss it.  College football is a much better product right now.

Seems as though I’m not in a small group, either.  Enjoy the ####show.

I'm not a fan of how they're covered on the TV broadcasts. They've become "events" unto themselves. It's not enough to score, now the announcer has to hype up the celebration too.

"Well, (stifled yawn) and that's a touchdown. Okay. Let's see what LaFell does! He's waving over the tight end Kroft! OK, and here comes the rest of the wide receivers. They're getting into a line! He's standing at the front of it, Bob, looks like he's ripping their tickets in half like they're going into a movie theater! Look at them, they're walking in, they're picking seats and sitting down! It looks like AJ Green is holding the football like a bucket of popcorn! Oh, this is amazing. Freeze frame that, I'm gonna get on the telestrator and draw some butter on that popcorn. I think Joe Mixon is throwing jujubees at the screen!"

They get so excited like this is a new part of the game when they make the call, but it comes off like they've been asked to hype the company line. Just a promo crew shilling. Practically WWE-level with some of the smaller market teams when I catch them on RedZone. It just feels fake and phony.
Nice...it would be even better if the announcers were the guys from Dodgeball...they could really capture this moment...

I can see how crusty old dudes (like me) would be sickened by these TD shows, but I hate to say it... but I have seen an effect on the less-than-casual NFL fans that I know AT HOME and at work. In 25-plus years together my wife has NEVER shown an interest in NFL broadcasts... UNTIL NOW. If she's in and about doing something else, she'll stop and watch if a team is in the red zone or hear's a scoring play strictly to see if there is going to be some goofy choreographed event after. I even heard her talking about how the Eagles bowling skit was the "best one yet" with one of her friends from work. Now she has the games on in the background if she's doing something else... asks me "did you see that guy get clobbered?", so she is actually getting pulled into the games... and the only thing I can base that on are these dumb skits.

Not just her either... others at work that never have shown interest before... my daughter (early 20's) and her friends talk about them... daily news shows have clips now.

Like it or not, it does seem to have a temporary effect for pulling in fringe fans. And it has created more (positive) exposure for the NFL.

I don't mind them. It's not for me, and if they stopped them tomorrow I could care less. Different strokes I suppose.

Funny, from the data I’ve seen the NFL business model seems to be heading in the wrong direction.

While ratings have slowed, NFL is still an incredibly profitable venture for the league and its owners. I think this is more affecting growth than it is hitting the NFL and its billionaires' bottom line.

So to be clear, this was the straw that broke your back? You aren't just quitting on the NFL over just the TD cellys, right? That would seem pretty extreme, to me, anyway.

Viewership has dropped every year since 2013. The product has become less watchable.  Plenty of former fans are agreeing that the NFL just isn’t worth the time any more.

The prestaged post TD productions are not the only reason, but they certainly are a factor.  The behavior of the players on the field is sickening, which IMO is especially galling given the decline in the level of play.

I’ll spend my time on something more worthwhile that watching the crap that the current NFL is.

To be clear, not denying any of it -- it's an issue the NFL needs to address, but my point is that I don't think it's hit the owner's pocketbooks. Until that happens, what is the impetus for them to meaningfully change things?

Agree, some of this stuff is getting out of hand. Talib's chain snatching, Trevathan and Burfict still headhunting, etc.

It is but it has nothing to do with touchdown celebrations.

Mark Cuban called it a couple years back and he wasn't referring to celebrations or Anthem protests.
