Does anybody know if there is a salary cap penalty in the NFL for dropping a player before his contract is up?

Any money that was actually paid to the player but hasn't "counted against the cap yet" (e.g. signing bonus which is equally "counted" over all the years of the contract) has to be counted against the cap in one of the next 2 seasons depending on cut date.

Can any clarify?
