NFL ANNOUNCES NATIONALLY TELEVISED

KICKOFF WEEKEND & THANKSGIVING GAMES

The NFL announced on Monday its 2006 Kickoff Weekend nationally televised schedule - including a Monday night doubleheader -- and its Thanksgiving Day national TV tripleheader.

In a tradition instituted in 2004, the Super Bowl champion annually hosts the NFL Thursday night season kickoff the following year. This September 7 at 8:30 PM ET, the Super Bowl XL champion Pittsburgh Steelers will oppose the Miami Dolphins as NBC rejoins the NFL's TV Family for the first time since 1997. The game will feature a quarterback matchup of Pittsburgh's BEN ROETHLISBERGER and the Dolphins' DAUNTE CULPEPPER, acquired recently from Minnesota in a trade.

On Sunday, September 10, the FOX national doubleheader game at 4:15 PM ET will feature the Dallas Cowboys at the Jacksonville Jaguars, who finished 12-4 and earned a playoff spot last season

The Sunday night primetime game (8:15 PM ET) on NBC can be called the "Manning Bowl" and it will be a history-maker. The AFC South champion Indianapolis Colts will visit the NFC East titlist New York Giants. It will be a matchup of quarterback brothers - the Colts' 30-year-old PEYTON MANNING against his sibling, 25-year-old ELI of the Giants. It will be the first time in NFL history that brothers will start at quarterback against each other.

Monday night, September 11, will feature the first regularly scheduled Monday Night Football game on ESPN, and the first regularly scheduled Monday Night Football doubleheader. The first game (7:00 PM ET) will pit the Minnesota Vikings, under new head coach BRAD CHILDRESS, at the Washington Redskins, an '05 Divisional Playoff team. The Monday night "nightcap" (10:15 PM ET) will be an AFC West meeting of the San Diego Chargers, directed by new starting quarterback PHILIP RIVERS, at the Oakland Raiders, also led by a new coach, Pro Football Hall of Famer ART SHELL.

On Sunday, September 10, CBS, which has U.S. Open tennis in the late afternoon slot, will carry a lineup of early regional NFL games. CBS will televise the NFL national doubleheader late game in Week 2.

The NFL will kick off its new late-season primetime television package on NFL Network on Thanksgiving night, giving NFL fans three games on Thanksgiving Day for the first time.

The early game that day (CBS, 12:30 PM ET) will feature the Dolphins at the Detroit Lions, under new head coach ROD MARINELLI. The second game (FOX, 4:15 PM ET) will send the NFC South champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers to Dallas to face the Cowboys.

The Thanksgiving package concludes at 8:00 PM ET on NFL Network when the top two teams in the AFC West last year meet. The Denver Broncos (13-3) will visit the Kansas City Chiefs (10-6).

The announcement of these national TV games was made Monday afternoon by NFL Commissioner PAUL TAGLIABUE at the NFL Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.

The rest of the 2006 regular-season schedule will be finalized and announced in April.

September 11, 2006 may just be a personal/mental health day for me. 3:00 p.m. PDT won't come fast enough.

September 11 Monday Minnesota at Washington ESPN 7:00 PM San Diego at Oakland ESPN 10:15 PM
I assume these are EST? If so, do they plan on staggering East and West coast games all season? Could be a lot of  for me on Tuesday's this year....

My impression is that that's just a one-time double header to celebrate opening weekend.

:bs: :bs: :bs: :bs:

10:15

The game won't be over until about 2:00am for people on the east coast. :wall:  :hot: :wall:  :hot:

And a Turkey Day game on NFL network  My cable provider doesn't have NFL Network. :hot:

awesome, didn't think there'd be any chance of Tampa getting the Turkey Day game. :excited:

That's going to be a great Thanksgiving.

4 Nationally Televised Games (Thursday, Sunday, 2 Monday) means there's "only" 11 games on the Ticket that Sunday.

Hmmm, well, as an Eagles fan, I'm trying to guess who the Birds will play that first week. I checked and the Phils are out of town that first weekend, so I think the Eagles will probably open at home.

The other three NFC East teams and the Jags are all playing someone else that weekend. That leaves Atlanta, Carolina, Green Bay, and Tennessee.

For some reason, I think they’ll throw Carolina at the Eagles right away and make it a backup 4:00 game. Just a hunch.

Green Bay belongs on Thanksgiving along with Dallas and Detroit!

My 2 cents.
Green Bay can have it as far as I am concerned. As a Steelers season ticket holder I am glad I get to stay home on Thanksgiving -- going to the stadium on Turkey day would suck.

According to Howard Eskin last week, it was supposed to be Cowboys @ Eagles for the first Sunday night game...guess not!

Shouldn't the Seahawks get one of the Monday Night opener games?
Why? They're losers.

Steelers 21, Seahawks 10. ;)

Awesome NEWS. I am pumped! The more games I get to see the happier I am! I wish Monday night went to double headers weekly but East coast employers would be p.o.ed when half the employees are late Tuesday mornings. haha It is bad enough as it is with 9.p.m starts.

Three games on Thanksgiving is a surprise too! NFL network has a long way to go to live up to ESPN/REGULAR programming expectations IMO.

Yes, because how could I ever enjoy wtching the games without Theismann or Madden?

Don't have a great reason, it just seems right......snow, Madden, Turducken, the Norse division, The Green Bay Packers. Football on Thanksgiving is a different nostalgic kind of football than the rest of the season.

IIRC, they are moving the rest of the Monday night games to 8:30PM ET after the first week, so that will help some. I imagine it's a tough balancing act between starting the games earlier for ET viewers or later for PT viewers.

September 11 Monday

Minnesota at Washington ESPN 7:00 PM

San Diego at Oakland ESPN 10:15 PM

I can already see that ESPN won't be starting the 10:15 PM game on time, with all the commercials, ESPN cut-ins & promos for programs, and usual blabber-mouth stuff.

Does it have anything to do with the fact you're a gigantic Packers homer?

I'll be taking the morning off from work on Sept 12th. Think I should tell my boss now?

guess where I will be on Thanksgiving??????

That rocks...KC just had a game with OAK on CHristmas in 2004 on Nat'l TV and now our other rival will be a national holiday game. I guess KC must draw fairly well on a national scale.

FOrget the family, I will be @ Arrowhead cooking turkey in the parking lot!

I love, LOVE that Skeletor and the gang ha sto be here on a holiday.....and it gives fans the entire day to rest up.....or drink up :banned:

I'm sure the NFL Network will somehow end up on many more cable systems by later this year. I think the doubleheader is an experiment and essentially an attempt to see if the east coast/west coast dilemma that always has bedeviled MNF can be solved in this fashion. Somehow I think it'll end up being just a once-a-year thing though. I'm guessing that ESPN would start the late game on The Deuce and pick it up after kickoff if the first game goes long.

It's interesting that they are having a Redskins game on the 5th anniversary of 9/11.

Well, I guess I'm taking some time off that day in order to get to the game by 7.But, I want to thank the NFL for giving the Skins a 1-0 start.

Or, is it possible, since it is only one game, that they will provide it to a local broadcast outlet in each market, like they do with the ESPN games?I realize this is typically done in only the local markets of the two teams and it is obviously a ploy for adding cable systems. But, I don't think it benefits them to shut out the audience that does not get NFL network.

It is a pay channel on my system. Worse, it is bundled with some other channels I have no interest in. So, for one game, I don't see myself signing up.

Does it say anything about the Giants getting 9 homes games again???
:D Some jokes just stand the test of time. This one will be around for awhile. Now only if Davenport would poop in the opposing teams lockeroom at halftime of the 9th game.

:lmao: And starting early too, as guys their age like to be in bed by 10.

Except that the ESPN announcing team is terrible. Theisman, and teh other twoi are unlistenable. They are always wrong

What a way to start the season. :thumbup:If Rivers can pull it out in that environment against the arch enemy, it will bode well for the season.
