Can anyone tell me how the regular season schedules were determined prior to the introduction of the sixteen game schedule in 1978?
It would appear that if a team was in a division of four then they would play their divisional opponents twice, teams from the rest of the conference five times, and then three games from the other conference.
In five team divisions, a team would play eight divsional games, four against other conference teams and three versus the opposing conference.
Was there any logic used in determining which teams a club would face outside it's division / conference each season? Any information or links would be much appreciated.
TIA.
