SD had 436 rushes, 582 passes and was sacked 30 times. That adds up 1048. So I'd guess scrimmage plays are rushes and "drop backs". The 9 discrepency could be perhaps the number of times they took a knee?
ETA: I see you said 2010 season not 2011. 544 pass attempts, 38 sacks and 457 rushes adds to the 1039.
