The Patriots season is really, really impressive. Damned hard to have the best record in the NFL against that schedule.

eh. They've played 8 winning teams. Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Baltimore have all played 7. I'm more interested in the pretenders this reveals. At 1-4, you'd think Jacksonville will get rolled this weekend - but then you see the Colts are only 2-4. Tampa has yet to beat a winning team. They've had a good season, but I think they're not yet for real.

NEP 7-1 .875 - Well, yeah

ATL 5-2 .714 - That game vs NO in the Superdome.... a missed gimme by Hartley. No, just no.

PHI 4-2 .667 - With Vick or Without? With, with they're 4-1. {Fixed}

NOS 2-1 3-0 .667 1.000 - Better.

SDC 3-2 .600

CHI 3-2 .600

PIT 4-3 .571 - Who wants to play the Pats in F'boro? Who?

BAL 4-3 .571 - Who wants to play the Pats in F'boro? Who?

SEA 2-3 .400 - Add +1 for Atlanta next week.

TEN 3-5 .375

NYJ 2-4 .333 - Never mind.

IND 2-4 .333 - Never mind.

CLE 3-7 .300 - They only have 5 wins altogether; why don't they have more?

MIA 2-5 .286

HOU 2-6 .250

DAL 2-6 .250 - But 2-2 of late; quite nearly 3-1.

STL 1-3 .250 - Cue Jim Mora.

JAX 1-4 .200 - Without Josh Scobee this is the Bucs.

ARI 1-4 .200

CAR 0-8 .000

MIN 0-8 .000 - Wow, what kind of odds would this have gotten before the year?

BUF 0-9 .000 - Lil' Stevie Touchdown hasn't really been the same since that early Steeler Xmas present.

incorrect, the Eagles lost to Chicago a few weeks ago

:kicksrock: That miss kick could very well be the single most important miss in the NFC this year. Hartley makes that and Saints could have 1st round bye and HFA. That miss will now have the Saints travel too STL or worse SEA and then possibly CHI or PHI in January.

This list is skewed by the obvious fact that by beating a team you are causing their record to go under .500. For example, if you are the Jacksonville Jaguars and you just beat a 6-6 Raider team, under the precept of this sort, you are penalized for beating a below . 500 team. There is a cause/effect principle to keep in mind. Also, this list is not as static as the snapshot list you see. A number of teams on this list were losses while they were above .500 to that point in the season. So if a team beat an above .500 team that had injuries or coaching changes or fell off for whatever reason, then you don’t get credit for beating a “tough team”. There is no factor that adjusts for relative strength at the time of schedules.

The principle of qualifying winning percentages of above .500 teams is as analogous as the dynamics of Hooke’s law regarding spring theory (i.e., the force a spring exerts is proportional to its extension). i.e, it’s not a good measure of a team’s strength by measuring just who they beat, but how they beat them. There are many variables to look at. That’s why the monstrous run of beatdowns the Patriots have put together is all that more impressive.

Of course, major props to NE for their recent run. They deserve all the accolades they have been getting. But this snapshot list is too simplistic a list to define in uncertain terms pretenders from contenders. That being said, the teams at the top are pretty much the cream of the crop, so it’s not a worthless list either.

I don't think the Bucs are a great team but they are better than this stat makes them look. Two losses to the Falcons by terrible calls and a loss to the Ravens becasue of a garbage pass interference call. No excuses for getting beat by the Steelers & Saints though as those were clear cut but whoopings.

*ETA* Those 2 wins against the Bucs (a winning team) also makes Atlanta look like a much better team.

In summary, the Bucs are about as good as their record indicates an the Falcons aren't as good as their record indicates. :goodposting:

Not really, those weren't terrible calls only a Bucs homer would think that way... oh wait. Falcons beat Baltimore, New Orleans, Green Bay, Tampa Twice... almost beat the Steelers and had one really bad game against the Eagles, pretty impressive. The most impressive team so far for me though is New England... though they did lose to Cleveland.

JAX 1-4 .200 - Without Josh Scobee this is the Bucs.
In the Jags' defense, 3 of those 4 losses were in week 7 or earlier. The most recent loss against a winning team was coughing up a halftime lead on the road vs the Giants.

That thing has been eating away at me all season. Hartley is money, just as long as the kick is at least 43 yards.

There is no evidence that your record vs teams over .500 determines playoff success.

The Bears won the NFC in 2006 despite going 0-2 against winning teams in the regular season.

The Giants won the Super Bowl in 2007 despite going 1-5 against winning teams in the regular season.

The Cardinals won the NFC in 2008 despite going 2-5 against winning teams, and an 8-8 regular season record.

All that really matters is you play well in postseason. What we've learned is that, if you get hot at the right time, you can go to the super bowl and even win it.

"PHI 4-2 .667 - With Vick or Without? With, with they're 3-1. {more Fixed}"

For the sake of accuracy one of those wins was with Kolb, not Vick.

"Kevin Kolb threw for 326 passing yards and three touchdowns as the Eagles cruised by the Falcons 31-17 at Lincoln Financial Field for their first home win of the 2010 season. "

Update through end of regular season:

Packers: 4-3 +41

Bears: 3-3 -38

Steelers: 3-4 +3

Jets: 2-4 -37

My conclusion from this is that the Browns might regret canning Mangini - 10 games against winning teams and they got 3 wins!

I think they get worse before they get better with a new coach...
