NFL Teams reputation (1 Viewer)

FUBAR

Footballguy
The Alex Smith trade got me thinking about how different NFL franchises seem to have a philosophy they don't change from much through time and some seem to just be luckier than others.

Not all franchises have a firm reputation, and recent success has an effect on our thoughts, but what do you see as the modus operandi and/or reputation of the NFL franchises?

I'll edit as we get shared opinions. My initial thoughts are listed:

Arizona Cardinals

Atlanta Falcons

Baltimore Ravens - Solid defense and running game

The Lions ( led by their clueless owner) are pathetic. The fact that their winningest coach is Wayne Fontes and their passing leader played six decades ago tells you all you need to know.

Bengals -- strong drafting front office that has taken advantage of character-based market inefficiencies to become a near-perennial playoff team despite playing in a tough division.

The Detroit Lions have a well earned reputation. Great fan base but by far the worst management in the NFL. What team would hire the protege of the worst GM in NFL history? The Lions of course..and the the protege goes on to draft in the same mold as his mentor. Any other NFL franchise would have cleaned house and the losing culture from team President,GM,HC..everybody. The Lions promote. The sad thing about the Lions is that I truly believe that they want to win as bad as anybody..they just don`t know how.

(nsfw but accurate and hilarious)

redskins - over analyzed by fans and media that leads to coaches and players underperforming. always searching for that high priced f.a. to save them.cowboys - felony flats.vikings - good on paper but the ultimate chokers.raiders - highest penalized team in the league because of al's meddling and coaches that cant get the locker room under control.eagles - fans threw snowballs at santa.san fran - changed the face of the league with wco.chargers - constantly letting franchisable playres walk with out viable replacements. brees, vj, sproles, turner ...

New York Giants - NFL's Bellwether..cream of the crop, the Yankees of NFL..Classy owners.Classy organization. out for the good of the game and the league..Wellington Mara was the Patriarch of the NFL..

The Buffalo Bills are not Canada's team. As a Canadian living on the West Coast, ie Vancouver, I can tell you, we don't care about the Bills. If any team is our team, its the Seattle Seahawks because they are the closest NFL team on the West Coast. Buffalo might be Toronto's team, but my sense is that NFL fans living in Toronto don't care about the Bills either, they're just the closest team. There is a large following for the Seahawks, 49ers, and maybe the Raiders or Cowboys.

Sorry, but if you want to be taken seriously you've got to be a little more intelligent than this. If you believe 'spygate' was the be-all, end-all of sports scandals, fine, but you need to qualify that stance because it's a minority opinion, like it or not.State something that mentions them as the NFL's 'evil empire', or whatever--nobody wants another NE ballwashing. But it's clearly biased to sum up the reputation of such a notable franchise with 'cheaters, but they win'; it's as if you want to affect reputations rather than learn about them.

Actually, those that don't believe the Patriots were/are cheaters are in the minority (and that group is mainly made up of Patriots fans). Sorry but they did cheat and cheated in a way that was done to impact game situations. As the thread title said, reputations warranted or not - that is the reputation the Patriots have - warranted or not.

It's not what I believe that matters here. I happen to be a fan of Tom Brady but your homerism is blinding you to the opinion held by many across the nation. More should be listed for the Patriots and probably for all franchises, I'm just trying to spark discussion to see what the reputation of each team is. The Patriots might be the most controversial team in the NFL. I respect Kraft and Brady, while my opinion of BB is mixed.

But I thought everything Canada revolved around Toronto?!?!?! I completely agree that we're a mixed bag up here and there's no chance someone I know would suggest that the Buffalo Bills are "Canada's team"

Fair enough. I'll change it. FWIW, this was meant more for how Americans see the teams, not other nations.

The Pats are the winningest team in the NFL this century, and are known for being extremely well-coached and deadly efficient, both on and off the field. Even the most casual NFL fans have an opinion about them, good or bad--they are the single-most significant team in the league. You sum all this up as 'cheaters, but they win', because they ignored a 2005 rule change about where a team can place their video assistant when he's taping opposition signals--I expressly say they're an 'evil empire', yet you still see sufficient reason to call me a 'blind homer'.Like I said, if you want to be serious...

Raiders - vertical offenseCardinals - Bidwell's are cheapFalcons - no fanbaseChargers don't really have a tradition. They had a wide open aerial with Fouts but they reached the Super Bowl in 94 with a team that was defense and running game with Stan Humphries as a game manager. Then they were a running team with Tomlinson and then they opened the air attack up again with Rivers.Chiefs - almost always hire head coaches that had at least one winning season with other teams. Andy Reid, Romeo Crennel, Herman Edwards, Vermiel, and Schottenheimer all fit the mold. They only deviated twice in the past 20+ years, hiring Gunther Cunningham and Todd Haley.Bengals - they are the anti-Chiefs. They have only hired a head coach with previous head coaching experience twice: Forrest Gregg and Bruce Coslet. The rest of their hires were never a head coach before. But that's because the ownership is cheap.Jets - their tradition is horrible first round draft picks that make their fans cry. Giants - sacking the quarterback. They always seem to have a pass rush from Lawrence Taylor to Jason Pierre-Paul.Seahawks - toughest house for visiting teams in the NFL. The Seahawks like to hire head coaches who led a team to a title elsewhere. Mike Holmgren and Tom Flores won Super Bowls elsewhere. Dennis Erickson and Pete Carroll won the college national championship prior to coaching the Seahawks. 4 of the last 5 Seahawks head coaches fit this pattern, except for Jim Mora.

Indianapolis Colts - Symbol is a horse shoe for a reason; most Lucky team in the NFL
Why are the Colts considered so lucky?
Seriously?
Has there been anything luckier than having Peyton go down in the year that led to Luck?
Until Luck wins a ring, Montana -> Young and Favre -> Rogers seem luckier.
Packers got screwed out of a 1st round bye by the Fail Mary. 49ers had the 1.1 when Alex Smith and Rodgers were available and took Smith.Peyton and Luck are the 2 best prospects in the last 20 years. Colts had the 1.1 both times. They win the luckiest team award.

 Depends how you define luck I suppose, but trading for a player who was a "bust" and taking one that falls out of the top 20 picks is a different kind of luck than having one bad year after a decade of 10 win seasons, which allowed the top prospect in 10 years (or so) to fall in their lap.

You can say they were lucky with Manning and Luck. But they weren't lucky in 1992 when they wasted the first two picks in the draft on Steve Emtman and Quentin Coryatt. And they weren't lucky in 1990 when they blew the top pick on Jeff George. And they certainly weren't lucky in 1983 spent the top pick on John Elway, then had to trade him to Denver because he wouldn't play for them.I've just never considered them all that lucky, since they've had so many heartbreaking losses in the playoffs.

Luck doesn't override making bad decisions; it just puts you in position to make the right ones.
