OK, now that NFL hirings are taking place, interviews are being conducted and rumors are flying, I thought it was a good time to start a new thread that framed where we were in the process to date on each major job opening around the league:

Head Coaching Vacancies

New York Giants -- Tom Coughlin agreed to a 4 year deal valued at $11 million. The hire was probably the least surprising, which is why it was the first one done. Mara wanted the "anti Fassel" and got him in Coughlin, a noted disciplinarian.

Washington Redskins -- WOW. After interviewing retreads in Fassel, Denny Green and Ray Rhodes, the Skins dropped a blockbuster on the world by persuading Joe Gibbs to return as Skins head coach.. It's reported that the deal will be in the $5 million range, with provisions in place for Gibbs to remain with the team after he's finished coaching. It's also believed that Greg Williams, the Bills' deposed HC, is in line to be Gibbs' defensive coordinator.
Atlanta Falcons -- Another wide open search, the Falcons have already interviewed six candidates; including five defensive coordinators (Jim Mora Jr., Lovie Smith, Romeo Crennel, Tim Lewis, and Wade Phillips (the Falcons own DC and interim HC) along with Pittburghs' Mike Mularkey. Mora has been scheduled for a second interview and Tim Lewis's second interview was cancelled.
Arizona Cardinals -- The Cardinals had interviewed four people: Crennel, Fassel, Green and Jim Johnson and have reportedly offered Dennis Green the job. Reports suggest that Green is interested because a) he believes he can turn the franchise around, b) the team is promising him significant personnel control (which implies a demotion for Rod Graves). While the deal isn't done (Green apparently wants more money), this is looking like it could happen, particularly because Green appears a bit scrared off by the Raiders situation.
Buffalo Bills -- John "The Professor" Clayton has suggested that Jim Fassel is the likely choice for the Bills job, but Pats OC Charlie Weis also had a great interview, reportedly. The team has also interviewed Lovie Smith, **** Jauron, Jerry Gray (the Bills DC this year), and Romeo Crennel AND will interview one final candidate, Pittsburgh OC Mike Mularkey, before making a decision.
Chicago Bears -- Still considered a wide open race. The Bears have interviewed three defensive coordinators already: Pats Romeo Crennel, 49ers Jime Mora Jr and St. Louis' Lovie Head Coaching VacanciesSmith, but are far from done. They contacted KC OC Al Saunders, but have yet to complete an interview because Saunders met with the Raiders instead during the bye week. They are also reportedly interested in Ravens DC Mike Nolan (interviewed tomorrow) Nick Saban, who is personal friends with Chicago, would be at the top of the list but the team is treading lightly, waiting to see if Saban's intermediaries make it known he's available. And the latest news involves U of Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen.
Oakland Raiders -- While it was thought Denny Green would take the job because a) Davis would pay him well, b) Green's a west coast guy and c) Bruce Allen's departure meant the HC would have more personnel control than expected...Green now appears to be leaning toward Arizona. To date, Davis has only interviewed Denny Green and Al Saunders, but the list is expected to expand to include any number of coaches. Coordinator Vacancies

New York Jets Defensive Coordinator -- While TB D-line coach Rod Marinelli was thought to be the front runner, the fact that he's an assistant head coach appears to make him untouchable. Gregg Williams interviewed for the job but will instead join Joe Gibbs in Washington. Deposed Giants DC Johnnie Lynn interviewed this week and plan to speak to the Eagles LB coach Ron Rivera and Titans LB coach Gunther Cunningham (a long time Schottenheimer assistant).
Minnesota Vikings Defensive Coordinator -- Ted Cottrell is believed to be the front runner, but ESPN's Chris Mortensen is suggesting that Tice is having difficulty attracting a lot of top guys because of his lame duck status. Dave McGinnis, who has personal ties to Tice, was thought to be a candidate but hasn't interviewed as of yet or been mentioned as a prominent option.
Pittsburgh Steelers Defensive Coordinator -- With Tim Lewis being let go, speculation abounds about who will replace him as Cowher's right hand man. Many believe that Lewis was let go because Cowher already has his replacement in house in the name of Will Robinson, the Steelers current D-backs coach. Apparently Robinson was on the short list for several DC jobs elsewhere; this could insulate Cowher from losing a young guy he values.
Cleveland Browns Offensive Coordinator -- Terry Robiskie is the likely hire (current receivers coach) if Ted Tollner, Butch Davis' first choice, isn't let interview by SF. There is some talk that if Jim Mora Jr. gets a HC job, Greg Knapp may go with him as offensive coordinator, and Dennis Erickson would then elevate Tollner to that post.
Washington Redskins Offensive and Defensive Coordinators -- According to published reports, Gregg Williams (the recently deposed Buffalo Bills head coach) will join Joe Gibbs' staff as defensive coordinator. Apparently Joe Bugel is also going to be the assistant head coach and line coach; whether that's in lieu of a traditional offensive coordinator remains to be seen.
New York Giants Offensive and Defensive Coordinators -- No word yet on who Coughlin is eyeing as his chief lieutenants.Front Office Vacancies

Miami Dolphins GM -- Although it's believe Ron Wolf was approached about the job, he's likely to take on an "advisory" role, according to Chris Mortensenand groom a new hire. Baltimore's director of player personnel, Phil Savage, had a great interview apparently.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM -- Bruce Allen, who just resigned as senior assistant to the Raiders, is expected to be named either VP or GM in Tampa Bay in the next day or two, according to Chris Mortensen. The Jets' assistant GM Mike Tennenbaum, Giants Player Personnel man Jerry Reese and TB Player Personnel man Tim Ruskell were also considered for the job.
Oakland Raiders GM -- Bruce Allen left the team and there is talk that Mike Lombardi, director of player personnel, may join him. But the personnel hire probably won't happen until Davis has a coach in place. Stay tuned.Cheers

Heres My Take:Arizona - Dennis Green will take the job here. The only thing left to determine is how much money he will get. The Cardinals want Green and are more than willing to give him the control he wants. This will be a good hire for the Cards as Green can build them into a competitive in time for their move to a new stadium.Atlanta - Lovie Smith - There are too many ties for this not to happen. Interviewing Phillips is just a courtesy and Mora Jr. is just not the right fit at this time. Smith will work wonders adding speed and agression to their D, but how their offense will fair will depend entirely on who he brings in as OC.Buffalo - Charlie Weis. Fassel came and left without an offer nor did he he stay for his second day of interviews as originally planned. That doesnt totaly rule him out but it doesnt look good either. The Bills will definetly draft a guy with an offensive background, Weis already has worked with Bledsoe and knows the AFC East. Plus I just think Donahoe enjoys taking people from his rivals. Not my personal preference but it should work out just fine for the Bills.Chicago - Jim Mora Jr. So much for for hiring an offensive minded coach. Mora Jr. was too impressive in interviews not to be considered. He will bring in a great offensive staff now they will just need some offensive players.

Don't count out Jim Mora Jr. forthe Falcons just yet...While Lovie's ties to McKay are an advantage, consider these factors1) Mora Jr. is more experienced at the pro level.2) Having worked in San Francisco for so many years, he has better relationships with more qualified offensive minds than does Lovie Smith. Could Smith, who has said he would bring in elements of the Rams offense if he were the HC have access to an OC that could properly teach and implement what the Rams do? I'm not sure. With Mora, he could turn to Greg Knapp or Marty Mornhinweg who are qualified to bring the West Coast offense to Atlanta.3) Even with Lovie's ties to McKay, why would McKay feel either endangered or challenged by Mora if he were to bring him on board. Blank and McKay have said "we are looking for a coach, not a king". Doesn't Mora fit that description?Whereas I was 90% sure Lovie would be the next coach of the Falcons, I'm down to 50% now...

good points and you are dead on with #2. The Falcons offense would be better suited for what Mora would bring. Mora was my second opinion of whom the Falcons would hire. I just feel the ties with Lovie smith are too strong.

Denny will wait on Oakland before accepting here. I think the Cardinals would be better for him, but he REALLY loves the Bay Area, and first and foremost would rather coach here, despite the Raiders issues. And, while he won't get quite the control he would in Arizona, he will get more than initially expected with Allen's leaving (This is assuming Al decides to go his way.)

even with this quote?:
Green said Tuesday night he believes the Raiders situation could be "treacherous," even given the coach's long and close relationship with owner Al Davis.

Has Al Saunders pulled himself out of Oakland yet? He would be another good choice for the type of offense he has in KC is right up Al Davis' alley. Now he would need to find some speed at WR besides Porter.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Regarding Chicago--I am utterly clueless on what options Angelo has left. He's pi$$ed off at Fassel's people, can Fassel's agent work things out with Angelo if the Buffalo gig doesn't happen?, I think Saban is using the NFL to sweeten up his deal in LSU, and Ferentz is not going anywhere just yet IMHO. Is Mike Nolan the guy or Mora, Jr. Help me out with Mora Jr.. My first reaction is "Dittley Poo" Jr. with the fruit not falling far from the tree, and my second is this is another **** Jauron. Why should I be excited about him?The thing I am now getting a tad concerned about is that everyone is going to pass by the Bears as far as decisions go. All the other teams, like with what happened with the Jauron hire, will tap (maybe wrong choice of words ;) ) out all the good OC's and DC's leaving the dregs again for whomever is the HC.

LOL...sorry guys. Had to jump into two conference calls at work and it took me a while to construct the linkages./ \ | | | | | | |Please see my original post aboveCheers!

Work--I hate when that happens.

I'm shocked that as this unfolds, I'm seeing NOTHING about Kirk Ferentz. I appear to have been mistaken, as I thought he was a lock to go to the NFL. He'd be good at it too...HERD

Reportedly Fassel's interview in Buffalo did not go especially well, which makes it sound more like Charlie Weis may end up with that job. (As a Bills homer, that would be my preference, but I would be fine with Fassel too). Interesting that Fassel could end up missing out on a HC position this year, based on Wood's analysis above.Edit to add that there are some disturbing rumors out there (CNNSI) that **** Jauron is our leading candidate. :bag:

It looks like Fassel will become the odd man out but he was my first choice for the bills. All the tools are here for the type of offense he would run. I'm sure Charlie Weis would be a good fit as well as he could get the most out of Bledsoe. It certainly does look like he is the front runner. I just hope we dont hire Mularky. I would also like to see us at least interview Marv Levy as he has expressed interest in returning to coaching. I'm not saying hire the guy but at least hear him out...I feel he has earned that.My Preference for buffalo:FasselLevyWeis

I still think that Ferentz's name will come up. Many of the teams that are looking at college coaches were/are waiting to see if Saban will bite before they talk to Ferentz. I think he may end up with one of the teams that miss out on the top guys (Chicago-Tim Floyd Dejavu)

Atlanta Falcons --

Romeo Crennel

Arizona Cardinals --Crennel

Buffalo Bills -- Romeo Crennel

Charlie Weis

Chicago Bears --Romeo Crennel
Dammit people, we have a Super Bowl to win! Leave them alone and let them get their jobs done!

I hope that Angelo can get over being upset at Fassel's agent and re-schedule an interview. If Fassel doesn't get the Bills gig, I think Angelo would be doing a dis-service to the Bears organ-I-zation by overlooking an NFL coach who has had success.I also hope that he continues to pursue Al Saunders. To me, he would that would be an awesome hire for the Bears.

Ferentz' name may come up, like it did last year, but I think he is more grounded than Saban. He may eventually go to the NFL, but it won't be for 3 years +, IMHO>BTW, your analysis/comments were worth the wait Woodrow

Don't worry. Crennel and Weis will have plenty of time to come in for 2nd interviews after this weekend. :D

Ferentz looks to be staying at Iowa, according to various reports. Chicago wanted to interview him but backed off upon learning that he wasn't really interested.Cheers

Interesting that Fassel could end up missing out on a HC position this year, based on Wood's analysis above.
Maybe I missed this earlier, but why doesn't Fassel's previous experience as Oakland assistant coach (1995) make him a reasonable candidate for the Raiders?

It does, I actually thought Fassel would end up in Oaktown but he hasn't interviewed and by all accounts Fassel hasn't made overtures in that direction. Remember that Fassel apparently felt comfortable enough with his chances in D.C. Zona and Buffalo that he cancelled a trip to Chitown for a Bears interview too. If Fassel loses out on the Buffalo job, which now looks possible, and Denny Green takes the Zona job, I wouldn't be surprised to see Fassel get back into the fray in Oaktown.Cheers

Not sure if anything has been mentioned but Callahan is interviewing for the Giants for the OC job.Edit to add: I think they said something about Jauron has D Coordinator but I don't know it was pretty early this mourning.

San Diego has an opening for Defensive Coordinator as well. Cottrell is reportedly the leading candidate there.

Woodrow, I read a couple of days ago on ProFootball Talk that Angelo cancelled the interview with Fassel because Angelo was pi$$ed off at Fassel's agent for neither confirming nor denying any sort of deal b/t Fassel and Buffalo.Angelo didn't want to be 'used' as leverage in Fassel's negotiations with Buffalo, so he cancelled the interview. Now IF that is true, fine, but if Fassel doesn't get the gig in Buffalo, then Angelo has to swallow his pride and at least bring Fassel in for an interview.

That could happen. I think you're right Lefty...at the time it seemed like Fassel was going to land in Buffalo. But, interestingly enough, he hadn't interviewed there yet and according to Mortensen, the Weis interview knocked the Bills socks off to the point where they may be leaning in his direction. I could see Angelo trying to rekindle the Fassel talk if the Bills gig goes away, but it now looks like Friedgen is the guy du jour in Chitown.Cheers

I think Saunders name has not resurfaced because many think he will stay in K.C. Saunders would be a fool to take a Head Coaching job this year when he knows Vermeil plans to retire after next year and Saunders would be the front runner for that job.
If that is the case, then why has Oakland come calling?
I guess Oakland is not one of the many that think he is staying in K.C.Really though do you think Saunders should take any of the Head Coaching Jobs this year? just wondering.

I think Vermeil made it clear to him that it's his job when he retires, but KC isn't a lock to be competitive in a year or two either. Priest will be 33/34 at that point, Trent Green will probably have priced himself out of the job unless he restructures again (which he could) and you've got to see how the defense develops in the context of the current salary cap structure.Cheers

As we all know the NFL stands for 'not for long'.......There are no guarantees in life and if the opportunity comes calling, why wouldn't Saunders jump on it?Of the 2, I would think that the Chicago situation looks a bit rosier than Oakland, but that is me. I just want the Bears to do what they have to do to get someone in, before they are again the last organization hiring a Head Coach AND the coaching staff.
