NFLPA Opposes Blood Testing For HGH (1 Viewer)

From the Footballguys News Blogger:

National Football League Players Association executive director Gene Upshaw said on Saturday that his organization does not currently support the idea of taking samples of players blood in order to test for the growth hormone HGH. "When you start talking about coming in to take a person's blood, that's different than taking someone's urine," Upshaw said. "I know personally I would have a problem with someone coming in and trying to take the players' blood. I'm not ready to make that leap."

what's quincy carter think of it though?

seriously, can't they do something with hair and drugs?

I'm a rather healthy 40 year old and I don't believe for 1 second a players union in any sport will ever allow the drawing of blood from players while I'm alive. never going to happen. They will need to develop a much less intrusive way to detect HGH if they want to catch it.

These guys get jabbed with needles all the time. For their physicals, for treatments, etc. Don't think for a second this has anything to do with privacy or anything like that. This is an implicit admission that the players are using HGH and that they'll fight any attempts to test for it.

Can't this test be performed with a finger #####? (haha just said finger ##### :) ) Seriously though, like a diabetes sugar test? That would be about as less-intrusive as you could get.

My guess is that need a sufficient sample to test, and if positive run a confirmation test. Wouldn't a hair follicle test pick up HGH. I know it is more accurate then urine for most drugs; and, it's hard to say that a strand or two of hair is invasive.

Just seems like a traditional union-head stance to me. Upshaw obviously will want to bargain for any type of change in the drug testing policy.

How do you define intrusive/invasive. ANY intrusion however large or small should be considered a violation of privacy. Where do you draw the line? You can't put a degree on invasive/intrusiveness.

Upshaw was on ESPN radio yesterday and discussed this issue at length. According to Upshaw, the NFL and the Union analyzed the results of the HGH testing in Athens and found it to not be sound. Too many false positives. His position is until there is a test that can determine HGH with the certainty that other drug test have, they won't accept testing. Instead the Union and NFL have a professor at UCLA trying to develop a better test for HGH.

Another issue that I found interesting was the HGH test would have to be done right after a game to be valid and there was some concern with drawing blood from a player directly after the ball game.

Just to back up some of the Union's position, I have heard in the congressional hearings that the problem with detecting HGH is poor quality test available at this time.

There is another story behind this. If you've seen "The Sixth Day", you'll understand what the players are worried about....being replaced with their clones. :-)

HGH = human growth hormone. It's a natural substance. Everybody has HGH in their system. Everyone's hair follicle test would be positive. It's the amount in your body [adjusted for age] that determines whether you're injecting it or not. Can't be determined from urine or a finger stick. Since millions of people have diabetes, they've refined glucose testing to a very small sample size. Not that many people need HGH testing
