Nick Bosa Deletes Pro Trump - Anti Kaepernick Tweets (1 Viewer)

Sorry if honda.

Future draft pick Nick Bosa made news after ESPN reported he deleted tweets he thought would be damaging.

Some were Pro Trump and others were ripping Kaepernick and Beyonce.

https://www.si.com/nfl/2019/04/10/nick-bosa-twitter-donald-trump-colin-kaepernick-nfl-draft-san-francisco-49ers

Presumably, the 49ers could be in play for selecting Bosa.

What completely bums me out is I have a good friend who's a smart guy and has a great heart.

On hearing this, he said Bosa was now the player he hates most in all the league.

I pushed a little about whether it was really "hate" or not. And he backed off some. But it just seems like we're in a terrible spot with this. Not sure of the answer.

Meh, much like most of the Kaepernick brouhaha it amounts to a bunch of nothing but I do wish sometimes people would man up and own their words.  Charles Barkley comes to mind as a good example of doing that.

Not saying you can't be swayed or persuaded to apologize or amend but don't back away by deleting what is out ther forever anyway.

I agree with you, leave politics out of our game.

Joe I have no problem telling family and friends that the Saints and football belong to me, it’s my sport and it connects me to my family, my friends and my city, and if they want to put anything between me and that they can stuff it. They respect that when I say it to them and let me tell you it is some satisfying.

Anyone that defends Kaepernick's right to be political should defend Bosa's right to be political.  Anyone that thinks Kaepernick should keep his politics out of the NFL should feel the same about Bosa.

I'm in the Just Shut Up camp.  But if they are going to put their opinions out there then be prepared to deal with the haters and don't claim to be a victim.

All kidding aside, conservatives often post in this forum when some liberal celebrity pops off about something, and I'll say the same thing here as I say in those cases: I don't care about someone's political views just because they're famous (within a certain range; if they're engaging in hateful rhetoric or aligning themselves with truly unsavory characters, that's different. But if it's just political opinions I disagree with, I can't be bothered.)

So in Bosa's case, that means:

  • He's allowed to express whatever political opinions he wants
  • Unless they cross a line, I won't pay much attention
  • If he ends up on my favorite team, I wouldn't have any problem rooting for him
  • If he's worried that his political views might affect his draft position, then he should delete his old tweets. Or not. Did I mention I don't care?

Deleting them makes sense.

Your friend seems irrationally angry.

Couple of points.

I never really opted in to the social media world.  I don't have FB, Twitter, Instagram accounts and won't.  But that was just me because I thought it was dumb.  I've come around on this to think it is really toxic in a lot of situation and can frequently damage people who decide to live their lives online.  I don't think we were meant to share our entire lives with people.  Everybody makes mistakes and says dumb stuff - why you want to open yourself up to that scrutiny for people to see it is confusing to me.

I do think Trump and pro/anti Trump fans have helped usher in the idea of zero tolerance for differing opinions and it's not a good thing.  There's little discussion or nuance.  There's a ton of issues out there and instead of allowing people to have opinions on an issue independently we like to lump people in to these broad camps.  Honestly, I sometimes hesitate to give my opinion on topics because I don't want to be labeled.  I was a proponent of BIG (Basic Income Guarantee) before it became a bigger topic - now, you are labeled a socialist for bringing it up.  And it happens in reverse - to take the Kaep example, I know people who had opinions and thoughts on the flag and national anthem demonstrations long before the Kaep controversy and just because they hold a similar opinion to Trump they get labeled too.  It honestly makes us look like simpletons and unable to have nuanced conversations.

Agree it makes sense - millions are on the line for him.  What makes even more sense is to not post things to begin with and/or have someone filter what you say.  This forum is the only place I post/share on the internet and it's anonymous - I have no doubt that nobody cares about my opinion and even if they did I wouldn't share it non-stop on every topic.  It just seems crazy to me.

I think it's just a smart PR move my Bosa.  If you want to make a brand for yourself and cater to as many fans and sponsors as possible it's usually best to stay away from making political comments on social media.

I think you're taking what your friend said a little too literally.

I’m not sure deleting such posts makes sense when all it has done is draw attention to the posts that aren’t and never were going to be erased from the permanent record that is the internet.  They are the musings of a kid who’s grown up on social media platforms geared toward reactive words rather than thoughtlful analysis, the posts really are inconsequential to anything.  Unless and only if posts are inherently violent or illegal, we should approach the content with a large grain of salt

Someone above mentioned a sort of zero tolerance approach by each “side” toward their counterpart and that’s a pretty good description of how this type of thing plays out.  A lot of us, the media, and the general public could benefit from stepping back and realizing that opposing opinions aren’t something to get worked up about and allow to infect our overall approach to people.

he also has to consider his teammates and how they will look at him knowing he's a Trump supporter.  in a locker room of majority African American players, supporting a racist isn't going to get you off on the right foot.  players have never really had to deal with this before because it wasn't a big deal to support GWB or Clinton or whoever.  that's all changed with Trump.

4-5 sacks and some pressures in his first 6 games and all will be forgotten.  Bosa called Kappy a clown...so have many others.

If Bosa would fall to the Lions at 8 I wish he would repost all his tweets.

Being a MAGA guy hasn’t hurt Brady.

Brady has never made a pro-Trump tweet, never described himself as a "Trump supporter", did not attend the Patriots' Super Bowl celebration at the White House in 2017, and refused to commit to going to the White House in 2019.

(That's not to say that Brady and Trump aren't friends. But Brady is smart enough not to get mixed up in politics and become a lightning rod, unlike Bosa.)

Brady is also 40 years old and Bosa is a college kid.  Most college kids aren't as smart as 40 year olds with a lot more life experience

As someone that is pro-America/pro-Trump
I don’t care about Bosa one way or another. If he’s on my team I’ll root for him.

But the above comment annoys me. Perhaps it is meant to, in which case knowledge dropper is trolling, again. Or perhaps it is serious. Certainly all too many conservatives and pro-Trump types take seriously the notion that there is a connection between “the conservative side” and patriotism which the “liberal side” lacks. It’s irritating and it’s offensive.

I think he meant was that most Trump supporters are anti-America and he wanted to make sure we understood he's not one of those.

ETA - this was a joke, FTR

Why does this bother you?

Hating Bosa is not much different from hating players who support Kaepernick. If a player says something that you find to be offensive, there's nothing wrong with putting that guy on your "do not root for" list.

Joe I have no problem telling family and friends that the Saints and football belong to me, it’s my sport and it connects me to my family, my friends and my city, and if they want to put anything between me and that they can stuff it. I take a different view, saints.  I am ok with anyone, including athletes voic9ng their opinions and taking stances in all manner of things including political or controversial subjects.  Many athletes-Bill Russel, Ali, Naritolova, Arthure Ashe, Jackie Rob8mson, Billie Jean king, hell even Lebron is stepping up- and intelligently, passionately advocate issues with real substance.  That there are lightweights, trolls and posers mixed in doesn't take away from me enjoying my game but it does allow me to know the players 9n a different level than just a jock.

It bothers me that we're at a point where liking or disliking a public figure puts someone at the top of their most hated people list.

C'mon Buddy. You're spoiling the fun. Broad brushes and self-righteousness are so fun and easy.

Bosa deleting his posts just draws more attention to his politics - it doesn't magically make them disappear or make him a Gary Johnson voter.  And as for him being a Trump fan, Brady is a Trump fan and nobody seems to care.  It only becomes an issue when they get "uppity" and kneel for the national anthem, or speak out on some perceived or real injustice.

He's just a kid, who here hasn't changed dramatically since you were 22ish?

Tons like Trump, tons think what Kaepernick did was wrong.

Sure the kid does need to realize running off at the mouth about anything isn't going to help him.  But don't look for this to do much or  go anywhere.

Hell, when I was his age I thought bluegrass music sucked,  now I know it's fantastic, yep, maturity,

I was never a huge Tebow fan, but one thing that always impressed me about him was that, while I'm sure I would strongly disagree with his views on issues like abortion and homosexuality, he never came out and made polarizing statements about those subjects. He was famous from a very young age and he had that politician's gift for staying relentlessly positive and on-message.

As for Bosa, as unfair as it may be, he's right to worry. The draft is an incredibly precarious process (just ask Laremy Tunsil) and even dropping a couple spots can cost you some serious money. From that Root article, it also sounds like he is particularly cognizant that he could end up in SF and he probably doesn't want to start his career there by antagonizing the fan base.

Seeing how Trump has something like 55% pretty steadily disapprove of him it was a good idea to delete his posts. Could I root for him if he ends up on my favorite team, yes. Would I buy a jersey with his name on it, no.

As someone that is pro-America/pro-Trump apparently like Bosa, I understand why he deleted the comments.  One overly sensitive GM or whiner fan base could cause him to drop a spot or two and cost him some money.  These are rough times
A "whiner fan base"? All fan bases are whiners. That's the nature of fandom.

Deleting your tweets/posts is, effectively, the same thing as "walking back your comment"; it's the sensible action to take if you wish to avoid controversy over a previous sharply stated opinion.

I'm a dedicated anti-Trumper, but I'd give him a pass on this without question.   Joe, your friend needs to take a step back and reevaluate.
