There's no question Colorado's march to the World Series raised the profile of shortstop Troy Tulowitzki in his rookie campaign.

Tulowitzki's presence in the playoffs, along with Arizona rookie center fielder Chris Young (until the Rockies eliminated the Diamondbacks in the National League Championship Series) may have increased attention on the talented youngsters who are vying with Milwaukee third baseman Ryan Braun for the NL Rookie of the Year Award, but ballots had to be submitted before the regular season ended.

Braun, 23, is attempting to become the Brewers' first Rookie of the Year Award winner since Pat Listach in 1992.

Braun reached 25 home runs faster than any rookie since Mark McGwire in 1987. He batted .324, slugged .634 -- surpassing the all-time rookie record slugging percentage of .621 set in 1930 by George Watkins of the St. Louis Cardinals -- while belting 34 homers and driving in 97 runs.

Tulowitzki gets the nod over Braun defensively, and the Rockies shortstop also drove in two more runs, had six more total bases and also edged Braun in hits, runs, doubles and walks. But it must be remembered that Tulowitzki had 158 more at-bats than Braun, who wasn't called up from the Minor Leagues until May 24.

Here's a look of the candidates for the 2007 NL Rookie of the Year Award, to be announced on Nov. 12, listed alphabetically:

FAVORITES

Ryan Braun, Milwaukee Brewers: Braun came up in May, and although he played in only 113 games, he finished among the leaders in home runs (34), batting average (.324), RBIs (97), runs (91), total bases (286), on base percentage (.370), slugging percentage (.634) and extra-base hits (66). It's not often a rookie is called up from the Minor Leagues to a contending team and hits so well that he is deservedly placed in the third spot in the lineup, but that's what Braun did -- on a team with NL MVP candidate Prince Fielder.

Troy Tulowitzki, Colorado Rockies: Tulowitzki has outstanding numbers (.291, 104 runs, 177 hits, 24 homers, 99 RBIs, 62 extra-base hits and 292 total bases). He also played Gold Glove caliber defense at a demanding position for a championship team. The only potential hurdle for his candidacy is that several of his numbers are lower than Braun's despite playing significantly more games.

Chris Young, Arizona Diamondbacks: Young hit 32 home runs with 64 extra-base hits and 27 stolen bases and played great defense for a contender. But batting average (.237) and strikeouts (141) are negatives.

DARK HORSES

Josh Hamilton, Cincinnati Reds: The former No. 1 Draft pick played fewer games (90) and has the fewest at-bats (298) of any of the contenders as a result of injury, but had good numbers (.292, 19 HR, 47 RBIs) and led all NL rookies in outfield assists.

Hunter Pence, Houston: Pence also came up late and went on the disabled list with a broken wrist before returning late in the season, but in 108 games, Pence put up eye-popping numbers: 57 runs, 147 hits, 17 homers, 56 extra-base hits, 69 RBIs, 246 total bases and a .322 batting average.

HONORABLE MENTION

Yunel Escobar, Braves; Mike Fontenot, Cubs; Norris Hopper, Reds; Kevin Kouzmanoff, Padres; Tim Lincecum, Giants; James Loney, Dodgers; Peter Moylan, Braves; Mark Reynolds, Diamondbacks; Carlos Ruiz, Phillies.

MILWAUKEE -- In the end, the astounding things Ryan Braun did at the plate trumped whatever things he didn't do in the field.

The Brewers' third baseman won the 2007 Jackie Robinson National League Rookie of the Year Award on Monday from the Baseball Writers Association of America. Braun edged Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki to become Milwaukee's first rookie of the year since shortstop Pat Listash won the American League honor in 1992.

Braun was listed first on 17 of 32 ballots, second on 14 and third on one for 128 points, based on the 5-3-1 tabulation system. Tulowitzki was first on 15 ballots and second on the other 17 for 126 points. The two-point differential was the closest in the NL since the current system was adopted in 1980.

Braun's offensive numbers made a compelling case. He batted .324 and led NL rookies with 34 home runs and a .634 slugging percentage, breaking the Major League rookie record set by Mark McGwire, who slugged .618 for Oakland in 1987. Braun drove in 97 runs and stole 15 bases.

He ranked in the top four among NL rookies in average, slugging percentage, extra-base hits, RBIs, runs, total bases, triples, multi-hit games, hits, batting average, stolen bases and on-base percentage.

Imagine if he had played all season.

Braun didn't make his big league debut until May 25, when he was promoted from Triple-A Nashville to spark a Brewers offense that was slumping on a West Coast road trip. Braun played in 113 games and made 112 starts at third base.

And there lies the knock against him. A converted shortstop playing just his second full season at third, Braun committed 26 errors, tying the Twins' Jason Bartlett for most in the Majors. Braun's .895 fielding percentage ranked last among regular Major League defenders, and he was the only player under .900.

Tulowitzki, the Rockies' shortstop, proved a superior defender in 2007. His .987 fielding percentage and 5.39 zone rating led Major League shortstops, and Tulowitzki committed only 11 errors in 155 games.

Tulowitzki was the Rockies' Opening Day shortstop and finished with two more RBIs than Braun (99 to 97), seven more doubles (33 to 26) and 28 more runs (119 to 91), but Braun led in other categories. Tulowitzki finished with a .291 average, 24 home runs and seven steals.

But Tulowitzki's team fared better. The Rockies finished the regular season on a tear, winning 14 of their final 15 regular-season games and then seven straight in the postseason to reach the World Series, where they were swept by Boston. Braun's Brewers led the NL Central for much of the season, but faded in July and August and had to settle for a second-place finish behind the Cubs.

So BBWAA voters were left debating how to weigh offense, defense and team success when casting their vote.

Other organizations had already chosen Braun. He was named the league's top rookie by both Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus, then won a Player's Choice Award as the top NL rookie. But balloting for that award, which was selected by fellow big leaguers, took place in mid-September, before the Rockies began their surge.

Even before awards season started, Braun viewed his own season as a resounding success.

"I've had to learn about failure and the typical ups and downs of a season," Braun said on the final day of the season. "From a team perspective we didn't accomplish what we wanted to, and that's getting to the postseason. But we finished with a winning season for the first time in 15 years, and that's a good thing. Personally, it was fun."

Confidence has never been in short supply for Braun, who at times caught himself showboating after connecting on a home run. First baseman Prince Fielder, a candidate for the NL MVP Award whose rookie home run and RBI records Braun broke in 2007, helped keep the rookie in check.

"Offensively, I've done well," Braun said. "Defensively, I just need to work harder. I have to make my defense as good as my offense. I have to be consistent. I feel like for two weeks I'll be great, and then I'll find a way to be terrible for two games. It's just a process, and the more experience I have, the better I'll be.

"But overall, as far as this being my first experience in the big leagues, it was awesome. I really feel like I learned a lot this year."

I think TT should have won it. Awesome defensive year and solid offensive numbers at short. Braun obviously is an unbelievable hitter, but was their a wore defensive 3rd baseman last year?

Let's hope this turns out better than the last Brewer to win the Rookie of the Year -- Pat Listasch. Runner up that year? Kenny Lofton.

No, there wasn't. He is an awful defensive 3rd baseman. Awful.

Guess they should just say this is a batting award. Because the better overall baseball player did not win the award.

Guess there is a lot of ANTI Rockies out there. No Gold Glove no Rookie of the year and I have a feeling no MVP.

Are you kidding me?? Braun hit the ball on the road as well as at home. Braun has not even played 3B for 3 years and he made some amazing plays along with his errors.TT hit .326 15 HR 60rbis at home and .256 9HR 39 rbis on the road, can you say Coors effect?? Braun beat him in many hitting stats for the season and was second in more with less games played. Brauns errors were made up by his production at the plate.Better rookie/baseball player won the award.

He had a fantastic year at the plate. However, he was possibly the worst fielder in all of MLB. Worse than Jermaine Dye or Manny Ramirez, even Derek Jeter.

Disagree, Braun is capable of making fantastic plays in the field, its his throwing errors that get him in trouble. It is not the screaming line drives at third base that give him trouble, its the easy plays where he throws the ball over Fielder's head that give him the bad rap. Anyone that says he is the worst defensive player in baseball obviously is just looking at the numbers without watching the kid play.

Not the best measure of defense, for sure...but his range factor is the lowest of any 3B, as well as his zone rating...You're right, I dont know much about his errors, but he had 26 of them, in only 248 chances (also the lowest, by far of any 3B)

Strongly disagree. The best hitter got the award. Braun was abyssmal in the field. If he is average, he should have won in a landslide. He was far, far below average.

Yes we are not saying that Braun was not the better hitter. Like I said they should just say NL Rookie of the year for Batting. Because in every other factor of the game Tolu would of won. And if you believe that Braun is good in the field then you do not know baseball at all.

the argument isn't whether Braun is a good fielder. it's whether his advantage (over the other rookie candidates) at the plate was enough to offset his defensive deficiences. by most measures, it was.
