No defense or kicker strategy (1 Viewer)

I've been hearing in podcasts not too waste a draft pick on defense or kicker.

But if you have to start a DST and K why not draft one instead of picking through the left overs. Sure I may end up streaming but isn't it smarter to start with as good as you can get?

What do you think?

It all depends on how your league works.  Sometimes it could be beneficial to take extra RB/WR spots to see how camp battles shake out and then maybe you get an advantage to being able to keep an upside guy that now has a job.  However, if you lose a priority because you take a kicker and/or defense on the waiver wire then it probably isn't worth doing this.

One year I made a late trade and exited the draft without a kicker (traded my last pick which is where I always take my kicker).   In that league waivers are once a week with no way to claim a guy late in the week.  I forgot I needed a kicker and didn't claim one.  I won that first week.  I did the same think for week 2.....and won that week as well.  I was tempted to not even get a kicker since I was winning but eventually did.

can stream defense easily....to get a "good" kicker you'd have to draft one 3-4 rounds before the end of the draft... not something i'm in favor of... so why not load up on positional players and then wait until week of season to see how roster battles shake out?

This.  It depends on when you draft.  If I'm drafting before/during the preseason, I do not draft a kicker.  Too many injuries can happen, handcuffs emerge, etc.  Wait till right before week 1 before dropping and adding a K.   If you're drafting the day before the first Week 1 game then sure, draft one.

@dsutphin65 Don't be that guy who reaches for Gostkowski or Tucker 5 rounds before everyone else.  At the end of last season Tucker was the #2 K in total points, and Gostkowski was #10.  The difference between them was 22 pts.   Thats 1.3 pts per game difference.   A kicker is a kicker, just get one that either kicks in a dome, or in good weather, or whose offense stalls a lot, or whose offense scores a lot, or whose defense creates a lot of turnovers, or whose team mascot is a bird, or a cat......It doesn't matter, just get one before gametime.
