No effect from nitrous at dentist? (1 Viewer)

I've had a lot of dental work done over the years, always with just the needles to numb everything up.

I went yesterday to a new dentist to have a crown replaced and they asked if I would want nitrous oxide. I was a little hesitant at first but decided to try it. The assistant started with oxygen and slowly introduced the nitrous. She told me to say if I was feeling dizzy or nauseous. After a couple of minutes, nothing. She turned it up and still nothing. When the dentist came in, she put it up higher saying some people are more resistant. Still nothing even when she supposedly maxed it out. I went though with the procedure and never felt anything.

I'm not really nervous at the dentist as long as I'm numbed up. If I was already calm, would that explain not having any effect on me? Should I have definitely felt something different?

It's possible there was an issue with the setup.  Depending on how high their "max" is, you should have experienced some effects.  It may have been just feeling a little tingly or woozy and just generally feeling relaxed.  It's not going to put you to sleep though, especially at the amounts used at a dentist's office.

In the end, if the procedure went well, it's all good  :)

When she walks out of the room you're supposed to cup it hard over you nose and mouth and breath deep in and out as fast as you can.   Anyway, that's what I usually do to make sure it works.

Yeah, when I went in I thought that it puts you out so I wasn't going to do it. Once she told me it just relaxes you, I went for it. I guess there was a moment where my arm felt a little tingly but sometimes I tighten up a little without realizing it and when I do realize it, I relax and can feel a little tingle. But I think that always happened in the past..

They even seemed a bit perplexed at the lack of reaction from me.

I was doing it in front of the assistant.  :D  She didn't seem to care.

True story. They gave me nitrous at the dentist once. Pulled a tooth that needed pulling (an adult molar). Then, even though they'd given me the gas, they didn't give me pain medication for the after effect because they knew I'd done heroin. Most painful twenty-four hours I can remember other than shoulder surgery.

So I went back the next day and got pain meds, with the main doctor lecturing the other student doctors.

That's neither here nor there, though. Nitrous rules! They all had a tank outside the Modest Mouse show in Wallingford, CT in 2010. Fun times.

When I was in high school a buddy of mine was really big into nitrous oxide. He bought a whole bunch of canisters to a party once and had everyone doing it. My friend big Joe, who weighed about 350 pounds, did a shot of it in the front yard, looked at me and smiled, and then fell flat on his face. I thought the dude was dead.

Ive never had nitrous.    Always the shots.  And since it seemed to always work well, I'm fine with continuing with that

Yeah, since it didn't really do anything I won't be doing it again. This was the first time with a new dentist after going to one that I really trusted for over 20 years, so I thought I'd try it.

nahhhhh ... gotta do something like 1 for $15, 2 for $25 - make them chase the bargain.

Supposedly it's all controlled by a single monopoly now.  I'm not an avid user, but I hear "no deals" being barked at shows all the time now when I'm passing a tank line.  The interactions I see between buyer/sellers always seems aggressive and amped up lately.

Interesting article.

It sounds like this Nitrous Mafia has really become a problem wherever they travel. The buyers don't sound good either littering the ground all up with empty balloons. I hope all of that doesn't ruin things for other vendors who are generally peaceful people just selling their goods, and being a part of the music scene. One of my favorite things, especially in the 80s, at Grateful Dead shows was checking out all of the stuff on Shakedown Street before the show. I still have a batik t-shirt I bought from a vendor many years ago.

Sure, just get some Reddi Whip. Lol
One of my roommates in college got fired from a restaurant for opening up all of the cans of Reddi Whip to suck out the nitrous. She used to drive almost an hour to a head shop to buy whippets, and she would do them while driving back.  She always carried a big purse, and there were always a variety of drugs in there. One day she was next door watching General Hospital and doing bong hits with the neighbor, and her parents showed up. Me and another roommate were home at the time, and I went out the back door to the neighbors to tell her that her parents were there. Evidentially, she had stole some valium from her mom when she had gone home for a weekend to see a friend, and her parents were concerned about her drug use and her grades, so they told her she had to leave and move back home. It was a bad scene at the time, but she got through it all.

She did them while driving?!?

I only did them a few times in my late teens but I remember being out of my mind for a good 30 seconds at least.

She said she did. I wasn't with her, but some of the whippets she had bought had been used when she got back, and we questioned her about it. So, I only know what she said. She was crazy enough to do it. She drove one of those boxy Volvo station wagons, and one time I was talking to neighbors outside in the parking lot while I was painting my bike, and she got into her car to go somewhere. I wasn't paying attention to what she was doing, but I heard her car door shut, and turned around to see her drive off, and she drove up into the grass some, and the left side of her car drove off a stone wall that started up from the grass at an angle, and then the car made this awful crushing sound, and she kept on going. Everyone watching was in shock. One of the neighbors ran after her car, but she didn't stop. Thankfully she didn't hurt anyone on the road that day going to wherever she went.

We used to have a friend named Jerry that would bring whippets to parties and would clank around the party with Redi-Whip cans clanging together.

He died in his thirties. He'd become a doctor and was able to dispense prescriptions. We always surmised that his heart attack at the age of like thirty-five or so was due to something nefarious.

That's my whippet story. I, like you, remember the empty bottles and that sound they made. Except instead of in a college, party vibe, he would bring them to parties in New York City among graduates and stuff. It was all rather odd, and I started to worry about him even in my worst days when I shouldn't have been worried about anyone.

Phish and Dead and Co. shows still have very large vendor areas.  But yes, people leave these balloons everywhere, it's disgusting.
