"No Mercy" Great White Shark draft underway! (1 Viewer)

purplehaze67

Footballguy
For those that may not be aware, No Mercy is a collection of 6 12-team redraft leagues that began in 2001. It's a tiered system where the most successful owners move up, and the less successful ones move down.

The top league is Great White Shark and this is where the best of the best play. The draft is underway, and I thought it'd be helpful to post the results as they happen. I hope it gives an idea of how other 'sharks' (including FBGs own Maurile Tremblay) value players, and if you'd like to offer your opinion, please feel free.

Looks pretty good so far. I'm a little suprised Tiki and S. Davis went as high as they did. What the hell do I know tho, I'm trying to get in the league as a "Maggot" ;)

Looks exactly like the Pyramid leagues I'm in (scoring system, etc.).

Of course, Zaphod started that 3 years ago...

Isn't it a bit early to hold drafts for redraft leagues?

I can see your problem with S Davis but where should D Davis have gone? I like the Davis/Moss combo myself - what would you have done? BTW - not my team!

I like Faulk and Henry more. DD is too risky to be a first rounder IMO.
I dont have a problem with those picks. Nothing wrong with going with your gut and being aggressive. I dont win alot of leagues "playing it safe".Alot of different combo's picking 12th that he could've gone, hopefully it pays off for him.

I don't like the D. Davis pick either. Picking at 1.12, you get two in a row. If I know one of those picks will be Moss, I think my other one should be the safest remaining tier RB2. I like Faulk or Henry over Davis. Sure all of them have risk, Faulk spent some time injure last year and Henry has McGahee looking over his should. But Davis was injured for a short time last year too, he's on a much worse team, and there's the slight chance Hollings could get some time. I would have gone Faulk and Moss. At least with Faulk you know he's got a team that will give him plenty of opportunity to score. Yes, there's the injury concern but you could probably grab one or both of the Rams backups and get decent production. Another thing about picking Moss here, he's got the nagging foot injury. That didn't hurt him last year, but you never know. Taking Faulk and Moss is kind of a boom or bust. If one of them goes down you probably won't win any money. If both go down, you'll be even worse, but if both Faulk and Moss play in top form, there's no way you can lose!!!Another option would be to go both Moss and Harrison. Then grab RBs with your next three picks and hope one breaks into the top 15. You would have to take a WR3 until pick 6 or 7 which might lead to some value.

2004 marks the fourth year of No Mercy, so I'm not sure which league initiated the scoring system first, or if anyone really copied from another. No Mercy has always drafted early - since the A league has to start before the B league, which has to start before the C league, etc (to be sure no one drops out and needs to be replaced from a lower league) and we have to contend with vacation schedules of 72 owners - an early start for the A league is the only way the F league is going to finish on time.

Hmmmm. I felt a little shaky about taking Henry at 2.06 - primarily due to the McGahee situation, especially later in the year - but didn't have the guts to pull the trigger on another option. Good to see my 'risky' pick was actually somewhat of a steal!

Agreed. I'd be ecstatic to start my draft with Green/Culpepper/Owens. All three are legit candidates to lead the league in FF points at their respective positions. Furthermore with holes still to fill at RB and WR, in the next several rounds RA can jump on value at whatever position it emerges.

As the season approaches, we want to keep these type of threads out of the Shark Pool. Although, Survivor Staff vs. MB is the exception.

Personally I think it's lame this can't be in the shark pool at this juncture. It creates good discussion... a heck of a lot better than some of the topics that are up there now like:"What's your favorite Fantasy Football team name" and"David Boston " Purple contacts""Seriously, are we here to discuss advanced fantasy football strategy or what?I understand wanting to limit every person on the MB from posting their results, but we're a ways out from being flooded with them. My two cents.

Yeah, I wouldn't post some random Xpertleagues or Yahoo! draft here, but I figured there was some value in the results of the top-tier No Mercy draft - both to generate discussion (especially in later rounds) and as a guide to where experienced owners might value certain players. Sorry for contributing to the clutter. Won't happen again.

Barlow and Taylor are looking like end of the first round steals. I'm partial to both (bias admitted) but in a pt per reception league I'd rather have either than Williams or Lewis.Again, just my opinion.

This is a tough one. I agree that there can be a lot of good discussion regarding drafts, at the same time, a dozen threads similar to this will show up in the next several weeks with only the rosters and "Who had the best draft?"As Rob said in a PM to me, he wouldn't post a random mock draft from Xpertsleagues, but to those not involved in No Mercy, it is the same thing.Rob,Get the Great White owners into this thread and give commentary on these picks and we can put it back in the Shark Pool.

I think this is very good info. With 72 FBGs (96?) in No Mercy, this is important to at least all of them and pretty much anyone who wants to watch real sharks draft. It's not like your posting the Piranha league draft, this is Great White. ;)

No need for anybody fighting for a bait bucket spot, I will be taking that level this year. It's a good thing the Great White Fellas have to wait a couple of years for me to work my way up....how many of those jokers started at/near the top anyhow?

Some of the WRs are going a bit earlier than I would have expected. Chad Johnson in the second -- not a bad pick, but earlier than I've seen in other drafts. Same with Derrick Mason in the third.Curtis Martin was someone I was targeting at 3.08. Hated to see him go at 3.05. There's one more RB I like. I'll either take him or someone else. (Does that give away too much?)

For the first year, all leagues were considered equal, despite the names. For year two, the top two teams from each league went into GWS, teams 3 and 4 were Hammerhead, etc. No one started any better or worse off then anoyone else in that regard.

I was hoping he'd fall to me at 3.10 but knew that would be too good to be true.

I'm the owner of Vatican City Lutherans. I really don't know why or how I chose that team name but I have kept it for 4 years now.

My draft so far has gone,

1.10 Fred Taylor

2.03 Marshall Faulk

With my first round pick I was looking mainly at Fred Taylor or Kevan Barlow, and also hoping that maybe Edgerrin James or Ricky Williams would fall but they didn't. Moss entered my mind but I have drafted with most of these guys before and knew that it would be RB crazy so I felt RB was the only way to go. I felt Taylor was a bit more safe of a pick than Barlow and if he can get back to the double digit TD's he could be top 5. I really think these two will end the year real close in yards, both rushing and receiving, and should be with-in a TD or two of each other. Right now I don't think I could have gone wrong with either and I for one believe Barlow is definitely worth a 1st round pick near the #10 overall range. Jax is a sleeper pick team of mine this year and if they do as well as I think they can, it will be Fred Taylor leading them.

In the second round my main goal was value. I didn't care if it was a RB or WR, I wouldn't have taken a QB though, so my list was pretty simple. Barlow, Moss, Faulk, Harrison, Dom. Davis. Barlow went at 1.11, and Moss and Dom at the turn, then Harrison. I really would have been happy with any of them but loved having Faulk (my #13 overall player) fall to me at #15. I do understand that he has plenty of risk. He hasn't played a full season since 1999 and hasn't rushed for 1000 yards since 2002, but if any 2nd round player could end up being top 5, I'd say it's him. 14 games is all he needed in 2000, and 2001 to be the #1 RB and he may be 31 now, but the way he played in the last 8 games of 2003, he sure didn't look like a 30 year old back. If he can keep that up, I'll be thrilled. Even if I just get 10 solid games from him, I'd also be happy. His points per game were right up there at the end of 2003.

In the 3rd I'm looking to take Marcell Shipp. I don't buy that Emmitt Smith crap *wink ;) wink*. No, not really, I do have a short list of guys I like, but we'll have to see when it come time to pick.

I own Relentless Assault. Thanks for the  so far.In No Mercy, we roll a 1000 sided dice and then we choose our draft spots starting at the highest roll and working down. I rolled the 11th best and berated the other owners into giving me the 3rd pick. My reasons will remain my own until the draft completes.LT and Priest were obvious picks at the top. I think some of the other owners avoided 3rd to save from having to make the tough choice here. I picked Ahman because he was sooooo studly last year and I get the bonus homer pick too. GB returns all 11 starters so the chemistry from last year is retained. Even if Ahman slips a bit I don't think the pick will lose me anything. My 2nd round choice was a little tougher. Ahman was the 1st RB I'd ever drafted in round 1 of No Mercy and it felt pretty good to have some security at that position. I had done well going WR-QB and WR-WR in the 1st 2 rounds in previous years because that's where the value was. At 2.10 the top backs were gone and the top 3 WR's were gone too so I figured I'd go where the value was. At QB, Culpepper and P. Manning are a tossup. I had Manning last year and probably should have stuck with him but I have a superstition where I generally avoid players I owned last year because, if they performed well, I tend to see them thru rose colored glasses. So I took Culpepper. In Round 2 I took Culpepper hoping the player I wanted would last thru 2 owners and 4 picks and he did. I thought that if anyone could break into the Top 2 or 3 WR stratosphere it was Terrel Owens. I think he is can't lose pick valuewise at this spot with potential to take it up to Moss/Harrison levels. He's a much better target than McNabb has ever had with his size and speed. 100+ catches is not out of the question.

I like Faulk and Henry more. DD is too risky to be a first rounder IMO.
Hucks, you have to consider the big picture though, especially drafting at the turn. You're doomed if you don't come out of the first 2 picks w/o a RB. In this league (if you ever make it this high), you have to be very careful about drafting someone like Faulk. He misses a few games and you don't have his backup, you're toast. Faulk, Rudi, Dillon, Henry or Davis - all have issues. Davis looks like the safesy bet.

Actually, in the initial year we had the 1st and 2nd in each league go into GW, then 3 and 4 into Hammerhead, etc. Only way to have been in GW from the beginning is to keep winning.

Not necessarily. I drafted at 1.12 last year and took Harrison and Owens. 11 backs were gone. You don't get value with the 12th rated back at 1.12.
In this league (if you ever make it this high), you have to be very careful about drafting someone like Faulk. He misses a few games and you don't have his backup, you're toast. Faulk, Rudi, Dillon, Henry or Davis - all have issues. Davis looks like the safest bet.
I liked the Davis pick, he was the sexiest back available. Hopefully they don't abuse him so much in the 1st half of the season so he doesn't fade in the 2nd.

At 3.10, Vatican City Lutherans, took Laveranues Coles.

I again went with the player I felt had the most value. I didn't have any certain position in mind and was happy to see the 4 RB's go then Gonzo since Coles was the top on my list since Terrell Owens was picked at 3.03. Gonzo was next and a close 2nd so I am glad I didn't have to decide between the two. The guys I want just keep falling to me and my short list of 5 players for my next pick is looking good as well.

Coles might not be my ideal #1 WR, don't get me wrong I'm thrilled to get him at that spot, but I was babied last year with having Harrison and Holt. I should be able to team him up with a nice #2 with my next pick or with either my 5th or 6th round picks. There is a ton of good WR talent available but I felt Coles was one of the last WR's at that 2nd tier after the studs. I do like his situation, and his ability to make plays, so I see no reason why he cannot get close to 1200 yards and 8 TD's. I'm really excited to see this Washington offense play and with their fire-power they should be near the top of the league in total offense.

Powellsville Monkey Spankers:1.9 RiwiI really wanted Edge here but Riwi is ok too. He will get all the carries and I think he will bounce back from a tough year to post top 6 numbers.2.4 RudiI really wanted Faulk here and tried unsuccessfully to trade up. Rudi is a homer pick for me but I also expect him to have a very good year. So far, between my 2 picks, I expect at least 700 carries.3.9 GonzoI am happy to get him here. I was gonna trade up to get him but another rb craze started and I got him anyway. I was not enamored with the wr's here so why not take the best TE. Coles was a consideration but i am just not sure of the washington situation. Barring injury, Gonzo was the safest pick. This is not a flashy team and I have missed out on some guys I wanted by a pick or two so far, but I am not unhappy with this start. These guys are all solid and I don't feel that they have alot of question marks.

1.5 Portis: This is the guy I wanted here as I have as the no3 overall player. I expect big things from him in DC this year.2.8 Barber: I think he will get pass the fumbling and TDs will pick up again after being horrid last year. I was hoping for Dillon here but Barber will do.3.5 C Martin: I dreamed that Bennett might fall here but was actually very happy to get Martin. Now I guess I need something besides RBs.

Yeah, Jersey Jugheads are putting themselves out of contention very quickly.Davis in 2nd and Mason in 3rd :wall:
The Jersey Jughead is here. You are not really buying the 50/50 split are you?I agree that Foster will take the job soon but not this year and even if they do split 60/40, Davis will still get the goaline carries. I could be wrong but I thought he was the best back still available. Coaches like Fox that beleive in the power run philosophy do not play the commitee approach. I guess time will tell. And as far as Mason is concerned. I think he can exceed last years stats and approach 10 TDs. The Titans, believe it or not are becoming a passing team and McNair is just now coming into his own as a passing QB. Mason is the hands down #1. And again, he IMO was the safest pick at that spot.

Well Chad Johnson might of been a bit of a reach but one of my great weakness last year was lack of a clear no 1 reciever. Maybe I am letting past experience colour my actions to much but we will see I guess.I debated between him and Owens. I think CJ's best seasons are ahead of him while I think Owens already had his.CheersInsurrection

I'll try to keep this updated with running commentary every 3-4 picks or so.

Detroit Breakdowns

1.07 RB James, Ind

When I chose the 7 hole, I did so with the assumption that I'd be taking James. With the uncertainty surrounding Lewis (legal problems and a possible regression from 2003) and Williams (Mia offense as a whole) - James was the last RB I'd be comfortable as my #1 at this time.

While I don't think he will ever post pre-injury type stats, I look for an improvement over last year. All the pieces are in place and barring health issues, there is no reason to expect any less. Not a pick that shocks the world or anything, but good solid value here.

2.06 RB Henry, Buf

Despite the heavy emphasis on RB in No Mercy, I was ready to go WR here, but Maurile snaked my guy away (Holt) from me one pick before. Henry is a nice consolation prize, despite some worries about McGahee stealing touches. But, all RB on the board had equally serious questions, and no way was I going WR with the big three off the board, and it was too early for me to consider QB.

Some of the commentary indicated that Henry was a better selection then a few of the RB that want 1.11 and after. Getting him at 2.06 is pretty nice value, and I like the way this team is shaping up so far.

3.07 RB Staley, Pit

Yep, another RB. If Coles and Gonzo didn't already have health issues, I would have gone a different way here. This draft is taking place too early in the year for me to take on that kind of risk, so I needed to go in another direction. There were a few RB on the board that I felt were pretty much equal, including TJones.

To be honest, I'm not sure exactly what made me rank Staley above the others. A classic 'gut feel' pick, and we will have to wait and see how it turns out. I know staley should see lots of opportunities - both on the ground and through the air - and the stats should follow. I couldn't be happier with Staley as my bye/injury fill, or maybe as trade bait down the line.

Two of those RBs that I ranked close to Staley/Jones are still on the board. I wouldn't go RB/RB/RB/RB -- or would I?? :P

4.06 QB Vick, Atl

Historically, I wait on QB - but I felt Vick holds far too much value to pass up here. Last year, the guy was going in the top of the 2nd before his injury. Early reports are that the ankle is close to 100% and that Vick is working extremely hard and adapting well to the new WCO.

The offense is set up well for a QB to succeed - a couple new WRs, a young and improving TE and a RB who is well versed at receiving out of the backfield. Vick needs to work on his accuracy, but if he can get better there and remain healthy, the sky is literally the limit. Adding his rushing stats to my already-formidible ground game is going to make me tough to beat.

I thought about going WR here, but there wasn't any one receiver that I felt stood out from the rest. I think I can get a very comparable player down the road a bit. I wasn't going add another RB, considering who was left. Although there are a few very nice TEs on the board, I saw a pretty big drop-off after the top-4 QB, so my choice here was pretty easy.

5.07 TE Shockey, NYG

If you told me before the draft that I'd be heading into the 6th round with no WR and both QB and TE I wouldn't have believed you. I almost always slack on at least one of those, but hey - the value is just too much to ignore. Yeah, there are some issues with the foot, but if you look at Bennett - who broke the screw in the summer and still ended up playing well at the end of the year. It's a risk, but a manageable one conisidering the upside potential and the relatively cheap draft position.

Paired with Vick, the Breakdowns are poised to either steamroll the competition, or crash and burn in a flaming heap. Either way, it should be a wild ride.

That's the only pick I really dont like. Their are a couple other RB's that I see havent been drafted yet that I may have went with instead over staley. But they have a little more risk/uncertainty to them so I can understand the pick. Too bad westbrook went right before you.

If you are thinking of the same RBs as I am - I agree. There is more risk there and a chance that either/or might slip to my 4th rounder. I don't think I had much chance of Duce being there for me then. I calculated risk that could have gone another way without too much effort.

I wasn't saying don't go RB, I was saying get a different RB....DD is too risky at 1.12. Henry and Faulk are much better picks IMO. To each his own.

We probably are thinking of the same RB's but I would think Duce had a better chance of slipping into the next round before the other guys.Better to swing for the fences on your #3 RB than someone like Staley who I doubt will score that many TD's with Bettis around. JMHO tho.

I don't like this pick either. I would have definitley gone RB here though.
