No more Marty Ball? (1 Viewer)

LT's production was effective because the Chargers weren't a Martyball team the last few years. The reason SD has been so potent (aside from personnel) is that Marty handed over the reigns to the far more creative and aggressive Cam Cameron.

The Chargers hoped to maintain the status quo when they promoted Clarence Shelmon to the role. Shelmon was LT's position coach the last few years and has coached RBs for 18 years in the NFL, having never been a coordinator.

I can't believe someone would even ask this. Why would you not keep giving the ball to the most bonifide stud in the league for the past 4 to 5 years?

It sucks. Marty defienetly loved that team and those players really like him too. But I guess thats just the business for ya. He's had his shots and hasn't come through. Bad luck? Some would say. He's a good man and a good coach. Sucks he didnt take them further this year. They def were the best team in the league

I don't think LT's production is gonna suffer. Whoever gets the HC job I'm sure will be at least smart enough to know what he has in LT. If anything I could possibly see his receptions going up as the new HC may want to limit his hits somewhat and his carries.

Tomlinson's production might have dropped off considerably even if Schottenheimer stayed. It almost certainly won't be as good as it was this year, and the fact that he's losing a hall of fame coach probably doesn't help that. He's still the unquestioned 1.1, but you can't just pencil him in for the kind of numbers he had in his career year.

It could. Certainly.Especially if SD takes a serious hit at winning games from an overall perspective.
Maybe, but LT produced when the team was 2-14, 14-2 or 8-8. He's just that good. One could argue that he won't come near last year's numbers, although that's to be expected given the unbelievable year he had. I think the performance of the defense will go a long way towards whether LT even comes within sniffing distance of last year's figures.

I had the number one pick this year and took Shaun Alexander because I thought the departure of Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers starting would negatively effect LT.

I will never make that mistake again. (of course I probably will never get the #1 pick again either).

LT is above having his production adjusted by any one player or any one coach.

The answer is a resounding NO.

Even if Ryan Leaf was the QB , he was running behind Oakland`s offensive line and he had the Patriots wr`s on his team L.T would still run all over the field and be a stud....period.

LT's number would take a hit with anybody. He had the all-time best fantasy season last year. His numbers have nowhere to go but down. It's just a matter of how far down will they go.

This teams needs continuity.

It depends on expectations. Whether Marty was there or not, he wasn't going to put up stats like last year. If healthy he'll still be the #1/#2 back. Whoever coach's the team will be familiar with LT and will know their best chance to win is to put it in his hands. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

Im saying LT2 sets records in a 14-2 year. He doesnt sniff them at 8-8.
Priest Holmes scored 24 TDs and had almost 2300 total yards in an 8-8 year. But I do think that almost any change for LT has to be considered a downgrade. His 2006 season was pretty much perfect from a fantasy production standpoint; there's nowhere to go but down from there. He'll still be a top RB and worth the #1 overall selection, but I expect in auction leagues people will be paying too much based on last year's production.

That would have been the case regardless of the coaching situation. At the end of the day it's not as if the Chargers had some great scheme that they came up with that is going to be difficult to replace. They handed the ball to the best RB in the game and ran left behind a blossoming rookie LT. I knew it was coming, the other team knew it was coming but they couldn't stop it. I don't see a new coach coming in and changing all that much. The Chargers have a luxury that almost no other team in the NFL has which is a wealth of top end talent on both sides of the ball that even an average coach can get production out of. From LT, Gates, Rivers, the line, etc. they've got a wealth of talented players so while they may take a little hit I doubt it will be much. The real issue in my mind will be the installation of a new system and associated growing pains in getting up to speed.

Yes, I can say w/o a doubt that LT's production should come down next year. 2006 was a career year. Just like everyone else, there should be a reduction back to the mean. Also, while LT has always had good seasons even on poor teams, he was never a landslide RB or overall #1 on anything less than a top tear team.

They also never had the line that they did this year either and there's no reason for that to fall apart.

Actually there is somewhat. It sounds like they won't be able to retain Dielman at LG, so depending on who they get to replace him, LaDainian's numbers could take a hit from that direction. If I were a LaDainian owner that's what I'd be concerned about much moreso than who the OC or HC is.
