Non-Rap Songs that Refer to the Protagonist Committing Murder (1 Viewer)

Elton John's "Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny)" is about John Lennon's murder and the aftermath. But the lyrical references are oblique -- Mark David Chapman is the "one insect" that "destroy so much grain".

It's implied very heavily that the smuggler in Glenn Frey's "Smuggler's Blues" killed someone: "... knew the gun was loaded, but didn't think it'd kill".

I was thinking about that one - good call.

"Whiskey in the Jar" - Thin Lizzy & Metallica

For about six or maybe seven in walked Captain Farrell
I jumped up, fired off my pistols and I shot him with both barrels

"Devil's Right Hand" - Steve Earle & Webb Wilder

Got into a card game in a company town
I caught a miner cheating, I shot the dog down
I shot the dog down, I watched the man fall
He never touched his holster, never had a chance to draw

Hank Williams Jr. - A Country Boy Can Survive

"But he was killed by a man with a switchblade knife...for $43 my friend lost his life"

Bonus intent to murder: "I'd love to spit some beechnut in that dude's eyes and shoot him with my old .45"

Maroon 5- Wake Up Call

"Six foot tall

Came without a warning, so I had to shoot him dead
He won't come around here anymore"

awesome song, love me some Zevon - "Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner" also fits the bill here.

didn't see "Miller's Cave" and "The Dreadful Wind And Rain" mentioned yet. Drive-By Truckers have a few good murder ballads - "Sinkhole" and "Nine Bullets" come to mind off the top of my head.

Am I misunderstanding the definition of protagonist?

These music threads always turn into a cluster#### because people just want to spit out names to songs/bands.

The Killers - Shot at the NIght!

Steely Dan - 'Do It Again'

In the mornin' you go gunnin'
For the man who stole your water
And you fire till he is done in
But they catch you at the border
And the mourners are all singin'
As they drag you by your feet
But the hangman isn't hangin'
And they put you on the street, yeah

Sting - 'Murder By Numbers'

Now if you have a taste for this experience
And you're flushed with your very first success
Then you must try a twosome or a threesome
And you'll find your conscience bothers you much less

Because murder is like anything you take to
It's a habit-forming need for more and more
You can bump off every member of your family
And anybody else you find a bore

Don't think this guy is a protagonist, but the song is moving and disturbing - Buenos Noches From a Lonely Room
I went to a wedding reception once and the singer took a break and I was loaded and thought it was my big chance. So, I hopped up on the stage, grabbed the mic, and asked the band if they knew a country song. This was the only one they knew, so I had them fire it up. After singing the first line, I realized that I didn't know any of the other words by memory. So, I dropped the mic and retreated into the crowd in shame while the band played the rest of the song as an instrumental.

Can't think of a better song to play at a wedding.
