Broncos | Nash pushing for roster spot

Thu, 24 Aug 2006 19:49:12 -0700

Pat Rooney, of the Rocky Mountain News, reports Denver Broncos RB Damien Nash is pushing for a roster spot and may claim a spot at the expense of RB Ron Dayne. Nash has been one of the surprises of training camp for the Broncos, "I've just been doing what I always do, and that is come in and push myself to compete at the highest level."

How high did Dayne get in the rankings in about May/June?

Rankings for Dayne as of 7/17 ...

Ranked: 32 Ron Dayne, DEN

41 32 23 29 32 28 37 31 40 38 38 39 38 25 26 28 20

Average: 32.3

Wow. Over the off season I traded for him in one league where I had Tatum, jettisoned them both in another.

Does he have much chance to regain value?

in perspective, next week Tatum could be the #3 back, Cobbs the #2 back, Nash the #1 RB and Mike Bell at the #4 slot

Shannahan is funny that way ........

For the past 2 seasons my fantasy teams were affected by the Minnesota RB debacle. You never knew who was going to start.

This year I hope to stay away from the Denver situation which looks to be similar.

I'm sick.

Sick and tired of this whole situation. (Denver RB) I have Bell in a huge dynasty league (zealots) I'm confident he's gonna come out on top of this non-sense... but as soon as he regains his rightful value... he's friggin gone. Actually, I"m thinking of banning the entire Denver team from any future drafting consideration.

For what it's worth... from Rotoworld via the Denver Post:

Cedric Cobbs is reportedly the favorite to be Denver's third RB.

Ron Dayne and Damien Nash may both be released. Cobbs, a former fourth-round pick by New England, has been solid in preseason action. The Broncos' No. 3 back is worth a late flier in most fantasy leagues.

This probably won't help Nash.

The funniest part is that someone posted what a reporter is speculating and then passes it off like it's actual news. I love the words "may" and "pushing". That's some real facts there. Real hard nosed reporting for ya. How is Dayne even on the team after this guy's article. Doesn't Shanny read this stuff? :P

Nash was awful in Tennessee last summer. I wanted to see Jarret Payton and oh my was that guy terrible when I got to see him play. Pretty sure there's a thread here where they say he'll make the team because they drafted him and another where Fisher says he's not doing well at all.

I'm surprised if he does anything in DEN

how do you know that Bell (Mike) will come out on top? who is he? there's no reason why Nash couldn't be in the mix soon if he stays on in place of Dayne. The job is wide open and whoever takes it wins. There's just too many horses in the race IMO. Plus they could still trade for one/sign one that's cut. I won't touch any Denver Rb this year not for their current prices.

I'm no expert when it comes to the DEN RB sitch. But, didn't Mike Bell's ascention come right around the time when Dayne was not working because of turf toe? Granted if Dayne's not healthy, he won't get any burn, but if he is, couldn't he still cut into either Bell's workload?

Did I mention that I don't draft Denver RBs ever? (Post-Terrell era, that is.)
Had I maintained this stance, I would not have won my TD heavy league last year. Denver RB's are very valuable if the price is right. To rule them out completely is a missed opportunity, IMO

This guy's opinion doen't give any credibility to Dayne being a possible cut. I guess if you feel this guy has some inside knowledge then sure. But it's pretty clear he's making an opinion on his own. He doesn't even reference any "sources" to make it seem like he has a lead on this. You then post it as though it's a factual statement and make it seem Dayne is about to be cut. So I guess if I write a story and just make up an opinion would you feel it was worthy of starting a thread? I mean I have as much knowlwdge as he does about what's happening with the Denver running game.I just think with all the threads on the Denver running backs already posted, another thread stating some guys "opinion" doesn't really seem like it helps us much. Now if he had some "insider" info to give his opinion some credibility then sure. But this guy's just blowing smoke to get paid for an article.

I did not post it as a factual statement ... you need to ease up a bit.

Nope, Bell was named the starter before the first pre-season game and that was the game Dayne was injured in.

Thanks. Not that I expect Dayne to win the job outright, but he hasn't had a chance to compete right now. By all accounts, he was looking pretty good in TC, so if the toe is good to go, couldn't he muddy the waters even further?

Update ... now the possibility of Dayne being cut has been tossed out by both the Post and the Rocky Mountain News beat writers ...

Broncos | Dayne on the bubble

Sun, 27 Aug 2006 19:22:54 -0700

Bill Williamson, of the Denver Post, reports Denver Broncos RB Ron Dayne may not make the team's final roster.

Injuries open door for Johnson, Cobbs

By Bill Williamson

Denver Post Staff Writer

Shaky health in the backfield could work to the advantage of Kyle Johnson and Cedric Cobbs on Sunday when the Broncos play the Houston Texans at Invesco Field at Mile High.

Starting fullback Cecil Sapp and former No. 1 tailback Ron Dayne likely will sit out the game because of injuries. Coach Mike Shanahan said Sapp's status will be a game-time decision because of a hamstring injury that has been bothering him for weeks.

Dayne, who has slid to No. 3 on the tailback depth chart, returned to light practice duty Wednesday after missing 12 days with turf toe, but he probably won't play until the preseason finale Thursday at Arizona.

Tailback Damien Nash, competing with Dayne and Cobbs for the No. 3 and possibly final tailback spot on the 53-man roster, also is expected to miss the game tonight because of a knee injury.

The absence of Sapp and Dayne could mean more work for Johnson and Cobbs. Johnson, the starter the past two seasons, will work with the first team Sunday and could be on the field for three quarters.

Shanahan said if Denver's first-team units are strong, they will depart after the first series in the third quarter. If not, the starters likely will play through the third quarter.

Cobbs has been excellent in the preseason and can add to his team-leading 107 yards rushing with some extra playing time. Tatum Bell likely will get some time with the first unit along with starter Mike Bell.

Cobbs will likely get his chance in the fourth quarter and can make his case for the No. 3 job with a strong outing. That result would put pressure on Dayne and Nash in the final preseason game.

I didn't draft Dayne, but I'm not sure I would be panicking too much if I did pick him up in the last few rounds of any draft..

I didn't think he had much chance of seeing the field in Denver (I expect Mike Bell to assume Mike Anderson's role of last year and Tatum Bell to assume Tatum Bell's role of last year)..

But, if Dayne is healthy and is cut by the Broncos, I imagine some NFL team in need of RB competition would jump at the chance to bring him in, and I think he'd (Dayne) have a better chance of seeing the field this year somewhere else...

This might be a perfect BUY LOW opportunity for the sharks...

Dayne will never get a better chance that he had heading into this year.If you are making your point with the newest information in mind (with Dayne unable to win the starting job and also unable to even make the team) then yeah, I agree he would have a better shot at playing somewhere else. Although, this point is pretty meaningless as any situation would be better than a situation where he is unable to make the roster.

but Mike Shanahan and the GM said in June that he would fill the Mike Anderson role?!?!?!?

how can this be?

Cobbs looked good again last night. I think it's much more likely he makes the team than Dayne at this point. And with Tatum "seemingly" relegated to change of pace back there is some opportunity there if Mike Bell falters.
