This search for a dc is really starting to annoy me. It seems that the Packers are having trouble finding spmeone willing to come in and be the dc.
Did they make an offer to anyone yet? I thought I read they made an offer to Williams, but don't recall seeing whether they offered the job to anyone else yet, and am not entirely certain about the Williams offer. I keep hearing and reading about them "losing out" on the guys they want, but I don't believe anyone with the team has confirmed that.
Does it matter if they made an offer? If they made an offer and it was turned down they lost out. If they didn't make an offer they let two highly sought out defensive coordinators walk away. Now it looks like Dom Capers may be the next candidate that they will not get as it appears he is headed to the Giants.
It makes a huge difference whether or not they made an offer, when claiming they "lost out" on someone. If they interviewed Nolan and Williams but then didn't offer them the job, then they didn't "lose out" on anything regardless of whether a few sports journalists think those guys are great. The fact is Nolan and Williams are both available because they both failed and were fired. Hunt refers to Nolan and Williams as McCarthy's "first two choices", but I think he's assuming that. And McGinn makes the very vague comment, "From every appearance, McCarthy tried to hire either Mike Nolan or the distinguished Gregg Williams as his next defensive coordinator." What the hell does that mean - "from every appearance"? I think it means, "I'm guessing".I'm concerned with some of the issues McGinn raises (of course we all know McGinn's style though), but am just wondering if anyone has reported that an offer was made and turned down for an equal or worse offer elsewhere. If coaches were turning McCarthy/Thompson down to take the same or less money elsewhere, then there would be good reason for concern with the coaching situation.
The thing is that appearances are very important. People are going to look at that. After all you can never be sure about what is going on behind closed doors, but it does appear that the Packers already lost out on 2 coaches. Regardless of what actually happened, that is what appeared to happen. You can sit here and argue all day that we will never know what really happened, but the fact remains that it appears that the Packers first two choices declined and went elsewhere. Another comment I have been hearing from some people is that they want Mccarthy to interview every possible candidate before making a decision. While that sounds great, the reality is if you don't make an offer on someone, another team will.
No, IMO it does not look like they declined GB at this point. And while I agree it does not look good that McCarthy fired all these coaches and some might not like that (the guy's McGinn mentioned...who actually said that.
Was it Nolan? Williams? or anyone GB would even care about their opinion of the situation?
And also funny that all over the place people wanted most of these guys fired...now that they have been fired, people are complaining that they were fired and that its making the job less enticing? Pretty much proving that there is nothing TT and McCArthy can do to please some people.
In addition, plenty of people blased the Nolan choice, and now that he went elsewhere, people are blasting TT for not getting him. Too freakin funny.
I wanted Williams, thought it would have been a very good hire...thought alot of him while he was here in TN. But its not the end of the world that a guy who led a bad defense last year did not get hired here.
Capers? Sure, would be nice to have him, but its not a huge knock on GB if he choses to go work for the Giants.
I think its been clear TT and McCarthy were not just going to go out and sign the first guy they interviewed. I think we are all thankfull TT did not do that with a HC like Minny seemed to.
I think its also clear they have wanted to talk to several guys that are still in the playoffs and were not going to jump up with huge offers before that.
