I am not too worried about appearances to fans. I am worried about appearances to potential candidates. It really doesn't matter why Nolan or Williams went to Denver or New Orleans. The point is that they went somewhere other than Green Bay.

This search for a dc is really starting to annoy me. It seems that the Packers are having trouble finding spmeone willing to come in and be the dc.
Why? Because Nolan and Williams went elsewhere?
Nolan and Williams going elsewhere would be a sign they are having trouble finding someone to come in. Here is a quote from Michael Hunt at JS Online....

Even if Ted Thompson rearranges the hemorrhaging front seven through free agency and the draft, McCarthy has lost a lot of credibility by the way he fired most of the defensive staff and has subsequently failed to land his first two choices to coordinate the unit. It's difficult to imagine top-shelf defensive assistants coming to Green Bay now that McCarthy has the quick-trigger rep.
This kills me. No one from the organization has come out and said who the choices were. This is all media speculation. Pathetic bashing.

I still say the guy is and always has been Sean McDermott. Now that The Eagles are done I expect it to be announced soon.

Did they make an offer to anyone yet? I thought I read they made an offer to Williams, but don't recall seeing whether they offered the job to anyone else yet, and am not entirely certain about the Williams offer. I keep hearing and reading about them "losing out" on the guys they want, but I don't believe anyone with the team has confirmed that.
Does it matter if they made an offer? If they made an offer and it was turned down they lost out. If they didn't make an offer they let two highly sought out defensive coordinators walk away. Now it looks like Dom Capers may be the next candidate that they will not get as it appears he is headed to the Giants.
It makes a huge difference whether or not they made an offer, when claiming they "lost out" on someone. If they interviewed Nolan and Williams but then didn't offer them the job, then they didn't "lose out" on anything regardless of whether a few sports journalists think those guys are great. The fact is Nolan and Williams are both available because they both failed and were fired. Hunt refers to Nolan and Williams as McCarthy's "first two choices", but I think he's assuming that. And McGinn makes the very vague comment, "From every appearance, McCarthy tried to hire either Mike Nolan or the distinguished Gregg Williams as his next defensive coordinator." What the hell does that mean - "from every appearance"? I think it means, "I'm guessing".I'm concerned with some of the issues McGinn raises (of course we all know McGinn's style though), but am just wondering if anyone has reported that an offer was made and turned down for an equal or worse offer elsewhere. If coaches were turning McCarthy/Thompson down to take the same or less money elsewhere, then there would be good reason for concern with the coaching situation.
The thing is that appearances are very important. People are going to look at that. After all you can never be sure about what is going on behind closed doors, but it does appear that the Packers already lost out on 2 coaches. Regardless of what actually happened, that is what appeared to happen. You can sit here and argue all day that we will never know what really happened, but the fact remains that it appears that the Packers first two choices declined and went elsewhere. Another comment I have been hearing from some people is that they want Mccarthy to interview every possible candidate before making a decision. While that sounds great, the reality is if you don't make an offer on someone, another team will.
No, IMO it does not look like they declined GB at this point.
How can you even write or believe that? They were both to be reported to be highly sought after by the Packers and there are reports both received offers. That sure seems like they delined GB. Spin away, sho.
Please link to where the Packers said this.TIA

None of this is going to matter if the guy they do get is any good. Sometimes not getting your first choice turns out to be a win (the same goes for players... and, hey, lots of things in life).
Good point. I believe Holmgren was the second and maybe even the third choice.

Maybe they weren't wanted in Green Bay.Once again, please link to where someone in the Packers organization with any credibility came out and said these were the guys they wanted.

If the report a week ago that the Packers liked McDermott most is true, than the fact that they let these others guys take jobs elsewhere shouldn't be a big concern. To me it sounds as though the only way they'd hire someone before having a chance to talk to McDermott was if one of these previous interviewees blew them away.To me there's no reason to be all that concerned right now. If they can't secure an interview with McDermott, wind up not being impressed by him, or if they are unable to close the deal after interviewing him, then I'll be worried.

Let's not forget that when McCarthy was hired, it was reported by many of the local media that Childress was the Packers choice and Minnesota stole him from the Packers.

I'm sure this was posted somewhere earlier in the thread but back on January 10th Adam Shefter from the NFL network posted on his blog that McDermott was a leading cnadidate.

Another Eagles assistant could fly to a bigger job

Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter | Tags: Adam Schefter, Green Bay Packers, Philadelphia Eagles

Before he became the Ravens’ head coach, John Harbaugh was the Eagles’ defensive backs and special teams coach.

Now the Eagles’ secondary coach, Sean McDermott, is a leading candidate to become the Packers’ next defensive coordinator.

Green Bay already has interviewed former 49ers head coach Mike Nolan and former Bills head coach Gregg Williams for its vacant defensive coordinator job. Yet the man the Packers might wind up with is coaching today against the Giants.

McDermott is a logical choice. Few staffs have produced the quality of coaches that Philadelphia’s has. Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who’s interviewing for head-coaching jobs, is a former Eagles linebackers coach.

Harbaugh was with the Eagles just last season. And now McDermott could be the next Eagles assistant to move on to bigger and better things.

So you are going to ignore everthing that was been written by multiple sources and media outlets that Nolan and Williams were high up on the Packers list of potential DCs.

:goodposting: There are sources that state both Nolan and Williams were offered the job not to mention the interviews they had. If Williams and Nolan were not wanted why were they sought after by the Packers?Do you really think at this point anyone in the Packer organization would admit that they made an offer after they took positions with other teams? I thought you were smarter than that.

Packers reach agreement with Capers

probably will employ a hybrid 3/4 - 4/3 defense.
I really like this idea and that was supposedly what Nolan brought to the table. I like this hire better however.I was hoping McDermott would get an interview, but his services are likely to be highly sought after. Plus, he's probably looking for a staff with a fresh start rather than this situation. With a lot of the vacancies already filled, I could also see him staying put for another year.

Time to look at other off season news now as well. Will Jolly get convicted or take a deal that will jeopardize his future? Will Harrel rehab and show something? How is rehab going on Barnett? Does Capers come with an agreement that he will get something to work with from free agency, or will he have input on the first draft choice? What about extending Jennings, working with Driver and Collins on their contracts? What's up with the backs? Clifton and Tauscher, we need a plan there.

Lots of talent on this team and lots of questions. As a fan I'm excited. This team can be relevant again very quickly, but will they?

Because that is likely to happen. "Hey everyone, we tried to sign two different guys, but guess what they didn't want to be here, so....." No team would ever admit that. Point is that is what appears to have taken place, and it is going to weigh in on other candidates decisions.

Packers reach agreement with Capers

By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel

Jan. 18, 2009 10:20 p.m.

Pittsburgh -- Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy's new defensive coordinator will be Dom Capers.

A source familiar with the search process said Sunday night that McCarthy and Capers had reached an agreement on a new deal that would bring the longtime defensive coordinator and former head coach to Green Bay.

Capers made himself known with a 3-4 defense, but he has worked with other defenses as well and probably will employ a hybrid 3/4 - 4/3 defense. This past season, Capers was a special assistant with the New England Patriots, coaching mostly in the secondary.

Capers was the fourth of four prominent defensive coaches to interview with McCarthy. He visited Friday night and Saturday with McCarthy and then agreed to a new deal Sunday night.

Terms of the agreement are not known.

Wow! this seems to be a great move! Glad to hear about this. Now if TT will go against his trend and sign a few free agents, maybe, just maybe we can contend next year!

Alot of people were saying that we don't have any players on the current roster that fit in the 3-4, but there are plenty. For starters, Cullen jenkins and Aaron Kampman can both play D End in a 3-4. I am a little leery of Kampman because he really has transformed his body since his Iowa days, but he has a history playing D Tackle. We do need a nose guy.At linebacker, Brady Poppinga fits in as an OLB.

I am really excited about the Capers hire. Excellent defensive mind.

Id say some people may know why they went there more than fans...and that the appearance to us may not be the same as to other coaches as far as them taking other jobs.

There are possible offers...but nothing confirmedat least for Williams. There are reports...but no confirmation from either guy or the team that they received offers. No spin needed, Im leaving that to you as usual. And Im glad Nolan was not the guy.
There are sources close to each that they received offers. They are closer to the situation then you are. You can be in denial all you want that they didn't receive an offer from the Packers. That is how you operate.
Yawn..meanwhile Capers took the job so the last day of the usual TT bashing was pretty much for nothing.

Exactly...I have always liked Johnson's defenses in Philly and wanted to see McDermott given a shot. Also thought Capers was destined for NY with his ties to Coughlin.

Read JSonline's comparisons of Capers vs. Haslet...capers has some great credentials and hopefully he can make it work here.

I really wanted McDermott too, but it sounded like Philly wasn't going to let him interview with us as he still has a year left under his contract. JSonline made it sound like McDermott was being held onto to be the heir apparent for when Johnson retires as D Coordinator for Philly.I'm extremely happy with the Caper hire when looking at the alternative (Haslett). Hopefully Capers doesn't stick to the 4-3 and will incorporate a little 3-4 in our defense. I think it will be extremely tough to completely switch our D to a primarily 3-4 D... but it'd be nice to see the 3-4 used here and there next season.

That was a risk with waiting for McDermott if Philly did not want to let him go.Williams going to NO hurt, plus with Schwartz going to Detroit that hurt GB's chances at a guy like McGinnis from the Titans.

I like Capers and think its better than some of the alternatives that have brought up.

Now lets see if he can convince TT to go get some people.

This should also shape up the draft differently as different types of guys will be better fits for his defense.

Some interesting times coming up.

I doubt we'll ever know if Capers was their first, second, third choice or an afterthought panic hire, but I have to believe there wa a way to know McDermott's availability before yesterday. I'm sure there are channels of communication by which the team could learn if Reid was willing to make McDermott available to move to a DC role and, if so, whether McDermott was interested in Green Bay. In any event, the timing of the announcement makes it clear that either the Packers didn't want McDermott or he was not available for them to interview.

i woulda liked McDermott toostrange in that not once did i read, either here or on any of the professional news sites that McDermott is still under contract with the Eagles and Reid would not allow him to interview for a position with another team.... not until this morning after the Capers hiring.

:pics: See, I can agree with you every now and the Sho  Of all the names that were mentioned, I did like Capers the best. I really hope that TT breaks out of his mold this year and signs some free agents.

Packers officially going to the 3-4 scheme on defense.

McCarthy on Capers, new 3-4 defense

By Lori Nickel of the Journal Sentinel

Jan. 19, 2009 1:06 p.m.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke to the media in Lambeau Field to introduce new defensive coordinator Dom Capers. His arrival will also infuse a scheme change from the old 4-3 to the 3-4 defense.

This is an the updated version of highlights from McCarthy:

It was difficult to let three-year defensive coordinator Bob Sanders and the other coaches go, on a personal note. "Really, what it came down to, I just didn't feel that we were headed in the right direction on the defensive side of the ball. It was really an evaluation of the last three years. I felt that a number of things that occurred in Year 1 showed up again in Year 3. Those were some of the factors that put me in that decision."

While he was still open to the 4-3 defense, he wanted to go after the 3-4. That led him to Capers, a coach he'd never worked with before.

Capers is an excellent fit, said McCarthy. He brings credibility, lots of experience. When he gets here -- should be this week -- he and McCarthy will move forward this week on filling out the rest of the defensive staff. McCarthy was not in a hurry to lock up Capers before the New York Giants could woo him. The Packers have a lot to offer Capers, too. "His vision of playing defense and my vision of how we're going to go forward in Green Bay, I'm going to say I think is why he is an outstanding fit for our organization."

The Packers are looking now at a 3-4 defense with Capers, a system McCarthy prefers. "Our starting point will be the 3-4. I'm a big believer in the 3-4 defense for a number of reasons. From an offensive standpoint it creates targeting problems. It gives you an ability to utilize your personnel. That doesn't mean we won't line up (ever) in a four man front. We'll move in and out of both four man and three man fronts." It's an excellent run defense, it creates pass rush on the quarterback.

Ends Aaron Kampman and Cullen Jenkins will probably be excited about this change, McCarthy said, though he didn't directly say those two fit in to this scheme ideally. He did say the 3-4 features the"body type that will enhance the type of football we want to play here in November and December." McCarthy said Kampman is an outside rusher, but that doesn't mean he's going to be at end all the time.

Green Bay's current linebackers could fit in to this scheme very well, McCarthy summarized. Ryan Pickett is a pure nose tackle (to anchor the 3-4). Most of the pieces are here.

Winston Moss was a part of the Packers search process and is a big part of the future with the Packers staff; he will remain with Green Bay in his typical position as assistant head coach/linebackers coach. (It doesn't look like he's headed elsewhere, in other words.)

The promotion of Shawn Slocum as special teams coordinator over other candidates as special teams coordinator was due to the fact that he is an excellent coach. "It kept going back to Shawn." He also had the support in the building from colleagues and players. Slocum was an assistant to retired coordinator Mike Stock.

The firing of strength and conditioning coach Rock Gullickson was about making progress. I did not see growth and improvement. "And I did not see that. It was not what I was looking for. But it's a big part of our program, it's a big part of our program that needs to improve. We are a young football team. Now I don;t care if we're lifting free weights or flippin' tires or whatever we're doing, we need to do a better job in there." The environment was not ideal, but McCarthy would not pin injuries on the weight room work. "At the end of the day, are we moving forward? Is there growth? ... The attendance, the work ethic? You look at all those types of things. And it was not headed in the right direction."

Mark Lovat is one of five candidates to replace Gullickson; he assisted Gullickson before. McCarthy will take as long as it takes to fill out staff; will not rush the interview process.

Doesn't feel like this is almost starting a new system from scratch. A change was needed to bring home the next world championship. "I will do everything in my power to bring home the next championship," even if it means making these tough decisions.

These were the decisions of McCarthy; not GM Ted Thompson. He and president Mark Murphy were "very supportive" of these moves.

I'm even more anxious to see what TT does at #9 now. Most of the top DEs and LBs in this draft could be nice fits in a 3-4 system.

Mike McCarthy's decision to dump eight assistant coaches, including three of four coordinators, casts serious doubt on his ability to hire good coaches as well as the Packers' ability to attract top-flight replacements.
Crazy how they just signed the guy that 3 or 4 other teams were reportedly after. Of course, that article was written by a guy named MIKE HUNT.

This does totally change the needs of the defense, and where the Packers may go with pick 9.

Also makes a number of the players becoming available more interesting to the packers.

Igor Olshansky (SD) and Chris Canty (DAL) both are very good free agent DE's that have played in 3-4 systems. Both seem unlikely to return to their teams as well. Jason Taylor was made to be the rusher in the 3-4 as well, and can probably be had pretty cheaply this offseason.

I just don't see how Kampman is gonna fit though. He's way too light to play DE in a 3-4 and I just don't see him being able to play in space as a LB. As much as I hate to say it, he may be trade bait. (Kampman to the Redskins for Jason Taylor and their 1st rounder 1.13?)

Kampan does seem a little light, but he's always been pretty good against the run. Interestingly, I think Cullen Jenkins is a great fit for 3-4 end. He's 305 and has played both inside and out. I like him a lot in this scheme.

Interesting article:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?id=1946758

"Size and strength become more of a factor because he plays in confines of line play and seldom is in space using athletic ability. Ideally this guy should weigh 275-290 pounds and be able to beat double teams by getting a push. It's a more physical task then that of a 4-3 end."

I think our biggest issues will be at linebacker, especially inside linebacker. AJ Hawk is a horrible fit inside, he might be decent outside, and Barnett also is not a great fit.

I think our d line should be fine, and I again reference that Kampman used to play D Tackle. He can definitely play end in the 3-4. a 3-4 end does not always have to be a two gap lineman, and I am sure Cullen jenkins will be the big run stuffing end.

To comment on the poster who mentioned Olshansky and Canty, I think Olshansky would come much cheaper, and should be a target. No need to spend a lot of $$$ on 3-4 ends, you just want a player who is going to fill his role, namely, stop the run. If you are going to spend money on the interior, it should be the nose tackle (i.e. Ted Washington, Vince Wilfork, Hloti Ngata, Casey Hampton).

Jenkins and Kampman are both converted DTs, so they are fine at the ends of a 3-4... and we have a decent guy who will be ok at DT in 3-4 (Pickett)...I think Barnett and Hawk are decent fits as LBs as well...

Heck, I've thought we should switch to a 3-4 for a few years now and move KGB to OLB and have him blitz regularly (or a hybrid 3-4/4-3 or something similar)... pretty much since Kampman moved outside...

If they are indeed going primarily with the 3-4, I wouldn't mind seeing them trade Kampmann. I think he would be ok in a 3-4, but he is great in the 4-3. If they could get a first round pick for him I would be in favor of it.

It is really hard to sell a trade of Kampman as an improvement to the defense, even if he doesn't look like a fit for the new scheme right away. If Dom Capers is really a good coach, he should be able to utilize such a talented player in any scheme. There are other 3-4 teams who would love to have Kampman lining up at end right now.

It would also be difficult to get value for Kampman in a trade, and there's no way the Packers trade him at a "loss."

I'm even more anxious to see what TT does at #9 now. Most of the top DEs and LBs in this draft could be nice fits in a 3-4 system.
If everything is equal I can't see how they couldn't draft an offensive tackle first. They made a major investment on a QB that has been known to get hurt and while he stayed healthy this year he took some major shots. The defense is something that should be helped in the draft, but they need to address as much as they can on the defensive side in FA because they need to have people that have been in the 3-4 to help the transition.

He can definitely succeed in the 3-4. Just take a look at Justin Smith of the 49ers, who has a similar build to Kampman, and plays a similar style (Although Kampman is the superior player). He was a 4-3 end with the Bengals and signed on to play with the 49ers as a 3-4 end. Finished with 73 tackles and 7 sacks. VEry good numbers from an end in a 3-4.

Definitely agree here. Offensive Tackle is very deep in elite talent this draft, and the Packers should be in prime position to land one at their spot. The great thing about the 3-4 is that you can often get impact players in the scheme in the mid to late rounds. Packers should focus on free agency for their defensive players.

I wouldn't complain about taking an OT at #9. Andre Smith, Michael Oher, Eugene Monroe and Jason Smith all look very solid to me and should grade out high. Andre Smith may be the front runner to be the first OT off the board, but I really don't see much difference between them.

Agreed. Also depends on if TT spends there in FA or defense. If they somehow can get Jordan Gross...why worry about that in the draft that high.Again...a big if there with FA.But I don't see how with this switch that TT will remain inactive in FA this offseason.

I don't think Gross is going anywhere. If the Panthers can't sign him to a long term deal there is a good chance they throw the franchise tag on him again. Fox Sports had an article last week stating that it would cost the Panthers roughly $17M to put the tag on Peppers, and $9M for Gross.

I would prefer Suggs to Peppers for the 3-4, and he can probably be had cheaper as well.

Can you provide a link to Kampman having ever played extensively (or even a single down) at DT? It's my understanding that he played exclusively at LB in high school, and exclusively at LB for at least his first two years at Iowa. He then switched to DE prior to his junior season at Iowa and played at that position for the remainder of his collegiate career and NFL career to date. Did he play there for the Pack when there were injuries? I'm not saying he couldn't play end in a 3-4 scheme...he does seem to have the body type that could pack on a bit more beef, and he's always been pretty strong against the run...but I'm always a bit skeptical of plans to change players body-types to fit schemes, and he's already apparently done that once. If anything, his experience at LB and ability to get to the QB seems to indicate it might be better to go in the other direction and have him play at OLB in the 3-4. In any case, while everybody seems excited about this switch to a 3-4, in my opinion it's going to demand revolutionary, rather than evolutionary, changes to our defensive roster. I'll give you Pickett at nose tackle, and Cullen Jenkins seems made for 3-4 DE. But that's about it as far as players already on the roster that will slip seamlessly into the 3-4. Hawk and Barnett are 4-3 weakside LBs (IMO) who've both been misplaced playing at MIKE. I have my doubts about either of them being particularly successful playing inside LB in a 3-4. Perhaps even more crucially, we don't have a single LB on the roster who could play OLB and get to the QB with any kind of frequency, unless Kampman gets moved there. Who's going to do it? Poppinga? Please. He's got 3 career sacks, and none in the past two years. Chillar (and, frankly, just about every other LB on the roster) averages about a sack/year. So even if Kampman is able to play at 3-4 end, we pretty much need 3 or 4 different LBs for the new scheme, or an additional 3-4 DE as well if Kampman assumes one of those OLB spots. That's a lot to ask from free agency and the draft. It can be done, but I'm not as optimistic as most. I'm particularly worried about the draft. At 1.09 we seem to be in the "sweet spot" of this draft: optimally poised to snatch a franchise LT without having to pay top-5 draft pick money for him. Now with the system change, I won't be at all surprised to see us "reach" for a 3-4 OLB there, or even a nose tackle. Anyway, my two very pessimistic cents...somebody please reassure me the sky ain't falling.
