Joy buzzer/hand buzzer - toy

A joy buzzer (also called a hand buzzer) is a practical joke device that consists of a coiled spring inside a disc worn in the palm of the hand. When the wearer shakes hands with another person, a button on the disc releases the spring, which rapidly unwinds creating a vibration which mimics an electric shock to the unsuspecting victim.

Comic genius stuff here.

7.YM - Everything is Cake! - Novelty Trend

I needed to take something not from the 70s/80s and this is the only thing on my trend list that I don’t despise.

There we were, all locked in our homes due to the pandemic - going crazy online. We needed something to capture our attention and distract us from our pending doom.

Oh look, a roll of toilet paper - nope, that’s red velvet. A basketball - uh uh, carrot cake. Someone’s hand? - guess again, that’s devil’s food (and the devil’s work)! Wait, is everything made of cake? Am I made of cake?

This meme lives on still today - I just found out recently that the ancient Mexican alien was indeed made of cake.

7.ee - Black Light Posters - Novelty Trend

If you were a kid in the 70s and didn't have a connection for Peyote or Acapulco Gold, you could still head to the back of Spencer Gifts at your local mall and trip out to the glowing artwork. Just make sure you washed your hair recently because black light is unforgiving of dandruff. Like most novelties, black light posters cycled from cool to ubiquitous to gone in a few short years.

7.zam: Mr. Microphone (toy)

Pretty novel for its time in the late '70s, but it's all about this awesome commercial ("Hey good lookin', we'll be back to pick you up later!")

Speaking of the commercial:
Wow do I remember that commercial! lol

Is this Ron Popeil's first appearance in this draft?

I feel inspired...

7.pa Ronco Pocket Fisherman (Flex - it's not a toy, it's sporting equipment!)

You can still get these - vintage or brand new 2nd generation!

I haven't thought about black light posters in forever even when seeing white dust spots under purple light at shows. But my pick today rattled loose a personal memory.

I don't remember having any posters because my room decor was more sports at the time but I did have a black light bulb. In proper 70s style, the bulb and socket were mounted in a stretched out Pepsi bottle that I'd won a church festival ring toss. It wasn't the safest configuration for a bare light bulb and I eventually knocked it over while sleeping and the bulb shattered into my bed. Deep in a sleeping teenager coma, I didn't notice the shards of glass until morning. I never bothered replacing it because the novelty of a black light without anything fluorescent had worn off.

Marvel comics had a set of black light posters in the early to mid 70's . Had them on my Xmas/birthday list for a few years but never did get one. They currently sell for $200-$1500 depending on character and condition.

Pick 7 Novelty Trend
NFTs

I'm a collector and a sports fan so I'm their target market but I just don't get these. I don't understand paying hundreds, even thousands for a digital image you can never touch and need a phone or computer to even look at it.

8.YM - Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Novelty Flex

A janitor was brought by mad scientists aboard the Satellite of Love and forced to watch crappy B movies with his robot friends.

Stupid, funny, original, novel.

8.ee - Whee-Lo (aka Gyro-Wheel) - Novelty Toy

The Whee-Lo was introduced in 1953 as kind of a hybrid of a yo-yo and a spinning top. It consists of two basic parts: a curved metal track and a plastic wheel with a magnetized axle. When tilted, the wheel rotates along the track but because of the magnets it is able to ride on both the top and bottom. Later models added a plastic slider at the base of the track that could control velocity of the wheel.

I was fascinated by the thing when I was a kid. You could get the wheel to run for a long time on its own momentum before gravity and friction spoiled the fun. I see they're still in production so I'm considering buying one for Christmas so there's a toy under the tree.

8.pa - Magic Snake (Toy)

I know Rubik's Cube is the king of the novelty toys in this era, but this one was really my favorite. It and the Cube are the only ones to survive to this day on my desk. Mine is brown and white, and it lives its life in four rotating states, depending on my random mood: soccer ball, cobra, gun, dog. For some reason, I couldn't find any ads showing the gun...

Forgot about the cross and the triangle thingy. I need to up my desk snake game!

8.zam: Keep America Beautiful/Earth Day (trend)

The non-profit Keep America Beautiful started in 1953 and kind of languished unknown, with Earth Day emerging in 1970 after a major oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara, CA the year before. Together novel trends that were way ahead of its time yet we're obviously still trying to figure it out.
One of the most memorable early cultural references was the "Crying Indian" PSA (I had the T-shirt of Iron Eyes Cody crying as a kid  ) - launched on Earth Day in 1971. Also that same year, Marvin Gaye was among the first performers to acknowledge environmental issues with "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)".

I think what is a novelty is getting more and more confusing.
I agree. Everytime I pick, I refer back to Eephus's definition on page 1:

Novelty
  1. the quality of being new and unusual
  2. something that has not been experienced before and so is interesting
  3. a cheap unusual object such as a small toy, often given as a present
Doesn't always make sense, but at least a guidepost.

9.YM - Drumstick - Novelty Frozen Treat

One of the OGs of the novelty frozen treat game. Such a beloved classic, it not only survived, it’s thrived for almost 100 years now.

A sugar cone with chocolate coating inside so it doesn’t get soggy or leak like a punk. Filled with ice cream and coated in chocolate, the classic is covered in peanuts. So many varieties nowadays to choose from - giant ones and tiny ones; covered in Oreo bits or nestle crunch bits or no bits at all; different flavors of ice cream and some even filled with caramel or fudge.

🍗

I considered drumstick when I took the Frosty. Figured with Choco Taco already, though, I had the best of the wafer cone/chocolate/ice cream/nut combo treats.

I'm not practicing good VBD here, but given the King Tut fiasco I don't want to lose the only other selection I've targeted since the beginning.

9.k4 NHL Winter Classic / Frozen*

The most fun event in the traditional "big four" sports. I went to the second ever one, at Wrigley in 2009, matching my beautiful Blackhawks against some team of evil losers.

*Nowhere in the rules or posts was it stated that "frozen" meant ice cream/frozen "treats"

That is definitely a novel approach to this category.
