Now that it has passed, please remember NOT to call it the “Inflation Reduction Act” anymore. Thank you. (1 Viewer)

If the main thrust of the Republican opposition to the new bill is that it’s ill-named, that’s going to be a real loser to the American public. This law is likely to be tremendously popular.
What happened to the Inflation Reduction Act? It was a fine name when it was being sold to the American public. Right after it passes the name is changed? Could it be because it was a load of **** calling it the Inflation Reduction Act in the first place? And why is the MSM so eager to follow that name change?

Tim - can you please update the Definitions thread with the new name? Thanks. 👍

I'm sorry did you say the American public is going to be mad at the Republicans over a name or the people who lied to them in passing the bill?

I don't know how a bill that is going to hire 87K armed IRS agents with shoot to kill Authority to go after the middle class is going to be popular.

Is this one of your fever dreams again?

What do you think about the contents of the bill?
I don’t care what any bill is titled.
It’s a monstrosity. Yeah, let’s hire 87,000 IRS agents, in the same week where an IRS job description is published with the requirement of carrying a gun and being willing to use deadly force.

yeah there has been that for a while I believe with some agents.
also the amount of agents ignores how its been gutted over the years.
And the bill is about a lot more than the IRS.

DId the D’s get everything they wanted in these bills, or will we hear excuses in two years about how they didn’t get everything,

according to some here, they are only going after the rich, this suggests otherwise - https://www.heritage.org/budget-and...en-who-those-87000-new-irs-agents-would-audit

It was a poorly named bill, to be sure. It makes sense that the media would eventually abandon the name since it could be confusing to people reading about the provisions contained in it. The media didn’t pick the name, politicians did.

I'm old enough to remember thousands of posts in these very forums referring to Obamacare, yet when I tried looking for the actual bill with that name, I came up empty. I remember hundreds of posts complaining about the "Don't Say Gay" Bill. Baffling that snowflake conservatives get so up in arms over the names of bills.

Don't you think people should pay their taxes and that an adequately staffed IRS department is necessary for that? IRS enforcement staff has declined 30% since 2010. Did you also know that the 87,000 is supposedly over the next 10 years? And that the projection includes turnover that is expected to be a loss of 50,000 over the next 6 years? And also that people making under $400,000 won't have higher chance of being audited. And that the requirement to carry a gun was for a small sub-section, only about 2000 specialized agents.

and yes, I can keep going.
And its still odd to take this much tie on one small portion of the bill and ignore the rest.

Did Tucker Carlson not mention that?
And I bring him up as yes, someone does watch him...and any googling of the gun provision brings up quotes by Carlson complaining about it...

The conservative playbook these days is nothing but shock and awe. 87k IRS agents!! Companies will pass taxes on to consumers!! Anything to give the base something to rail against no matter the actual intent of the law or whether or not it will help the country.

I'm not Rich, but snowflakes are colorless.

First off, I’m not a “snowflake Conservative”. And I could give a **** what they call it. The point of the thread obviously flew over your head. It’s about honesty and the MSM carrying water for the Democrats. I find the whole thing rather entertaining.

So teachers should carry guns, but IRS agents shouldn't? OK.

Did the government say that? Because thats sure a relief if they said that. I would be worried otherwise.

As for tax enforcement, both the IRS and the Treasury Department have said expanded funding will not take aim at middle-class Americans but instead focus on cracking down on large corporations and taxpayers who earned more than $400,000 annually.

"Specifically, I direct that any additional resources -- including any new personnel or auditors that are hired -- shall not be used to increase the share of small business or households below the $400,000 threshold that are audited relative to historical levels," said Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in an August 10, 2022 letter to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig.

Because they mislead. They are also full of side deals that cannot get passed on their own.

None of that has to do with throwing a tantrum over the names or nicknames of bills, which seems to be exclusively a MAGA thing.

How many posts are there on this very forum complaining about the moniker "Don't Say Gay"?

  • Prescription drug price reform: One of the most significant provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act will allow Medicare to negotiate the price of certain prescription drugs, bringing down the price beneficiaries will pay for their medications. Medicare recipients will have a $2,000 cap on annual out-of-pocket prescription drug costs, starting in 2025.
Huge win for the working and middle class.

Big Pharma spent $100 million trying to block this.

I assume the media called it the Inflation Reduction Act because that's the official name of the bill.

As for some grand conspiracy, I'm confused as how that's supposed to work. If the goal was to fool people, why would they call it by a different name once it was passed? Can someone explain this to me like I'm a five year old?

I saw a interview with the rep who came up with the inflation bill name. She looked like the cat that ate the canary, like they pulled one over on the people.

  • Creation of a 15% corporate minimum tax rate: Corporations with at least $1 billion in income will have a new tax rate of 15%. Taxes on individuals and households won’t be increased. Stock buybacks by corporations will face a 1% excise tax.
That really is great. Don’t throw it in as an add-on though. There are probably a number of good things in that package. Don’t keep throwing them In, it’s deceptive.the Right does this crap also.

What is wrong with adding "great things?" Isn't the biggest problem with adding things to bills is that most of them are bad, extra spending, pork, etc.?

There was an attempt to codify this into the law and Democrats blocked it because it would reduce revenues. The blue team knows and approves of IRS enforcement going well under this level - watch what they do, not what they say. What they did says watch out, we're all going to see more audits.

How would that be codified into law? Shouldn't people be required to pay their fair of taxes? I pay my share, why shouldn't everyone?

One reason it has to be done this way is due to the filibuster. They can't do unlimited bills via reconciliation, as I understand it. If they don't have 60 votes, it has to be in this bill.

These are good things. The opposition is still going to draw a line between the foolish branding attached to it and actual inflation though. It'll work too. Both of these items are net positives for future us, but the average american is simple minded and short sighted. To be clear I think this is much more of an us problem than them. In a capitalistic society I expect the powerful to use our lack of awareness against ourselves. Dems just consistently make the opposition's job very easy.

Sure. They called it the Inflation Reduction Act to gain popular support. Then on August 12th, right before it passed, a study was done by my alma-mater and it verified what anyone with half a brain could see - it wouldn't reduce inflation at all. After the Bill passed, no need for the deceptive name any longer. In fact - let's change the name so it doesn't come back to haunt us when it doesn't reduce inflation as advertised. Cute trick, eh?

Boy you really do get off on demonizing people don't you? Like I said, I don't care what you Libs want to call it. I just want to make sure that no one in here runs afoul of the Definitions thread.

By the way, Obamacare was coined by a Liberal Democrat. I'll have that updated as well.

I'm unclear on your point. In your example, conservatives were upset about the Florida bill being labeled 'Don't Say Gay'. Then, you are citing their displeasure with this new Federal bill being called 'Inflation Reduction Act'.
The Republican bill got a derogatory name, while the Democratic bill got a positive name. Of course Conservatives were unhappy in both instances.
