Disagree about Mathews. He will be the main back and Oliver will take the Woodhead role, with Brown back to a minimal role. At least that's how it should be.
Well, we haven't seen Oliver put the ball on the ground yet. That may give him a distinct advantage over Matthews. I had heard rumblings that the Chargers would be willing to let Matthews contract expire and let him walk away.
I was discussing the remainder of the season, and whether or not they let him walk is irrelevant to that discussion. I will say this. If they let him walk, I don't see them rolling into next season with just Woodhead, Oliver, and Brown at RB. In that situation, I would expect them to draft a RB in the first 3 rounds.
Oliver looks great today, but the Jets defense is gassed by the heat and the Chargers keeping the ball all day, plus they have lost multiple players to injury during the game. Obviously if Oliver plays this well on a regular basis, he will have a huge role going forward. But I don't expect he will play this well very often, if ever again. This could easily be the best game he will ever play, with 2 TDs and 2 50+ yard plays on the day.
