NYC explosion (gas leak) (2 Viewers)

Coworker got a call that her block had a gas explosion of some sort.

No other details, but I get my breaking news here, so thought I'd pass it along.

ETA: Her place is in the E Village. Maybe fire and not explosion.

ETA: 2nd and 7th. Looks like a bad manhole.

Instead of the 2nd ave dig, how about making sure the city isn't blowing up underfoot first?

I find it funny how all the 1st comments are news agencies asking for permission to use the photo.

Hopefully it occurring in the middle of a weekday would limit injuries, but obviously thinking of all those affected.

A very popular block on weekend nights, hell even Thursday happy hours. A few hours later and more people could have been hurt.

Listening to the scanner...firefighters are just amazing people. "Check out apartment 206." "10-4".

God bless.

I was outside in Union Square and I now reek of campfire. There was a ton of smoke blowing this way. One of my employees lives 5 doors down from the collapse. Just moved one week ago.

The couple said they were eating in the sushi restaurant when a man came in and asked to use the restroom. They say he 'didn't take enough time to use the restroom and then ran out' and that's when the restaurant exploded.

Highly suspect this is nothing....but, damn.

This one doesn't add up... If the explosion occurred where they were eating and they saw the man go by, they wouldn't be alive.

Heavily wager on a gas leak on this one.

Hopefully nobody killed.

FTR, I smell smoke on 5th and 14th.

ETA:

In a cab by Washington Swuare Park and the smell of smoke is strong.

ETA2:

On Bowery and Bleeker and don't smell anything, maybe a little weed but that's all.

I hope it's not the same one who had the house fire a year or two before my house fire?

this is some seriously scary ####. and I haven't looked at the news since you wrote that... imagine it's only gotten worse.

Scary. I believe El Floppo is East Village, likely other FBG's as well. Hopefully everyone is safe.
Hopefully El Floppo is all good, but his scarf met a slow, painful, fiery demise
all is fine at casa floppo. scarves too.

but dammit- picture brought back some really terrible memories of our fire. got me to watch a youtube video of it I had never seen... just how quickly it went into a giant ####-storm (our fire, not this, much worse event).

the wife walks our daughter to and from school right by there (explosion is about halfway between home and school) and we're all thankful they walked by that spot an hour earlier.

104 years (and one day) after the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire.

I smell conspiracy.
almost exactly a year after our most recent gas explosion up in harlem.

:(

really hoping nobody lost their lives today. looking at those pictures from earlier- that's all I kept thinking about... and that there had to have been a lot of pets lost. :(

Woman I work with lives in the building next door down 7th.

She can't get in, but they did manage to get her cat out to her.

Lousy situation.

Our babysitter's building has been vacated too.

news-wise... Sounds like there IS somebody missing/presumed-dead?

Last I saw they're looking for two individuals (residents?)
somebody at work said there were two friends at the sushi place- one was injured, the other is missing.

from the NYT:

One young man presumed missing was on a date at the restaurant, according to his family, while the police say the second missing person is a busboy. The authorities declined to officially identify him pending notification of his family.

Hope there are no deaths. T&P for those living there. Unfortunately this will become more frequent as our infrastructure continues to crumble around us.

NYC is spending a ton of money on infrastructure, just on pie in the sky ideas.

2nd Ave Subway, East Side Access...gas explosions and broken water lines.

fwiw- at a macro level at least... NYC has been doing infrastructure work on Houston St around my place for almost 5 years- lots of big new pipes going in the ground.

60%/of the gas lines in NYC need to be replaced. They are old, with no lining and they are crumbling.

In a related note, I have a colonoscopy scheduled for next week.
