O' Connell cut? (1 Viewer)

At first I thought, "Guess they're confident that Brady's shoulder is fine." Then I thought, "Maybe they're getting ready to bring someone else in."

Even if they are confident, seems like a strange move? I have to think they are trying to upgrade there and just haven't announced anything....

This really surprises me...especially when you compare O'Connell and Matt Cassel. The Pats took a late round flyer on Cassel after he sat on the bench at USC. While he played real well last year anyone who saw him in the pre-seasons (i.e. the only time we saw him play) prior to last year would not argue that he looked awful. If he had been cut prior to opening day last year no one would have blinked an eye. On the flipside the Pats used a third round pick on O'Connell and all signs prior to the exhibition season indicated they were high on him and grooming him to be Brady's primary backup. While he has not played well this preseason I find it odd that they gave up so quickly on him while they were very patient with Cassel. There must be something about O'Connell that they are really down on because they sure seem to be throwing the towel in very quickly on him.

O'Connell was having a real problem in camp with the touch pass. Now I am sure there were other reasons as well. Maybe his command of the play book wasn't what they expected. Last year most of us were surprised that Cassell was kept going into the season given they didn't appear to have a lot of confidence in him with the quick hook he had taken in his brief appearances during regular season games. What transpired worked out well for both the team and the player. I have heard Huard also; if that is the case I would think it would be Huard and Hoyer who are kept. Hoyer showed some moxie and good on-field presence and field recognition.

I am only mildly surprised. I was surprised when they brought in Walter because O'Connell needed more competition to push him for the number two spot. With Cassell, they didn't bring in guys (simms, etc.) which meant to me that they thought Cassell was doing everything he could in his control. Bringing in Walter told me that O'Connell wasn't pushing himself hard enough mentally or in practice. The QB is an extension of the coach on the field. In NE, he cannot be lacking in terms of effort or preparation. Then came the Cincy game. O'Connell made a terrible play and mental lapse on the last play of the game. On 3rd and 12 from the 40 with 16 seconds to play and no times out left, he scrambled instead throwing the ball away. To make matters worse, he made no effort to get out of bounds, and time expired before they could get another snap off. That play made clear that he was not into the game and thinking about down and distance. NE preaches situational football, and O'Connell failed there- flat out failed. That was simply not an acceptable mental mistake. He also had no command of the huddle. O'Connell follows that up with a two interception performance in a game where the number one QB has knocked out of the game. He is seen laughing on the sideline despite playing poorly. This, I believe for Belichick, was the last straw. He should be focused and driven. He may well be playing in NFL games in two weeks. Instead, he is Mr. Giggle son the sideline. I think he was cut immediately (instead of them trying to trade him for a 6th or a 7th) as a message to the whole team. We don't act like that here. We might make physical mistakes, but we will not have mental lapses or be nonchalant about poor play.I don't think this speaks much one way or the other about Brady's health. It is more about Belichick firmly setting the tone for a team that did not make the playoffs last year.

Seeing how it is the worst possible outcome for a Raider fan, the real news here is that Andrew Walter is Brady's handcuff.

I would actually like the Bills to give him a shot. Edwards doesn't seem to have anything anymore and I can't see him being a our starting QB next year if he keeps this wimp thing up. Fitzpatrick is not a quality football player in the NFL. And worse case scenario, we pick O'Connell's brain for everything he knows about the Patriots. We play them week 1, why not?

Grooming my man Brian Hoyer as the long term #2!

snagged up by detroit --- from a team w/an undefeated regular season, to a team w/an 0-16 season on record.
