Name Age Contract Detail Guaranteed money

M. Jones-Drew 29 3 yr $7,500,000 $1,200,000

Latavius Murray 23 4 yr $2,266,200 $106,200

Darren McFadden 26 1 yr $1,654,000 $100,000

Jeremy Stewart 25 1 yr $570,000 $0

Kory Sheets 29 1 yr $525,000 $30,000

Marcel Reece 28 3 yr $11,027,000 $4,116,294

Jamize Olawale 24 1 yr $570,000 $0

Olawale and Stewart are 3rd-4th string emergency options, not stars in the waiting.

Sheets was a star in the CFL. His deal is a cheap look for the team, I guess. He's a backup talent.

Reece is the man when he actually sees the ball. Why pay him $11M to waste away his talent?

Latavius Murray offers the most potential, which means he won't ever touch the ball knowing the Raiders.

DMC and MJD (sounds like an old rap group) is a great duo.... if it was like 2010.

What to make of this backfield? Who's to own?

MJD keeping the seat warm for a 2015 rookie. DMC in the COOP role.

Wouldn't get my hopes up for any of them, but if anyone is going to be useful then my money would be on MJD.

Highest salary. Best track record. There you have it.

Its like they are playing fantasy football. Who stockpiles this many RBs in todays NFL?You think that rookie will be any good? They should spend their first 3-4 picks on QBs if you asked me.

It's not that many RBs. It's really just MJD and McFadden - who may be a surprisingly good combination (they could also be toast).

Reece is a FB, that can be used in the passing game and to fill in, Sheets was a flier who was signed "just in case", Murray was a late round pick that needs to show something in camp and the rest are camp bodies/depth.

Fantasy relevance of the Oakland RB situation in early April? Good luck reading the tea leaves. Any one of them could emerge as the back to own and I'm betting that injuries are going to be a big part of that.

McFadden is still in his prime, only 26 yo. I know it's hard to believe. The tag line on him remains the same. You have to put the dread, "if he stays healthy" refrain in front of any praise you want to attempt to give him. On a fantasy PPG basis, when healthy, still has the highest upside of the group. He should come cheaper this year than even last year based on the perception of a 3 headed monster RB situation, (and don't forget about Jeremy Stewart who the Raiders just signed his tender)

MJD says he's got a chip on his shoulder, and that the Jaguars did him wrong. But he's 29 yo and never was the same after his lis franc, that came ironically against the Raiders. Before that he was an ironman. But that doesn't necessarily mean he will be able to get through the season unscathed. Looking at last year's tape, he still has the low center of gravity, the excellent vision, and can still dart through small crevices in the line. I think he's got some left in the tank. But his last year's yards per carry average was a paltry 3.4 YPC coming from a career average of 4.5 YPC, and a 4.8 YPC the year before. So what happened? Lis franc is what happened. MJD no longer has that second gear when he gets into space. He's been reduced to a talented plodder. He no longer has the wheels to break through the secondary and house them. His longest run of the last two years was 17 yards. The Raiders didn't pay an awful lot to get him, but at this point in his career no one was going to pay MJD what he thought he was worth. I have high hopes he can contribute on short yardage and on the stripe.

Latavius Murray is a DMC clone in a lot of ways. He's an excellent reciever out of the backfield and fluid in the open field. I can see why some are hyping him. Injuries scuttled his rookie campaign, but if he can put it together, while the other vets break down, he could emerge from this RB situation as the winner. Not enough info on his pro career to say he's injury prone or just had an unfortunate year one. He's the wildcard. But before getting too far ahead of ourselves, note that he didn't hit a 1,000 yard rushing season till his senior year at UCF, and was only a true stud RB in high school.

This situation looks like a full blown RBBC in April, but it's worth monitoring. The Oakland RB situation should be dirt cheap right now and ripe for speculation.

I'd like to add that MJD averaged those 3.4 yards behind arguably the worst interior line last year. Sure he's lost a step, but he didn't have any room to run last year.

Also in the final 5 games of the season that MJD played in he averaged 4.5 yards per carry.

I have to think McFadden and MJD will get the bulk of the carries when healthy. Reece is locked in unless there is some decent cap savings since he can play FB and fill in and touch the ball if needed. The rest are probably fighting for a couple of roster spots and I would think Murray is a favorite for one of those 2 spots. That leaves Stewart, Sheets and Olawale fighting for 1 spot in my mind. Of course it is April.

Rashad Jennings put up 2.8 ypc in 2012 in JAX. But he looked solid last year in OAK (4.5 and 8.1 per).

Not saying MJD will shine -- he's not someone I peg for a long career and at 29 he might be cooked -- but it's possible he'll be decent.

DMAC will get the lions share of touches with MJD playing a change of pace role. Of course that is as long as DMAC stays healthy. I really see them as the only guys worth owner in redraft.

I knew you couldn't resist bashing DMC in any thread given the opportunity. Be that as it may, not everyone completely agrees with your assessment of the starter situation in Oakland. From Rotoworld last month:

ESPN's Paul Gutierrez expects Darren McFadden to open the season as the Raiders' starting running back.

McFadden was reduced to a backup role for the final two games last season and won't have much job security playing on a one-year deal. Even if he manages to hold off Maurice Jones-Drew, McFadden has never played a full season and remains a huge injury risk. The Raiders may ultimately use McFadden as a change-of-pace back, with Jones-Drew getting the majority of work between the tackles. Apr 19 - 9:50 PM

McFadden fielding kick offs in OTA's.... It is OTA's and they could just be experimenting with him but it might be a way they see him getting a few more touches that they might anticipate he loses to MJD. I still don't get why he resigned in Oakland. He needed a change of scenery more than most.
