“The bargain that any president strikes with is, you give me this office and in turn my, fears, doubts, insecurities, foibles, need for sleep, family life, vacations, leisure is gone,” Obama said. “I am giving myself to you.”

Obama went on to say that “the American people should have no patience for what’s going on in your head because you’ve got a job to do” and that people should only run for president if they’re willing to make that sacrifice.

When asked by the host if he could imagine himself making that kind of commitment, he said, “Sure.”

President Obama is taking a 15-day vacation in Martha’s Vineyard next month, despite the widespread criticism he’s received for not visiting the U.S.-Mexico border while it descends into chaos.

You guys gotta help define the term "vacation" too. For example, I'm in Lexington, MA or traveling to/from the city by car for most of the month of August. But every day (night, if I need to drive all day), I put in a minimum of 5-6 hours on the clock doing meetings over the phone/computer, sending out estimates for prospective clients, dealing with management issues for our 16 other team members, sending bills/payments and doing bookkeeping, et al. So...am I on "vacation?!"

Now compare my schedule to Obama's. He'll be in Martha's Vineyard for a couple weeks. Fact. But apart from the time he's sleeping, what percentage of his day do you think will be spent on things outside of official government/party business? 50%? 25%? Obama's schedule on vacation probably involves more work hours in the day than 90% of us spend in the office when we're NOT on vacation. Yet folks want to keep pressing this as an issue?

Seems moronic to me. But maybe after drinking enough Kool-aid, folks can pretty-easily be convinced that they're drinking the finest wine.

Plus add in the fact that Obama doesn't have superhuman strength. So he has to work even harder.

Just another example of a leftist talking point thrown out against Bush that shows they didn't understand the reality of the world at the time

That's horse-####. We were told he had superhuman strength. Another Obama lie.

It is very hard to bring up a point that is anti liberal without liberals responding with mockery no matter what, even if the point is valid. I call it the jon stewart syndrome.

Fixed. ;)

As of Aug. 13, 2013, Obama is on his 15th vacation trip, covering all or part of 96 days total. He's spending this vacation in Martha's Vineyard with his family.

At the same point in his presidency — Aug. 13, 2005 — George W. Bush had made 51 visits to his ranch in tiny Crawford, Texas, totaling all or part of 335 days. (Note: Bush sometimes used the property to host world leaders.) Bush also traveled seven times to his family’s oceanside compound in Kennebunkport, Maine, covering all or part of 26 days — bringing his total number of vacation days at this point in his presidency to 349 days. (335+26 doesn’t = 349, but remember the “all or part of” caveat.)

What about former President Bill Clinton? At this point in his second term, he had taken 11 vacations covering all or part of 84 days.

“The trips were mostly to Martha’s Vineyard or Jackson Hole, WY. Though he also spent a few days in Hilton Head for New Year’s and then to the Virgin Islands for a few days,” Knoller said in an email.

And former President Ronald Reagan? At this point in his second term he had made 29 trips to his ranch in California, spanning all or part of 180 days. None of these figures includes visits to Camp David, the presidential retreat outside Washington, which Knoller does not consider vacation.

What was your point?
That Obama is a liar
Of course he is. He's a politician.

Are you seriously saying that he promised to give up vacations with his statement? Did he also promise to give up sleep, family time, and everything else he mentioned? Or do you think maybe it was just some hyperbole about the stresses of the job?

Whoa whoa whoa there, cowboy. You might need to define "hyperbole" for a few folks, as that sounds an awful-lot like higher ed liberal commie-talk to me...

Not every politician is a liar and Obama is certainly a bigger liar than 99 percent of politicians

Why not just use "%", goofball.

Obama is always on vacation! FALSE. President Obama took 131 vacation days in his first 4 years in office. That puts him on pace for 262 days during 8 years in the White House. By contrast Bush took 1,020 days (including a 5-week vacationthe longest by any President in nearly 4 decades), and Reagan took 484 days. Once again for the mathematically challenged, Obama is on pace to take fewer vacations than both Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. - See more at: http://www.forwardprogressives.com/debunking-almost-every-republican-lie-against-president-obama/#sthash.WIjoyLY3.dpuf

I've always thought that this particular complaint, which was also made against Bush, was especially ironic. I mean, if you dislike a President and are opposed to his policies, wouldn't you WANT him to be on vacation?

It's not like he isn't working on vacation. Factor in technology and he probably can get more done/be more involved on vacation than most Presidents could in the Oval Office.

The good news is by parting the water and walking to the Vineyard instead of taking the ferry he saved the American taxpayers $20...

Maybe if he didn't take so many vacations he would be the biggest liar. Slacker....

This is actually a part of a 7 part discussion with Bob Hebert in 2006. Interesting to see in retrospect. Partly because he (like Hillary) was running for office in 2006 by means of doing his book tour.

Another interesting part is the leadoff, Sen. Obama was promising "a brand new form of political leadership." Little did we know we would be getting the oldest kind of political leadership in buckets.

The "widespread criticism" Gordangit!TM alludes to is absurd, GOPers said back under Bush that he could be president just as well from Crawford TX as he could from DC and he had two full scale wars going on then.

But the main point is Obama's ridiculous, oversweeping criticism on the same basis in 2006. It's kind of sad that supporters of a man who promised "a brand new form of political leadership" have been reduced to shouting "Bush was just as bad!" Great.

Yea, however those numbers don't include the 1,000 days spent campaigning by Obama and another 1,000 days playing golf by Obama.

I feel the same way about this as I do about gridlock in Congress -- if nothing's being done, at least they aren't screwing things up even more than they already are. Obama can stay on vacation through 2016 for all I care.

everyone thinks they'll be different, until they get there. nature of the beast unfortunately

Getting mad about the President trying to wind down a bit is silly - any guy in that job needs it.

Getting mad about Biden going on vacation is also silly - the less he is out in public the better for the country.

Getting mad about the first Lady using her position to have basically non-stop tax funded vacations should make folks a bit angry. She regularly takes large trips with large entourages and spends insane amounts of money doing it.
