I went to the afternoon practice today.

Notable no-shows: Donnie Edwards (I'm not sure why); Vincent Jackson (I have no idea why); Jamal Williams (knee); Roman Oben (foot), Bhawoh Jue (knee).

At LB, Wilhelm ran with the first team in place of Edwards. At CB, Jammer and Florence ran with the first team, with Cromartie as the nickel. At safety, Hart and Kiel ran with the first team in the 11-on-11s, but I'm pretty sure it was McCree and Hart in the 7-on-7s. At OL, Leander Jordan ran with the first team in place of Oben. Ryon Bingham started at NT in place of Jamal.

Who looked good: Shawne Merriman, Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates, Drayton Florence, Greg Camarillo, Darren Sproles, Andre Lott.

Who did not look good: Brandon Manumaleuna, Kurt Smith, AJ Feeley, Eric Parker.

I was disappointed that they didn't do any one-on-ones. That's my favorite thing to watch, and I would have loved to see Jammer, Florence, and Cromartie match up in single coverage against McCardell, Parker, Osgood, et al.

After some individual work and special teams, they did some four-on-threes, seven-on-sevens, and eleven-on-elevens. That was it.

Quick note on special teams. Kurt Smith's kickoffs were very high, but were only going down to about the ten yard line. Maybe that was by design, but I'd really like to see him get them down around the goal line. Darren Sproles looked super fast on all his returns. Cromartie had one nice return as well

Offense. There was a huge drop-off in effectiveness from the first unit to the second and third units. Most of it was due to the QB position, it seemed. Rivers ran the offense extremely well, made quick reads, found the open man, and delivered the ball very accurately. AJ Feeley and Charles Whitehurst both struggled. Neither one was nearly as accurate as Rivers. Part of it may have been that the second- and third-team receivers were not running routes as crisply as the first-team guys, either. Overall, Rivers, Gates, Tomlinson, and McCardell all looked like they were in mid-season form. Gates in particular was getting open and catching medium-range passes. Eric Parker was getting pushed off his patterns a bit.

The second-team WRs were Kassim Osgood and Greg Camarillo. Camarillo seemed like the lone bright spot on offense when the first team was sitting out. He got open a few times and made some nice plays. TE Manumaleuna is built like an OG, and I don't mean that as a compliment. He is too thick around the mid-section. He looked out of shape, and he did not run good patterns. (He appears to have soft hands, though.)

I have no idea where Vincent Jackson was. Rashaun Woods was there, but didn't get any work in any of the 7-on-7s or 11-on-11s. I don't know why.

Defense. Shawne Merriman was disrupting everything today. The players were not in full pads, and none of the drills were full-contact, but the offensive players were still trying to make their blocks and the defensive guys were trying to fight through them and get in the QB's face. Merriman was in the QB's face all day. He batted down one of Feeley's balls, and pressured the QB (and then let up) on many other plays. Steve Foley was also getting pressure on the QB.

Drayton Florence had a nice interception in the 11-on-11s. I think it was Feeley who threw it, but I don't remember for sure. Florence stepped in front of the WR on an out pattern plucked the ball out of the air. (Merriman was in the QB's face.)

Carlos Polk was going through all the drills with a lot of enthusiasm. It's nice to have him back this year; I hope there's a roster spot for him. It's easy to see why he's so effective on special teams; everything he does is with full intensity.

Igor Olshansky and Luis Castillo are both very impressive athletes. I watched the DL going through their agility drills from just a few yards away, and it's amazing how big and agile all those guys are. Olshansky and Castillo stood out.

Sprooles (Mighty Mite) is a stud. It's really too bad that he's behind arguably the best Rb and one of the best backups in the NFL. The Rivers to Feely drop off is one concern I'd have for Chargers fans or FF. Rivers will probably be fine if not great, Feely is horrible.

Good stuff.

I think people are underestimating Rivers. Even with his delivery he gets the ball out quick and on target. Merriman is going to be a friggen beast this year and beyond (thank you Eli and the NYG). I was hoping to hear something about Jackson, he and Rivers seemed to connect last year at camp. If the Chargers DBs can step it up this year and if the SD brass will stop going into that damn what looks to be a prevent D when SD is ahead the SD D is going to be solid, with or without Edwards.

Notable no-shows: Donnie Edwards (I'm not sure why)
I just learned that Edwards is at a wedding this weekend. Excused absence. (Same with Mike Goff. I didn't even notice that he wasn't there.)

good info and thanks Maurile

how can the Chargers get some use out of Sproles other than ST? any ideas?

I picked up Osgood as a cheap FA, figuring if he was ever going to break out, it would be this year because he and Rivers spent so much time on the second team together. A long shot I realize, but worth a flyer. Did Osgood get any time at all with the first team? Thanks for the report!

Great read.

I think Rivers is going to be a lot better than people are giving him credit for.

I also think we will all see that Drew Brees isn't nearly as good as LT and Gates made him look. JMHO.

Osgood was the third WR in three-WR sets with the first team today.I suspect that role will ultimately belong to Vincent Jackson this year, however. I think Osgood will play mostly on special teams.

I wish we knew why Vincent Jackson was absent.

Weird that Woods didn't get any 7 on 7, or 11 on 11 reps.
Chargers | Jackson misses actionSat, 10 Jun 2006 19:21:35 -0700

Casey Pearce, of Chargers.com, reports San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Jackson (quadriceps) spent most of workouts Saturday, June 10, watching after aggravating a quadriceps injury Friday, June 9.

Some predictions:

Shawne Merriman will win a Defensive Mvp soon, within 3 years.

Eric parker is on the field more than and will out perform Vincent Jackson this year. Would love to know where Vinny was.

Donnie Edwards will not be on the team in September.

Big limb here, Rashun Woods = nothing.

Herd Jammer was awesome in a previous OTA, any report on him?

Chargers injury update, WR Jackson hurts quad

Casey Pearce

6/10/2006

Linebacker Donnie Edwards was excused from Saturday’s practice so that he could attend his brother’s wedding.

“I always tell my players that their priorities should be God, family and football, in that order,” Schottenheimer said.

Edwards did work with his teammates on Friday and has been a regular throughout the offseason program.

Wide receiver Vincent Jackson practiced Friday afternoon despite aggravating a quadriceps muscle in the morning practice. He mostly observed Saturday morning as his teammates worked. Schottenheimer said it was simply a precautionary measure and the team is not overly concerned about the situation.

Defensive tackle Jamal Williams (knee), safety Bhawoh Jue (knee, shoulder) and offensive tackle Roman Oben also sat out of Saturday’s practice and will not participate in drills while they continue to heal. Guard Mike Goff was also absent so that he could attend a family wedding.

They could probably use him as a slot WR, screens, reverses and such. 5'6 is tiny, but he should be able to get open, if Rivers is accurate enough for shorter routes, hitches, etc.

Wow. Earth-shattering predictions. :)

I have a question regarding Hart.

I guess he slipped under my radar or something, but in seeing a ADP someone from Zealots posted, Hart was 14th out of DBs chosen (ahead of some big names).

Is this guy a real up-and-comer?

IDP ADP is very hard to gauge this time of year. It's an odd thing that happens every offseason in that they fluctuate way moreso than offensive players. IIRC Kawika Mitchell's ADP jumped 5-6 rounds by the summer.ETA noticing guys "out of turn" like Hart can be oh so useful in late August so I'd try and keep a list handy of them

I think that is the plan.Marty has discussed trying to get him the ball "in space" more this season and he's worked out with the WR's so I'm guessing he'll be getting more opportunities on screen passes and lining up in the slot.

I hope it's not just the typical summer coach-speak and they follow through on that.

No. That's just way too high to even consider Hart... 14th DB? He's not even a lock to win a starting job.

Merriman is a beast and is in for a big year...BUT, let's take his performance with a grain of salt. Since the players have to really limit their contact, the defensive line has a huge advantage over the offensive line during OTAs. Offensive linemen can't be as agressive and attempt to mow down defensive linemen. It's why WRs often times look better than what they are and DBs don't look as good. Just my :2cents:

Based on the team report Cooper is the top backup at ILB, but Wilhelm was in with the starters since Edwards was not in attendance. Something changed?

Looks like the safety situation in SD is going to be something to follow closely. I would have to think Mcree gets a spot, but it appears Hart may be pushing Kiel.

Some think Jue will also be in the mix. My opinion is in the minority but I was more impressed with Jue than either Kiel or Hart last season. He is coming off an injury though.

I thought that was a little strange too. I don't think Wilhelm or Cooper are starting caliber NFL LB's though.
