There was an eyewitness account in Australia of a Great White rising out of the water and taking off the end of a pier that was 20-30 ft above the water. Seriously. No one believes them of course despite the damage to the pier. But let's say it happened. To do that it would have to be a Megalodon. Fossils indicate they grew to 50 ft in length. Maybe they aren't so extinct after all?

Have you ever seen a megalodon tooth? Frighteningly large.

Yes. I have seen the jaws as well. If those things are still out there that would be both frightening and exciting.

Some suggested an orca or a giant squid could have been the culprit.
This was my first thought. Not sure if Giant Squid are known to attack sharks, but Orca have been seen attacking a Great White.

Orcas can and will kill a Great White. Heck porpoises have been known to kill sharks for that matter.

Very little evidence suggests killer whales dive to 2000 ft, and certainly not hauling a 10 ft Great White.
Well they have been observed diving up to 600 or so feet feeding on the bottom. And really we don't have enough data to say they couldn't go that far but I would be surprised. As for hauling a little 10 footer:

Schramm noticed a great white shark moving close to the boat. It was probably attracted to the surface by the smell of the recently killed sea-lion. It started swimming away from the boat when one of the killer whales changed its behaviour and swam directly at the shark. The whale-watchers collectively held their breath as the two animals disappeared beneath the waves. Moments later, the killer whale came to the surface with the great white in its mouth. The shark was motionless and inverted. The killer whale held the shark in this way for 15 minutes before it began biting at the carcass and eating the liver.
I think strength isn't an issue.

Are there killer whales in Australia?
Yep. Been reported sightings all areas. In fact there was a pod in Australia that used to help whale hunters:

The killer whales of Eden, Australia were a group of killer whales (Orcinus orca) known for their co-operation with human hunters of other whale species. They were seen near the port of Eden in southeastern Australia between 1840 and 1930. Sperm Whale.

Big teeth, plus almost limitless diving range.
But that wouldn't be much of a meal for them. It would be kind of odd. Not impossible of course but still doesn't seem likely. Kill at the surface and drag down when they usually hunt at depth is a big change.

sharks are solitary creatures, and if they don't learn to work together, the growing threat from the east will kill them. They need to form an alliance of some kind, a coalition against their more powerful enemies. But they need a good and memorable name for such a treaty.

Whatever it is I hope the Japanese find it tasty because I want that ####### thing hunted to extinction quick, fast and in a hurry.

I think The Coadjutor Treaty has a nice sound to it.

Actually caught on video.

What happens is the shark will go into a frozen-with-fear like state while a smaller shark shocks him with the element of surprise and then decides to kill him. Happens all the time. Especially in places like Afghanistan.

Could well be.

That is just amazing to me...

Stuff like that makes me think the Blackfish / Anti-Orca captivity folks are really on point with all the noise they're making.

This might be :tinfoilhat: territory, but maybe this sheds new light on mass dolphin and whale beachings. What if instead of just something being wrong wit htheir sonar/radar, there was something so frightening down there that causes these groups to panic, herd stampede style.
