Odell Thurman's Reinstatement DENIED! (1 Viewer)

(KFFL) The Cincinnati Bengals announce the NFL has notified the team that LB Odell Thurman's petition for reinstatement has been denied by the office of the commissioner. Thurman will have the opportunity to reapply for reinstatement following the 2007 season.

That is very suprising.

With the commish reducing the suspensions of others this offseason and seemingly everyone in agreement that Thurman had toed the line of the policy, there has to be more to this story. Could be something simple like being around trouble at the party in Georgia, or something we've yet to hear about. Don't know if we'll ever hear the reason for the denial but something doesn't add up here.

 This is exactly what I was thinking.

Maybe we'll hear something.Where will Brooks' ranking be now? Will he be a 3 down LB?
I don't think this changes anything. Marvin could've had something else in mind but it was widely thought that Thurman would work his way back as a WLB. I posted a note in another thread where Brooks strongly hinted he'd play in the nickel.

Roger Goodell is my favorite commissioner of ALL-TIME!
 He's really cracking down on the misconduct. I'm also in the mindset that there is more behind this story than is being reported. Odell must have really messed up to be kicked out again for a year. What are the chances he tries to come back again next year? Any chance that this might knock down his confidence level and he reverts back into his mischeivous ways?

That's right. Even when the Whizinator was denied he was told he could reapply last october. This is a different period but saying he had to wait a whole season to reapply says a lot.

Kind of ironic considering what would have happend to the Lewises if Goodell had been commish a few years ago.

Mort was just on ESPN and they covered the Odell and Briggs situations. He talked about Lance but he didn't say anything about Odell. This is a bit weird.

Brooks = top 20 LB?he's pretty much guaranteed a 3 down role, right? (with Landon J)
I don't think it's "guaranteed" as Caleb Miller could rotate in with Johnson in the nickel. I think Brooks has nice upside, but I don't think he's a lock for 90 solos even in a three down role, which is what he'll need to hit the top 20. Could happen and not that there's a huge difference, but I think he's more likely to be in the mid-20s than the mid-teens. I have him 24 and I'm working under the assumption that he gets a significant number of nickel snaps.

Well, he's piqued my interest. Coming into the league via the supplemental after all kinds of weird issues including ballooning to almost 300 pounds... then getting in reasonable condition and playing okay when called upon... then I think about his early college career when he was freaky good... and I start thinking this he could be a major producer. I wouldn't reach for him, but I'd gladly take him after 20 or so LBs are gone.

I grabbed him as the 50th LB off the board in a 14 team tackle heavy league three weeks ago.

ETA: Brooks that is

Time for the appeal. http://www.bengals.com/news/news.asp?story_id=6147

Odell Thurman's representatives say he plans to file an appeal through the NFL Players Association early next week in a bid to at least reduce NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's extension of Thurman's suspension for another year.

The process starts early next week with attorney John Michels sending a letter to the NFLPA requesting that it argue the grievance and it then has 30 days to decide if it will take the case.

"It's a difficult appeal," said Michels Friday night. "The first tier is to convince the NFLPA and then it would go to the commissioner and he made the original decision."

Michels plans to draw up a letter this weekend, have Thurman read it Monday, and then send it to the union.

"We've got the backing of the team and the appeal should be received Monday," said Safarrah Lawson, who has known Thurman for several years. "We feel like he has complied with the guidelines set down by the league. He hasn't had a positive test. He's been clean and they can test him up to 10 times a month."

"He's extremely disappointed," said Lawson of Thurman. "He was where he had to be whenever he had to be there."

Goodell has a mixed record on his recent appeals. Pacman Jones withdrew his appeal of his one-year suspension for violations of the conduct policy after meeting with the commissioner. Two weeks ago Goodell reduced Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen's four-game suspension to two for two DUIs.

Michels takes heart in the Allen case, but is cautious.

"It's not that similar because they were in different stages of the substance abuse program," said Michels of a program in which Thurman was ahead of Allen in Stage Three. "But it is something we can look at. We're just surprised at what happened, and we hope we can get them to look at some things."
