I don't watch all the games. I don't claim who "should" win. Well, I probably will make a case for who I think should win, in the end.
But the point is we'll monitor who is in contention for OROY / DPOY. Will the winners be apparent by mid-season? Will the real voters make a choice that leaves no one happy? LET'S FIND OUT.
Add in more candidates as you like. It's especially easy for me to overlook rookies who play on bad teams/limited snaps/doing good stuff which doesn't show up in the box score.
Offensive Rookie of the Year – Notable Week 1 Performances
EJ Manuel, QB, Bills @ Patriots – Not the mind-blowing stats of 2012’s rookie QBs, but 67% comp. with 2 TDs and 7.7 ypc projects to an excellent season for this year’s only first-round rookie QB. No sacks or turnovers. Thought to be too injured to start until days before the game.
Marlon Brown, WR, Ravens @ Broncos – Admit it, you’re already starting to forget how to spell Kembrell Thomspon’s name. With Jacoby Jones out, the undrafted Brown immediately translated 6 targets into 4/65/1.
Geno Smith, QB, Jets vs. Buccaneers – He just wins, baby. Well, he also absorbs 5 sacks and gives the ball away twice. But he had 300 yards of total offense with no help from his RBs, and Kellen “Yeah I’m still in the league” Winslow as his #1 receiver.
“Linemen Don’t Get Awards!” entries: Jordan Mills, RT, Bears vs. Bengals / Lane Johnson, RT, Eagles @ Redskins
Close to the Conversation: Eddie Lacy, RB, Packers @ 49ers – (A fumble and 2.9 ypc are bad. A touchdown and 70 total yards on 15 touches against a strong defense are good). NOT Terrelle Pryor who ever said that come on man.
Defensive Rookie of the Year – Notable Week 1 Performances
Star Lotulelei, DT, Panthers vs. Seahawks – Played just over half the game, but was strong against the run and generated some interior pass rush.
Tyrann Mathieu, DB, Cardinals @ Rams – Some blunders in coverage, but made one of the plays of the game in turning a would-be TD for the Rams into a fumble. Totaled 7 tackles.
Close to the Conversation: Sharrif Floyd, DT, Vikings @ Lions – Another rookie whose impact may be limited as he rotates with veteran DL throughout the season. No pass rush but (mostly) strong work vs. the run. (Okay so I can't think of many defense dudes.)
