Multiple formation is not necessarily an offensive system. All offensive schemes will use different looks or formations over the course of the game. Much of that is predicated on down and distance, which alters players brought into and out of the huddle on the offensive side of the football. That is augmented by what players the defense has or does not have on the field. No matter what offense strategy a team uses, which could be one of many variations of the West Coast or now defunct Run and Shoot, they will employ many different formation and personnel packages within that strategy. By so doing the offense will eventually confuse the defense and end up with mistmatches somewhere on the line of scrimmage, as it pertains to their skill position players, and attempt to exploit them immediately.

New systems usually stand out till teams adjust. Dallas and Patriots are going to go with two TE and two WR sets this year. Defenses are set up for 4 & 5 WRs now and are going to have problems with large TEs or so Parcells believes (via interview on Sirrius). I believe there was also an article on NFL.com on the Bill & Bill plan.

By the way the Pack is going hybrid with a West Coast Pass attack and Zone Block running game.

Mike Shannahan / Mike Holgrum mix.
