Office Closed due to Cold? (1 Viewer)

Those of you who work in an office, are you closed today for the cold?

We are in the suburbs of Chicago and it's colder than a witches ### here but we work in a climate controlled office. The roads are clear of snow, it's just really freaking cold. I'm hearing some grumbling around that office that we should have taken the day off.

I can understand if our offices were downtown and people were taking public transportation or riding their bikes into the office, but that's not the case.

I'm in the office today. Wife's workplace called off due to cold. Currently, wind chill is -41 here. We also had freezing rain on Friday night so all roads in the area are pretty much like an ice rink.

My buddy drives truck.. he called his boss last night to see if they were going to be open today...

His boss's response..

"Dan, this isn't High School"

Chicago suburbs too. It was -15 degrees a bit ago. Open. Not much traffic on the way to work although I saw 3 accidents. Too cold for the salt to work right on the ice. I shoveled my driveway before work. It really didn't feel as cold as I thought it would.

It's freaking freezing here by new jersey standards and the higher ups are clearly not interested in effective climate control. The women here are shivering at their desks.

But there's no way we would ever actually close due to the cold

-33 windchill and im in today ... though our office is "officially" closed today and tomorrow -- we have about 70% of our people here.

Our office is closed tomorrow. Rumor around the office is that our CEO must have gotten laid or something.

Friends of mine work at 3M in Minnesota and they all received emails to either work from home or take a vacation day. No one was suppose to go into work.

I work from home on Tuesdays and Thursday any ways so my manager, who lives in Florida, told me to work from home until at least Wednesday.

BTW, this morning he compared our Wind Chill( -55) to his air temperature and told me it was 100 degree difference

I work close to that site and the official word was "do what you have to do." Office is open, but not many are around.

It was in the low teens here on The Island Saturday morning.

It was 50 degrees this AM when I got up @ 5:45. Most of the snow had "disappeared."

It will be 10 degrees tomorrow morning.

:(

-16 wind chill here which is among the coldest I've ever seen here in Memphis. We're all working. Unless the roads are actually really dangerous due to ice, I see no reason to close down shop.

Wussification of America continues
If the Europeans can take a month off in August, we can close a couple days a year for snow and ice. With technology, it isn't even as big of a deal anymore as so many can be relatively productive from home.

I'm genuinely shocked at how few people are in the office today. Most of the people who stayed home live less than two miles from our building.

-1, -25 with wind chill. We stay open 24/7, regardless of weather.

I do look forward to getting out of the cold tonight by going to the ice house to do some curling.

A couple different issues here. Snow and ice I agree. Cold, no. That's wussy. And I'm an advocate for more work from home, more vacation, less hours, etc. in the US...just not when the excuse is that it's cold.

WAAAY colder than I expected here, but the office is still open.

It's 63 and cloudy right now, but that's down from 79 and sunny yesterday. I might put a jacket on to go out to a lunch here in a bit. Brrr.

I have a relative that works at the 3M HQ. The actual email indicated the main HQ office and a few other locations nearby were closed, but several of the buildings in the suburbs were to remain open and employees were urged to make safety a priority.

Ok, we got a foot of snow yesterday, that is the reason everything was closed in Michigan. We are supposed to get another 2 inches tonight, with 30 mph winds which will make blowing snow seem like it's still snowing and the -30 windchill is just icing.

Take this to another thread.

Yeah, but if I have to choose between the occasional life-threatening polar vortex and having to live in the same state as MOP, I'm putting on my parka and bundling up every time.

I haven't been outside since I got to work in Florham Park this AM at like 8:30. It was in the mid-40's and raining then...is it THAT much colder out now?

I'm genuinely worried about ice. After all the snow, then the rain and melting, now it's going to get crazy cold...roads are going to be ice rinks.

I received a text last night from someone who lives 1 block from our office last night asking if we were working. Literally one block. On the same street as our office building.

It's 24 degrees here. I'm in the Atlanta burbs. It's rare that we ever have a high temperature below freezing, so this is unbearable for these people. There's been no precipitation, but the schools in my county are closed.

Just because he lives a block away, doesn't mean the office is going to be open. If it is closed, it doesn't really matter his proximity to work.

When the weather is bad, it's always the close ones who work from home. I work for a company outside NYC...we rarely "close," but everyone uses their discretion on when to work from home. I drive ~1 hour, and many drive even farther since we recently relocated from in the city. On those 6" of snow days, it's usually all the road warriors in the office, and the folks who live around the corner are "working remotely." I guess folks who drive a lot are just more tolerant of weather.

Chicago area. I was going to go in, but everyone else sent emails they were working from home so I figured I'd just stay home too.

Me and many friends I know in Chicago were advised to work from home today. I think the temps really come into play with the folks that take public transportation. Chicago's busses and trains don't exactly work with Swiss precision, so there's a lot of outdoor waiting, which is ill-advised. Lots of people decided to drive in today and there are lines around the block for nearly every public parking garage in the Loop.

Its 30 in Austin today and expected to be about 20 tonight. Its seems we get a few days of this every year, but nothing closes unless we get ice on the roads every other year. Just remember the 4 P's: People, Pets, Plants and Pipes, which is included in every weather story right now.

:goodposting: Yep. Gonna be 7 or so tonight. Incredibly cold for us here in the Atlanta area but I don't see the need to close schools today and some have already said they'll be closed tomorrow, too.

Here's his text: Hey sublimeone, was just checking to see if we work tomorrow. I see a bunch of places are going to be closed plus it's like -20 plus snow.
