SANTA ANA, Calif. - Two former Fullerton police officers were found not guilty Monday in the beating death of homeless man Kelly Thomas, reports CBS Los Angeles.

After two days of deliberation, a jury of eight women and four men acquitted former officers Manuel Ramos and Jay Cicinelli of all charges in connection with the death of the 37-year-old Thomas, who died on July 5, 2011, after being beaten by as many as six cops.

This is terrible. Kelly Thomas was mentally ill. He was completely disoriented, confused, and calling for his father while they beat him savagely. Anyone who looks at the after pictures can't possibly think this was merely to subdue him. Infuriating.

"It's like a wound you keep opening," said Ron Thomas, who says his son was diagnosed with schizophrenia. "One of the last things, I think, he was able to slowly moan out is: 'Daddy, they're killing me.' I lay there at night and think about that. It'll get you to the point where you can't function and you just cry a lot."

Didn't look like a beating death to me. Looked like they may have caused him breathing problems by being on top of him. Probably caused a heart attack.

Lesson learned on this one: when the cop tells you to put your legs out and hands on your knees, do so. Don't mouth off. You are just asking to get your ### kicked.

You know the guy was mentally disabled, right?

This is not the face of a man who merely had cops on top of him. They ran his picture over at Reason for years. It's abhorrent, disgusting, and NSFW.

It's on the top left. It's the man who has turned completely black (not even blue) from a savage beating. https://www.google.com/#q=kelly+thomas%2C+after+picture

edit* I'm not reflexively anti-cop. I have two cousins who were/are. But this was so over-the-top, and sad, and emotionally disgusting that it brought the first murder charge ever against cops in Orange County. And they should have been found guilty, IMO.

Whoa. That is a beatdown. How the hell was he able to talk with a face like that? He was talking the whole time up until they were basically sitting on him.

Oh and this verdict is not a big surprise if you know anything about the Orange County DA's office when it comes to how they handle complaints against the police.

I don't know much about the OC and the DA's office, but it doesn't surprise me. The sad part is it actually -- seemingly miraculously -- got to the jury, and they saw fit to acquit the...I won't even call them policemen.

Prosecutors probably presented a lousy case on purpose

I have 3 sons. Listening to that... Was most disturbing.

If that was my son I would be reeeeally hard pressed not to exact my pound of flesh.

Slightly hyperbolic, but I think fair: The news today caused me to go back and read the Declaration of Independence. When our hired guardians treat us like this???

There are two things that are in dire need of addressing this year:

The entitlement that cops feel in how they can treat citizens (only way is for these guys or cops like them to serve life)

The entitlement that gun owners feel to solve disputes by shooting people

along with everything else of course

Ugh. Could have done without reading that. :(

OC is very conservative as a whole. The joke is that when you drive there you're "going behind the Orange Curtain". Some of the most crackpot conservative lawmakers are or have been from there, like Dornan for example.

B-1 Bob is OC? I didn't know that. But I did know it was very conservative. I used to be a political race-horse guy, so I know the OC is Reagan territory. (NB: I'm conservative/libertarian, so the anti-cop thing doesn't viscerally get me immediately). This is just a whole 'nother ball of wax, seemingly (see? I even word that cautiously). It's just -- I mean, we're not hiring the ####### gestapo.

Congrats on being a total ###hole.

Seems like out-of-control police always get found not guilty in these trials. Have to wonder if their brothers in blue are letting the jury know which way they want to vote.

if you watch the full video, you see that the officers thought he was high on something. they also said that the guy continued to fight and that it took several of them to subdue him. they also say the homeless man was trying to bite them and that he actually bite one of the officers on the leg. you can see that they try to taser him at least twice and that he continue to "fight" (you can't see what is happening, just hear them saying over and over and over and over again for him to relax and stop resisting. one of the cops say that after the taser didn't work and he kept fighting that they hit him several times with the base of the taser.

i don't have all the details except what i just watched, but it certainly isn't as cut and dry as it seems, imo.

now, did the cops create this mess in the 1st place? perhaps they did. but at least based on the text being displayed, the guy did keep fighting.

awful all around.

They always yell out "hes on something" to make it look justified. It is not something they could possibly know.

Kelly thomas and his condition was well known to law enforcement in the area and he had many run ins with them......probably hassled repeatedly by these same cops

It doesnt take a genius to realize a filthy, shirtless, shoeless man who hasnt shaved in god knows how long has mental problems. Those cops are thugs looking to get their rocks off beating up on someone weaker. They are predators

I dont know what video you watched but it clearly is that cut and dry

This Ramos guy was simply fed up with having to respond to calls involving this guy. Like "Legs in front of you" is so damn obvious. "Legs in front of you...hands on your knees..." You can see that Thomas is simply trying to do both like he was following individual commands. Ramos makes it like he is screwing with him...

When they were all piled on top of him they kept telling him to put his right arm behind his back- all the while laying on him and making it impossible. They tased him 5 times. No one can simply relax through that. Listen to that poor ******* cry out for his daddy and tell me he wasn't doing anything more than trying to survive. "Dude, I'm sorry...", "I'm sorry, Sir...", "Helllp!"..., "Daaad, they're killing meee..."

####### unbelievable. Just ####### unbelievable.

Can I be the first to be outraged by this without knowing all of the details?

F-ING PIGS!
Dude, if you watch that video and your first thought is "I need to know what happened before those six cops beat that defenseless man to death over a period 15 minutes" there's something seriously wrong with you.

I'm astounded that a jury could come to this conclusion after seeing that video. It defies belief.
I'm sure there was some influence happening out of sight. It's the only plausible explanation. Really sickening.
If that was so, you'd like to think at least one of them would have the balls to stand up to it. It's more likely, IMO, that a couple of jurors wanted to find them guilty but were beaten down by the others. The motivation to get jury duty over and done with and get back to work is economic - people lose money serving on juries.

And whatever, it's a homeless guy, right? Never gonna happen to me, my family or friends. Or that's how the thinking goes.

The laws are designed to protect the police first. All they have to do is tell the jury that they "felt threatened" and they can pretty much get away with anything.

"He's bleeding pretty good."

"Yeah."

...

"They hit him, they hit him in his head."

"Huh?"

"Hit his head."

"He got facial injuries."

...

"We ran out of options, so I got the end of my taser and I probably... I just started smashing his face to hell."

"Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

Unfortunately, in some situations, the police think they have absolute power.

The shame of it is they are trained to act this way.. Not by the police academy, but by their fellow officers.. It becomes programing.. They hear stories, they are told how to get back at guys they don't like, they are taught how to provoke the responses they need in order to act, they are taught how to cover their asses at all times...

Sure, there are plenty of good guys, with good intentions, but evil lies in the heart of every man.
