***Official*** 2009 Washington Redskins Thread (1 Viewer)

Most NFL teams would experience a drop-off in line play if they lost their starting right guard and left tackle. But the Redskins now have three players starting along their line (Williams, Batiste and ineffective right tackle Stephon Heyer) who might not even make most rosters. We'll find out more about Samuels's health this week, but how bad is Rinehart?

Exactly. "How bad is Rinehart?" This is unreal.

The sunshine just got beaten out of Joe Theisman. These are quotes from him this morning.

* "I'm not gonna get into a bunch of statistics this morning, because your eyes and my eyes tell me what's going on. This is not a good offensive football team."* "You know how they got [their lead]? They had a [13]-yard touchdown drive and a one-yard touchdown drive. Two drives, 14 points, total [14] yards. That's disgusting. It's disgraceful. It's, um, it's not professional football. And it's unacceptable, to be perfectly honest with you."* Brian Orakpo is "a work in progress. Seems like this whole football team's a work in progress, to be honest with you. He was trailing the tight end. He's a very effective pass rusher. He is not a very good linebacker at this point. And it seems like this football team is a constant work in progress."* "There were high expectations for this football team. Now, I think if you're a Redskins fan, all you would like to see is 60 good hard minutes of football on either side. And really don't care, to be honest with you, really don't care what the outcome's gonna be. I mean, the important thing is is they go out and play hard."* "I mean, DeAngelo Hall is a Pro Bowl corner. Jake Delhomme faked him out and got a first down. If that doesn't insult me for the rest of the year, to set my jaw and prove that I'm much better than you've seen, I don't know what will. When somebody embarrasses you, that's when you really rise to the occasion."* "Wasted timeouts. Eight minutes to go in the game, the Redskins have no timeouts."* "The offensive line is in shambles."* "I'm not familiar with the West Coast system as far as an offense goes, I know it has to do with getting people out. I've always been of the school of protection first. So if you have to keep a back in, if you have to keep a tight end in, and you run three-receiver routes, then that's what you do, but you give your quarterback a chance to be able to make plays. That's something that did not happen for the Redskins."

Honestly, I give up. Watching the Skins on Sunday used to be one of the highlights of my week, win or lose. They usually gave me -something- to look forward to. They'd lose fighting, or at least show moments of brilliance.

This season, it reminds me of Norv Turner's time with the Skins. The team just looks so uninspired. The offensive line can't stay healthy (what else is new), Sellers is having issues, Portis is fighting with Sellers, the WR's still are mediocre. Chris Cooley is one of the few "bright" spots, but with the OL hurt, he's got to stay in and block more. Jason Campbell...well, he looks horrible IMO. He's a deer in the headlights. His ability to go through his progressions without being spooked by the rush has gotten worse, and in general his instincts are just bad this season. He reminds me of Patrick Ramsey the year his line was horrible. The only difference is when Ramsey got spooked, he'd fire into triple coverage, where as Campbell will just take a sack.

The defense is a huge let down as well. I feel like we've given up 5 yard hook patterns for YEARS. I really think a team could run that play all the way down the field. Rogers especially seems to love lining up 12 yards off the WR. And I swear, if I see Albert Hainesworth's $100 million large ### laying on the ground like a worthless sack of crap one more time, I'm gonna kick my TV over. I don't know if he's lazy or what, but he can go from laying prone on the field, looking dead, and making faces like he doesn't know what planet he's on to beating double-teams to blow up a play in the backfield in 10 seconds flat, and it's just annoying.

I have truthfully not watched a full game since week 1 becuase even when they win, it's the ugliest thing I've seen from the Redskins in a LONG time. I just switch to NASCAR, where at least I don't want to throw things at the TV.

OK, rant over. I had to do that.

There's a better way to say this: He's not a LB. He shouldn't be playing LB. He shouldn't be in coverage. To say he's a work in progress is to say that one day he'll be successfully covering TEs. I guess that's a possibility, but I don't think it's something most teams would ever find out because they wouldn't use him that way.

Brian Orakpo is playing LB for only one reason, because Vinnie thinks he can and when he goes to the Pro Bowl as a LB/DE hybrid, everyone will say "Man, that Vinnie Cerrato is a genius!" That's the same reason Mike Williams is on the team and now playing RG. Because Vinnie wants to take credit for a rehabilitation project and bringing a guy back from the dead.

Well at least the local media is awake to the personnel deficiencies now and is pointing the blame where it belongs.

Dan Daly, Washington Times

Most games are lost on the playing field, but occasionally you'll see one that's lost in the boardroom. The Redskins' 20-17 defeat at Carolina on Sunday is a classic example of the latter. Indeed, it stands as a monument to the dubious decision-making that has marked the Dan Snyder Era.
You're not going anywhere in the NFL with veritable novices at two line positions - with a right guard who had to speed-read the playbook to get ready for the game and a left tackle who, developmentally, is still at Square One. It's an invitation to disaster. Heck, it's an invitation to having your quarterback wheeled off on a gurney. You just can't allow yourself to get in that situation.

But the Redskins have - through sheer neglect and a warped sense of priorities. Sure, Haynesworth was a sexy signing, but it came at the expense of, among other things, better depth on the O-line. Granted, no club can totally prepare itself for every eventuality. There are always going to be places on the roster that are a bit thin, places where management is just crossing its fingers and hoping for the best.

But one of those places should never be the offensive line; it's too darn important. If you don't have a workable line, the offense ceases to function - as we were reminded again Sunday.

Do you guys realize how long it is until the end of the season?

I just wish this crap was over now, but it's going to take forever to play out and get worse.

I totally agree...we're 1/4 of the way through! All this talk of Zorn getting fired and all doesn't help. As much as I agree Cerrato is the problem, changing head coaches to pass the blame mid-season isn't the way to go, but I don't think keeping Zorn is either. Regardless of how badly we need change in many parts of the organization, I think it's going to have to wait till the off-season, which can't come soon enough.

Sadly, every one knows where the problem is, and it's the one thing that is least likely to change. Until Snyder completely disengages from football operations, this team will continue to be a trainwreck. You would think after over a decade of futlity there would at least be some signs of learning or progress, but if anything the trend is going in the other direction.

From a fan's perspective, there is really only one way to affect change. If a company is giving you an inferior product, you have to reject it as a consumer. So I reject the Daniel Snyder Redskins. Until Cerrato is gone completely from the organization and someone is broguht in with 100% authority on football decisions, I won't spend a dime on the organization or team sponsors.

:boycott:

At least the ineptitudinal, dysfuntional suckiness of my fantasy team helps take a little of the edge off of paying good money for NFL Ticket just to watch the ineptitudinal, dysfuntional suckiness that is mismanaged product of the meddeling jock sniffers Snyderatto. The depths will be plumbed this comming Sunday.

Unfortunately it's a very tall order to starve one of the most lucrative and valuable sports teams in the world into submission. It's not like the Jags who start to squirm with lesser attendance at their stadium. But, all of my well wishes to you, sir.

I think it's going to happen naturally over time anyway. Sustained mediocrity will eventually lead to apathy, which will lead to empty stadiums and dwindling revenue. No doubt there will be PR stunts along the way to try to sustain interest and revenue, because that's what Danny knows. I'm just suggesting a more proactive approach. I don't know what the Redskins balance sheet looks like, but they obviously have huge operating exenses. A realtively small dip in revenue, even 5-10% in an already challenging economy would likely be a significant financial blow.

Zorn said Samuels is out Sunday.

In his place, Stephon Heyer is expected to move from right tackle to left, and Mike Williams will line up at right tackle. Chad Rinehart will likely return to the starting lineup as the Redskins' right guard.

Carlos Rogers, from the Redskins' open locker room:"It starts not only with players and coaches, it starts with the ownership. They bring everybody in and they've got last say-so of everything, so that's where it starts, I guess." (via @RickMaese on Twitter).

That should work out.
KC Defense = Shark move?
I think I heard them say during the KC-Dallas game that the Cheifs only have 15 sacks since the start of the 2008 season. I'm guessing that stat is going to rise substantially next week.

"The guy that I'm concerned about is Chris Samuels," Zorn said. "He got an MRI. He's been playing with a Stenosis, which is a narrowing [of the spine]. ... He got popped and he got some tingling and we're just checking this out. Right now, he will not be available to play this week just to quiet this thing down."
Jason ReidIsn't that what ended Priest Holmes's career?

he (Rinehart) struggled in pass protection and the running game
Heyer has performed poorly overall since the opening loss to the New York Giants.
D'Anthony Batiste, Samuels's replacement on Sunday, was overmatched in pass protection from the outset.
Williams.... ......was elevated above Rinehart because the Redskins wanted a bigger body at the position for the running game. Williams definitely qualifies, but his pass protection was no better than anyone else's.
All from Jason Reid.I'm even beginning to feel sorry for Zorn right now.
"You can only do what you have right now," Zorn said. "Even during the game, we could do what we could do. My responsibility, and it really is my responsibility, is to even have that work."

Yes, and Michael Irvin's. Working in Samuels' favor, however, is the has fewer high speed collisions that would hurt the spine than does a RB or WR.

Did any of you guys see Denver beat the Pats? When is the last time we had a coach all jacked up like Josh? Why cant we get this, I want someone to show some emotion on this team, and not Carlos Rodgers when he should pick off a pass dance because he knocked it down.

I feel fatness's yearning for the offseason, and I'm hoping for the Zorn firing for a small little slice of the offseason during this heinous season. This is disgraceful and just plain hard to watch.

As a Redskins fan living in Baltimore, it's getting harder and harder to remain a fan. (Has nothing to do with the Ravens either) Most of the games get blacked out here and there is a piss poor product on the field. I used to go to at least 3 or 4 games a year, but I haven't been to a single one in the past few years. I was at FedEx for the U2 concert the other week and forgot what a horrible stadium it is.

I find out on Friday what sex my first born is going to be. If it's a boy, I can't promise I'll raise him a Redskins fan.

When I saw McDaniels running around Invesco Field applauding the crowd, I thought, "I can only wish we could have an experience like that in FedEx Field."

So, I just heard some of the Zorn PC. After saying that Heyer will likely move to LT and Williams will play RT, a reporter asked, "With this OL, how can you run anything?" :moneybag:

Pathetic, pathetic, pathetic, pathetic.
Oh, you must be talking about Sellers now. I heard about his block on the DET game, but never really went back to look at it and then the safety play vs. CAR. Sellers is way to BIG to be stepping sideways opposed to cleaning out whatever is infront of him. Sellers looks like a BIG piece of turd, except that log has a #45 on it. Can someone please flush it, so that we can be done with watching it and having to smell it?

I'd like a word with our personnel department.

But with Heyer struggling in pass protection and run blocking on the right side and backup tackle D'Anthony Batiste performing similarly on the left side, it quickly became apparent Samuels must have been in significant pain not to re-enter the game.

On the Redskins' first four pass attempts in the game, Campbell was sacked three times. Washington's offensive line was in disarray and Samuels, a co-captain on offense, remained seated on the bench while speaking with teammates and a member of the team medical staff.
Zorn called a quarterback sneak on first down that resulted in a two-yard gain for Campbell. But on second down, Zorn tried a sweep to the right side behind Heyer. Tight end Chris Cooley helped on Heyer's side, but Peppers pushed back Heyer into the end zone and Portis was brought down for the safety.

Well, yeah, but we've got the highest paid DT in league history who only plays about 60% of all plays on defense and two wide outs who never catch the ball and a TE who likes to jump over defenders and then fumbles when he comes down. Who needs O-linemen?
You forgot to add that we have a FB that just got paid w/ a new contract, but now doesn't want to block or can't run North & South anymore. Someone needs to give that turd a compass and white out the East & West on it...maybe then he'd figure out which direction he's supposed to move in.No wonder Portis felt it was bad enough to ask for him to be replaced.

They're going to figure out some way to beat KC next week. Not by much, of course. It'll be like a 17-13 win. And then the wheels will really start to fall off. They'll start to get blown out. Everything will fall apart. It's going to get uglier.
Are you sure you want to go out on a limp on that Chiefs victory. Sure the Chiefs are 0 for season but I would hardly put them in the Browns, Rams, or Bucs category. They played tough against the Cowboys and Ravens. Plus all you have to do is look at the fact that Skins have helped TWO teams break the 0 for season skid.
LMAO, out on a limb....not a limp!!!! I get what you are saying and I agree, I won't say that the 'Skins will beat the Chiefs as I predicted that Chiefs would win a few post earlier. Again, it's limb not limp! Thanks for bringing a smile and laugh though during this crazy time.

Do you guys realize how long it is until the end of the season? I just wish this crap was over now, but it's going to take forever to play out and get worse.
I disagree, I think the reason it's as shocking and a whirlwind of sorts is that we are all getting slapped in the face with reality. Once it turly sets in that we are horrible, the expectations will not be there and the let down will not be as great. We still are not that far removed from the homer in all of us that were thinking of 9-7 to 12-4 type season projections. Each game becomes less shocking as the expectations are not being set as high...pretty soon there will be none.

I've never understood this common coaching logic. Zorn on challenging the "muffed punt":

"I could have saved the timeout," Zorn said. "But gosh, it was worth it for me to challenge that one. I mean, that was a key play in the game. I wasn't going to save a timeout for that. It was my duty, in my mind, to challenge that one."
No, Zorn, it actually is NOT your duty to challenge a play that clearly has no chance of winning. Timeouts are kind of valuable.

The more I watch football, the sicker I feel. The excitement buy Denver's coach. The wildcat that Miami does, when we have one of the better player in ARE to play it. Henne, and Sanchez airing it out. And we get to watch old big ten football every week. :coffee:

Lavar Arrington show had a beat writer for the skins on today, and his sources say Gruden will be the Skins next coach, thoughts? :goodposting:
Sucks!!! I live in Central Florida and had to hear him as the TB coach...YUCK!!!! Get ready for 12 QB's and none worthy of starting. Hey the good news is that Jeff Garcia is still available and he's only 37-38 yrs old....maybe Rich Gannon can come out of retirement too.

Hi. My name is Dan Snyder and I decided to write to this forum to address some issues you all have brought up.

First, if you want to blame the talent on this team, you need to blame Joe Gibbs and Jim Zorn, and not me or Vinnie. On offense, I never would have chosen Brunell or Campbell like Gibbs did. I never would have said I could coach Campbell up like Zorn told me. I would have traded for Cutler or drafted Sanchez or Stafford. A couple of years ago, I would have signed Romo, Schaub or Farve. So clearly I know QBs better than these so called coaches. I never would have picked up 2 wrs and a te last year either. The west coast system of Zorn forced Vinnie there, and thanks to Zorn's whining I have talentless wrs. I wanted to pick up braylon edwards or brandon marshall this season, but the fans and media keep making fun of me picking up too many free agents, so I relented and look what happened. I could have traded our next two #1s for these all-pros. Zorn also double crossed me. He said he would establish a pssing game. If he did, Portis would be running for 2000 yards with the defense all spread out. I mean, Portis got 1300/year under Gibbs' boring offense. Some of you have suggested there a problems with the OL. I don't see how. If those wrs Zorn wanted were open faster and Campbell was better, the OL would just need to hold up for the 2 seconds of protection they currently give.

To address our defensive woes, picking up Hall and Haynesworth was genius too. Hall is a lockdown corner that is suffering from not enough pressure. Haynesworth has really blown up teams running against us and he media said I need a force on the line. I should have picked up another DE in free agency. If I had traded our #1 the next 3 years, I would have clearly picked up Jared Allen. Man, we'd have the best D in the league. Blatche is screwing me. He swore he'd bring pressure. I mean, we were the #4 defense the past couple of years. You'd think 1 stud DL would make us #1. I want Orakpo at DE just like you. Blatche says we'd have no OLB. Maybe he should just run a 2 LB defense.

You say I've screwed up coaching moves, but each move was approved by groups supposedly smarter than me. Spurrier was the next great HC and tons of teams wanted him. Gibbs was heralded by the fans. When he left, he told me he thought Zorn would be a great HC. He thought so much of him, he never even spoke with him. Marty was a media darling and went 8-8, and I just couldn't have mediocrity in here. I have spared no expense on these coaches.

All my decisions the last 4-5 years have been based on what fans and the media wanted, and look where I am now. Clearly I am a better judge of talent that you all and these NFL experts. From now on I'm going to run this organization with an iron hand. Next year we are getting a QB. Then I'll pick a new HC. Then I'll tell Vinnie who to pickup in FA that will fix all our problems. So argue with me all you like, but this is my team and Vinnie and I will fix our problems now that the fans and the media have dug this hole for me.

 Do you have a few dollars I can have Mr Synder?

I was thinking the same thing last night. I watched the Jets call an aggressive offense with a rookie QB and a WR that was just added to the team last week. And, I watched Miami's innovative offense being called by a 100 year old man from part of our glory days.

Lavar Arrington show had a beat writer for the skins on today, and his sources say Gruden will be the Skins next coach, thoughts? :goodposting:

No chance Snyder would bring in Gruden and allow him to use a lemon. If Gruden comes here, Snyder will make sure he has a nice, new, shiny toy to play with at QB. He'll probably even go to insane lengths to make that happen. It will be interesting to hear what Gruden has to say about Jason Campbell and the Redskins as a whole when they play Philly on MNF in a couple weeks.

Here's Rick Snider's column about Gruden:

Jon Gruden appears to be the frontrunner in Dan Snyder's offseason search for his seventh coach in 11 seasons.

Sources close to Snyder say he began considering options to replace coach Jim Zorn after losing to Detroit on Sept. 27; a victory that ended the Lions' 19-game losing streak. The Redskins loss to Carolina on Sunday was its second in three games to a winless team. It followed a turbulent week when Snyder hired an "offensive consultant" to give Zorn another "fresh set of eyes" on a beleaguered offense.

Snyder has not contacted Gruden, say sources, but he believes the former Oakland-Tampa Bay coach might be the best fit among five Super Bowl winning coaches without jobs. Gruden currently is a Monday Night Football commentator who arrives in Washington for the Redskins-Philadelphia Eagles game on Oct. 26. Snyder and Gruden could meet during routine pregame research for the MNF program.

Meanwhile, Snyder's interest seems to have tempered for former Denver coach Mike Shanahan, once considered the frontrunner because of his long relationship with Redskins executive vice president Vinny Cerrato. Sources won't rule out Shanahan, but the latter's demand for more front office control makes it a less-likely hire. NFL sources say the two have discussed the job.

Sources close to Gruden said he plans to resume a coaching job search at season's end in his first break since becoming a college assistant in 1986. Gruden spent five years at three colleges before one season on offensive coordinator Mike Holmgren's San Francisco staff in 1990. After coaching receivers at the University of Pittsburgh in 1991, Gruden worked three years as a Green Bay assistant before becoming Philadelphia's offensive coordinator from 1995-97.

Gruden became the Oakland Raiders head coach in 1998, reaching the playoffs three of four seasons under controversial owner Al Davis. Gruden then coached Tampa Bay for seven years, wining Super Bowl XXXVIII in his first season with the Buccaneers.

After missing the playoffs four of his final six years, including finishing 9-7 last season, Gruden was fired with three years remaining on his contract. He has since declined an offer to become the University of Oregon's offensive coordinator.

Sources close to Gruden say he's interested in the Redskins because of Snyder's free spending. Gruden felt undermined by Tampa Bay owners because they were $45 million under the salary cap in his final season. The NFL won't have a salary cap next year, leaving Snyder to spend freely for the free agents that Gruden prefers.

Snyder is seeking is a candidate willing to leave major personnel decisions to Cerrato and the owner. NFL sources close to Gruden said that's not an expected deal breaker.

"When the guy has worked in the worst environment in football in Al Davis, he'll not see this as a problem," an NFL source said. "Gruden really wants to coach."

Snyder also has considered former Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher and Holmgren, who won a title with Green Bay. The final available Super Bowl-winning coach - Tony Dungy - is expected to remain retired after leaving Indianapolis this year.

Cowher has long been Snyder's first choice, but NFL sources say the Steelers coach turned down the Redskins in 2007 before Zorn was hired and prefers to remain in broadcasting . Holmgren teased interest in an East Coast job and is expected to be pursued by several teams, including Dallas.

Indeed, Snyder's aggressive pursuit of coaches in coming weeks is partly to beat Dallas owner Jerry Jones to the top candidate should the Cowboys part with Wade Phillips.

Snyder has learned to be more proactive following the unexpected departures of Steve Spurrier (2003) and Joe Gibbs (2007). Snyder was completely surprised by Gibbs' retirement despite the latter indicating it in the weeks following Sean Taylor's murder. Gibbs quit two days after being eliminated in the opening round of the playoffs. Snyder met with a series of candidates before promoting Zorn from offensive coordinator.

Snyder was ready for the 2002 search after one season with Marty Schottenheimer, who also was team president. Snyder disliked not participating in personnel decisions for the only time since buying the team in 1999. A heated argument developed between Schottenheimer and Snyder's then minority partner, Fred Drasner, after one member of the coaching staff wouldn't let Drasner use a team vehicle. This, coupled with an 0-5 start, saw Snyder preparing for a switch in September. Schottenheimer was dismissed despite finishing 8-8.

The more I watch football, the sicker I feel. The excitement buy Denver's coach. The wildcat that Miami does, when we have one of the better player in ARE to play it. Henne, and Sanchez airing it out. And we get to watch old big ten football every week.
I was thinking the same thing last night. I watched the Jets call an aggressive offense with a rookie QB and a WR that was just added to the team last week. And, I watched Miami's innovative offense being called by a 100 year old man from part of our glory days.
:goodposting: I was watching the game last night and contemplating jumping on another team's bandwagon for awhile, just so I'd have something interesting to watch/root for this season. I really like what the Jets are doing this year, on both sides of the ball.

Gruden RAVES about the wildcat. I heard him say a couple weeks ago that he spends hours and hours studying the wildcat.
