Mike Klis reporting Ryan Clady injured a patella during non-football activity. "Could be serious."
Ryan Clady suffers non-football related injuryPosted by Gregg Rosenthal on April 28, 2010 2:31 PM ETThis is one of those posts where the headline pretty much tells the entire story.Mike Klis of the Denver Post writes that Broncos Pro Bowl tackle Ryan Clady suffered a non-football injury to a patella tendon in one of his knees. The severity is unknown. No other information is available at this time, so it's tough to gauge whether this is a big story or not. We'll let you know once we hear more.UPDATE: The injury "could be serious" according to Klis.

I'm really looking forward to training camp now. No more cloud of cutler, no Marshall drama...it feels good to have all of the negativity finally behind us. From here on out, things should only be trending up :knocksonwood:From here on out, it's positive things only: the progression of the new WR's, the excitement that Tebow brings, the battles for starting positions along the OL, and how the DL gels. It's an exciting time, and it's refreshing to be looking forward to the season again.
I too am excited about camp. It is basically McDaniels team now. I have low expectations as far as a W/L record but the AFC West could be open this year as SD is sort of retooling here and there. The Clady injury could be huge--I am hoping it is not serious. To me one of the big stories that is being overshadowed by the QB issues, is the plan to go to a power running game. I just can't quite figure out how that is going to happen with the RBs Denver currently has. Moreno has talent, but I always see him as more of a slashing out in the flat type back. He needs to work on his balance. I can't count the number of plays last year that he seemed to just magically lose his cutting foot and would go down on his own. Buckhalter seems to have the injury bug and I am guessing the team is going to be bringing in more FA Rbs. Anyone got any other ideas?

This has been bugging me too. Behind Moreno are what, Buck who is good when healthy but rarely healthy and JJ Arringtonwho is a huge question mark. With the retooled OL, the retooled WR and now Clady hurt I'm not sure what to expect from the offense. I certainly expected a RB somewhere during the draft though. They picked up a couple UDFA RBs though. Hopefully one pans out because the position is dangerously thin right now.

It took two drafts and another week of intense concentration to follow the Broncos' bouncing draft picks, but the results are in on the Jay Cutler trade.

Here's what the Broncos got: starting quarterback Kyle Orton, starting outside linebacker Robert Ayers, first-round receiver Demaryius Thomas, third-round receiver Eric Decker, one-half of tight end Richard Quinn (Bears' draft pick plus one more to get him) and one-third of quarterback Tim Tebow (draft pick plus two more).

Yep, check back in 5 years or so...then we will have a winner or loser, or two losers...which I fear will be the case!

John Elway, reflects on reaching 50

Still, he does not just enter a room. He engulfs it. Everything stops. Everyone looks. There is an aura of reverence, as if royalty has arrived. He is the Duke of Denver. He is the Comeback Quarterback. He is the Man with the Midas Arm. He is the champion, the Hall of Famer. He is the town's most celebrated celebrity. He is the most iconic sports figure in Colorado history. He is good ol' No. 7.

John Elway seemingly is immortal.

Yet, he turns 50 and the corner on Monday.

"I've got to be totally honest. I was watching TV when John Wooden recently died, and in an interview they had asked him if he was afraid of dying, and he said, 'Absolutely not.' That was the very first time in my life I asked myself, 'Would you

be afraid to die?' I can't answer yes or no, but, reaching 50, I've started to conjure up thoughts of my own mortality."

Now, he introspectively looks back at a remarkable half-century and ahead to an expectant future.

"With luck and hard work, I've achieved a lot in my life so far, but I've still got a lot more I want to do," Elway told The Denver Post in a lengthy conversation at Elway's restaurant in Cherry Creek.

Elway's bucket list includes playing the bad guy in a cowboy movie, driving a stock car on a local track, biking the Ride The Rockies, traveling to Italy again (where he proposed to his wife of 10 months, Paige), playing in a seniors golf tournament, visiting the historic World War II beach site at Normandy, watching his four children graduate from college (the oldest has earned a master's degree, and the other three are attending different universities), doing dozens of new business deals, growing the restaurants he co-owns and . . .

Reuniting with the Broncos.

Elway's association with the team he carried to five Super Bowls, winning two, has been strained the past several years. But he recently bonded with second-year coach Josh McDaniels and rookie quarterback Tim Tebow, and reconnected with owner Pat Bowlen. He has agreed to help the Broncos market this season's game in London and attend training- camp practices.

He hopes to become an untitled adviser to, and part-time coach for, the Broncos, offering "the experience and knowledge I have about football."

Eventually, Elway would like to own a piece of the franchise, which appeared a certainty when he retired after the 1998 season.

"That's always a possibility, but it really depends on what Pat's going to do. Would I like to be a part owner? Yes. I'd like for it to happen here. If not, and there is an opportunity somewhere else, I'd definitely look at that, too."

There has been plenty of life after the Broncos for Elway.

"I've been a gunslinger in business, just like I was in football. I look at a proposition, consider if I think it will be a winner, and I make my investment. I've always been a risk-taker. You make your best educated guess, and it might fail. But there have been highfliers. I don't want to just lend my name to a product or a company. I want to be part of winning or losing."

Elway had a colossal financial flop in an Internet sports-equipment partnership with two other sports stars, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky. He was an enormous success with automobile dealerships, which sold for more than $80 million.

"It was a lottery ticket," Elway said.

Elway's two steakhouses are popular and profitable, and he is involvedwith dozens of corporations, endorsements and charities.

"Sometimes you strike out, other times you hit a home run," Elway said, using a baseball analogy. He played two summers in the New York Yankees organization.

He was the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft in 1983 — but refused to play for the Baltimore Colts and forced a trade. The Broncos were beneficiaries.

"I came to Denver permanently on May 2, 1983, and this is my home."

He retired from football May 2, 1999.

Elway was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Aug. 8, 2004. Sports Illustrated has named Elway the greatest athlete to wear No. 7.

An untold story is that in high school in California, Elway wore No. 11, "but, at Stanford, a DB (defensive back) had my favorite number, and I didn't want to ask him for it. All they had were Nos. 12 and 7. I chose 7 because few athletes wore the number."

Now, quarterbacks at every level, including in the NFL, wear No. 7 in honor of Elway.

His jersey was the top seller for the Broncos until there was No. 15 — Tebow, a first-round draft pick this year. They have spent time together — most recently at the birthday party thrown for Elway last week. Tebow was a surprise "gift."

Elway was born June 28, 1960, 11 minutes before sister Jana. His twin, a teacher, died of lung cancer in 2002.

"Jana was 42. The last day of her life she said to me: 'I want to live.' That could have been, and should have been, me instead of her."

What is it like to be John Elway?

"For all the pluses, there are the minuses, and it comes back to the middle. The good and the bad. My father and my sister passing, the divorce (from his first wife, Janet). The three losses in the Super Bowl, then the two victories in the Super Bowl. Health issues. Incredible positive things in my life. Bad decisions.

"If somebody wants an idea of what it's like to be John Elway, every time you go to get gas, be in a drive- through, having dinner out, people are going to come up, get an autograph, ask about the Broncos. And it doesn't matter what kind of mood you're in, or if you're thinking about something in your personal life, you have to become John Elway and turn it on. It's not always easy being John Elway."

But the best part, he says, is being the father of Jessica, Jordan, Jack and Juliana.

Jessica has a master's degree from her father's alma mater, Stanford, gave Elway's introductory speech at the Hall of Fame ceremonies, and now is a kindergarten teacher in Oakland. Jordan is in nursing school at Regis University. Jack is a junior at Arizona State, and gave up playing quarterback after his freshman year. And Juliana is a freshman at Arizona who wants to be a teacher.

In the restaurant, Elway stands before the glass case holding his first orange Broncos jersey and his last blue jersey.

"The blue is my favorite. I never lost one game wearing that home jersey," he said. "Look it up."

Sure enough, after the Broncos switched to blue in 1997, John won every home game in the regular season and the playoffs for his final two years — and the Super Bowl in San Diego.

"I couldn't be happier about my career. I don't know that Joe Montana could have enjoyed his four Super Bowl wins as much as I enjoyed my two because he never lost. The Super Bowl is the ultimate win, but it's also the ultimate loss. The high was higher because I felt the lowest of the low. After we won (the AFC title game in '97) in Pittsburgh, I called my mom and told her we were going back to the Super Bowl. She said: 'Do you really have to?' "

He opens wide and reveals sports' most famous teeth.

"Still all mine," he said. "No caps — even though I hold the NFL record for most times sacked. Look it up."

Sure enough, 516 times.

The blond hair is splattered with gray, and the lines in the face are streams of 50 years. Elway no longer is the 23-year-old kid who flowed into Denver. He's only 10 pounds over his playing weight of 215. His ruined knee has been replaced, and the body is strong.

"I feel great for 50. I just did 100 miles in the Elephant Rock (bike festival), and I ride from my home (in Cherry Hills) downtown and back."

He has that John Wayne saunter that led to the "Duke of Denver" title. "But what I really want to do is be the bad guy in a Western, alongside Kevin Costner."

He doesn't "think much about age, but I just got the notice in the mail that I'm eligible for an AARP card. That reminds you."

Elway acknowledged that he was approached to become a Colorado gubernatorial candidate.

"Politics always intrigued me, and people ask me to run for office. I thought seriously about it because I could give something valuable back to society. But I've been turned off by what's happening in government. I'm a Republican, but I don't necessarily agree with a lot of things they have done, and I don't agree with everything the Democrats do. To me, it's all about getting elected, not what you believe in.

"I've decided, that in politics and charity work, you can get more done behind the scenes than being out front.

"To me, my legacies are my kids and what I did on the field and what I do in my life. That's what my dad taught me.

"I want to die someday as my father did, quickly, sitting on the sofa watching sports on ESPN."

Elway and his family will spend his 50th birthday at his ranch in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Does he understand the meaning of life at 50?

"I always think about the old cowboy Curly in 'City Slickers.'

"He pointed his finger and said: 'Do you know what the secret of life is? One thing. Just one thing.'

"The dude said: 'That's great, but what's the one thing?'

'That's what you gotta figure out.' "

Elway whispered: "Balance."

So, balance is the secret to life? What's that mean?

"I'm trying to figure it out. I'm only 50."

I'm excited for this season. The division is ripe for the taking.

Contrary to what most of the talking heads believe, the 2010 Broncos will be better than the 2009 team. We lost the key playmaker in Marshall and replacing his production, IMO, is the only open item from the O. Of course, with the rest of the team having another year in the system, and a beefed up O-line, all we need is a fraction of production from Bey Bay and Decker. I expect big things from Moreno this year, and I expect Orton to respond well to the QB's brought in to compete On D, I'm praying that we finally will find some success with the turnstile that is the starting DL.

KC is a team struggling to find their place, and IMO they are going backwards. Adding TJones is their key addition and paired w/ Charles, they should be a good duo, but I'm not all that impressed with what they can do via the passing game. KC should be fairly one-dimensional. Their D wil lbe better, but I don't think they are there just yet.

oakland is a team on the way up and good play from their QB will be a huge spark, but I think they are at least a year and a few WR's away.

Which leads us to SD. Here is a team in turmoil, but they pretty much have been for years. The key for SD, as I can tell, is getting their guys in camp, which is looking like trouble. Between Jackson, McNeil and Merriman, SD is gonna struggle to get their act together.

Denver has been maddeningly close to SD for the last few years up until the final stretch of the season. I don't think that the differences between the two teams is that great. If SD loses a couple of pieces and Denver can finally come together, I think that this just may be the year that we can finish strong and take the division.

I'm putting my money where my mouth is. I will be able to fly out for one game this year, and the game I've chosen to go to is week 17, at home vs SD. This game will be our coronation and where we will win the division.

Ain't pre-season great?

MileHighReport via Twitter Injuries to D-Thomas and E-Decker are to the same leg as prior surgeries. That doesn't mean same injuries, obviously, just sayin' #Broncos this is not good news.

even more from MHR ... MileHighReport BTW, no word on Decker and Thomas injuries has come down. We have NO IDEA how serious it is.... #Broncos

Here is your starting line-up (ignoring injuries):

WR1 Brandon Lloyd

LT Ryan Clady

LG Stanley Daniels

C J.D. Walton

RG Chris Kuper

RT Ryan Harris

TE Daniel Graham

WR2 Eddie Royal

WR3 Jabar Gaffney

QB Kyle Orton

FB Spencer Larsen

RB Knowshon Moreno

Looking at the OL: solid at the book ends, questionable in the middle. Hochstein is the main back-up for both guards and center positions. I'm not sure how Beadles fits into this.

A TE: Gronkowski is already ahead of Quinn. I think that this is a situatuion where McD sets up TE2 as a pass-catching TE - Quinns value is more in backing up Graham as a blocking TE.

Demaryius backs up Lloyd, Decker backs up Eddie Royal. not sure who comes in for 4-WR sets.

Tebow is listed as 3rd. It will be interesting to see if they choose to use the emergency QB designation and who it is.

================

LDE Ryan McBean

NT Jamal Williams

RDE Justin Bannan

OLB Jason Hunter

RILB D.J. Williams

LILB Mario Haggan

OLB Robert Ayers

LCB Champ Bailey

SS Renaldo Hill

FS Brian Dawkins

RCB Andre Goodman

Big surprise is that Hunter is ahead of Moss. Word is that Hunter has been looking really good so far and it's more of him doing well than Moss doing poorly. Miss is the only other outside LB, so I expect him to get plenty of PT. That's probably where he's suited best though - come in for a few key situations and turn it loose. I don't think he has the stamina (or heart) to be an every down player, but he can be good in spurts.

Parrish Cox will be the nickel back.

==================================

Special Teams: Royal is listed at #1 for PR and KR. Cox is #2, Willis is #3. I'm suprised to not see Syd'Quan here - I was impressed with what I saw from him.

==================

Going into JAX, I expect the starting O to be:

WR1 Brandon Lloyd

LT Ryan Clady

LG Stanley Daniels

C J.D. Walton

RG Chris Kuper

RT Zane Beadles

TE Daniel Graham

WR2 Eddie Royal

WR3 Jabar Gaffney

QB Kyle Orton

RB Correll Buckhalter

with Harris and Moreno out.

my thoughts on the Jax game:

Denver didn't look terrible. This really wasn't all that bad. IMO, Jax and Denver are about even, the game could have easily gone the other way. A few key moments kept Denver from getting the win. I'm talking about holding calls followed by sacks taking the Broncos out of scoring range, fumbles @ the 25, back-to-back facemask penalties by the same guy, giving up a TD catch with 10 men on the field, and throwing deep on 4th and 3.

Jax played a nearly perfect game. The only mistake they made was going for a 4th and 1 at their own 39, and that's not that bad of a call - just a bit risky.

When two even teams play, the team that makes the fewest mistakes will be the one to win, and that wasn't Denver.

I'm going to attribute most of these mistakes to pre-season rust caused by all of the injuries and the youth. Orton was sacked 3x and the O only had 89 yards rushing - that points to a deficient OL, which probably should have been expected, given two returning starters and two rookies making their NFL debut. Buckhalter - this was his first action of the year, Vickerson was the guy supposed to be on the field during the TD - he's been in camp for what...a week? Denver led in total yards and TOP. They lost on return yards (ST was not very food), penalties, and turnovers, ad ultimately that was the difference in the game. That all comes down to coaching, but when the players are spending more time on the trainers table than the field, he can only do so much.

My point is - these things will get better, and I expect a much better showing next week.

my thoughts on week 2:

a much better, more complete game. Virtually mistake free. Three penalties against for 35 yards, including an unsportsmanlike conduct on Cox's int to seal the game.

Positives:

Passing game is looking sharp. Demaryius Thomas was outstanding, Orton was crisp, Royal was a weapon. Orton threw it deep, he threw it short, he threw to the open man. He may not be the most accurate QB in the business, but he makes very good decisions. Best decision maker I've seen in Denver in a really long time, in terms of finding the open man and not forcing it. Pass blocking was very good.

Pass D was also very good - int's from Champ, Dawkins, and Cox. For the life of me, I can't figure out why people still throw at Champ. It makes no sense. Dude can still play at a high level.

Negatives:

no running game to speak of. I put this on the line as Moreno had no room to operate. When he had a hole, he could get 8,9,10 yards easily, but he lacks the speed to make a small gain into a big gain, but he has enough wiggle to get the small gains consistently IMO.

Run D wasn't very good - Sea gashed the Denver D with some nice cutbacks and running right up the middle. It seems that Jamal Williams isn't quite the blocker-eater he used to be as guards were getting to the LB's pretty easily. Along the same lines - no pressure on Hasselbeck. Dumervil is definitely missed.

punt return coverage was terrible, minus the muff-recovery. for some reason, Denver has always been terrible with staying in their lanes. If it's not Golden Tate, it's Dante Hall or Devin Hester. I can't count how many games Denver's lost because of punt returns either going the distance or giving the opposition a short field.

Downside is Bailey left the stadium on crutches and Goodman has a thigh thing going on...it's possible that Denver will start two rookies at CB vs Manning and the Colts. That can't be good.

Also - RIP McK.

saw this on a Bronco blog - very interesting and informative. Knowshon Moreno run-by-run video breakdown.

video

My takeaway is that Moreno isn't leaving many yards on the field as one might think - we's suffering behind an OL that has been getting run over. @ 5:10 is especially bad.

If it matters to anyone, Kuper and Harris (i.e. the right side of the line) are expected to be back this week vs IND, so that should help things out.

fixed...Harris is doubtful to play.

as disappointed as I was with the outcome, I was actually pretty pleased with the game vs NYJ. 1/2 of the defensive backfield and the best pass rusher (Ayers) missed the game, but they still picked Sanchez 2x. 10 rookies got playing time on Sunday; two of them scoring TD's and another getting a pick.

The O finally found some success on the ground, and Denver showed a toughness and heart that I haven't seen since the 6 game stretch starting the season last year.

Not sure if it's public knowledge or not, but Denver has had the toughest schedule so far, by quite a margin. last 4 games have been vs NYJ, BAL, TEN, and IND...talk about a murderers row. Coming out 1-3 out of that stretch isn't terrible for a team that has no business thinking about going deep in the playoffs.

No team Denver has played so far has a losing record, and only three games on Denver's remaining schedule are above 0.500: KC (3-2)(2x), and HOU (4-2).

Things lighten up starting this week. Because the rest of the division isn't playing well (KC is a paper tiger, IMO), Denver still has playoff aspirations. If Denver can come out of the bye week @ 4-4, the back half of the schedule is littered with games vs KC and SD. By all means, Denver controls their own destiny from here on out.

Other interesting notes:

[*]Beadles started ahead of a healthy Harris. Not sure what that is about.

[*]D looked to be playing some 4-3 to make up for lack of depth @ LB, with Ayers being out. I'm glad the D has some versatility.

[*]Willis out for the season - will Decker finally get some snaps?

[*]running game showed some creativity for once. I think that's where the yards were coming from - being less predictable.

[*]Tebow has got to throw the football sometime. When he does, it will be great, but he will definately vulture FF points from Orton.

[*]Spencer Larsen loves to hit!

I'll take "Parenthetical Asides I Never Expected To Read" for $500, Alex!On the SoS: I hate any measure that's just a straight-up w/l% of opposing teams. I mean, by that method, a 1-0 team has faced an easier schedule than an 0-1 team, because the 1-0 team's opponent doesn't have a win yet! Massively flawed SoS metric.

On the other hand, Football Outsiders does a good job of accounting for nonsense like that, and they have Denver's past SoS ranked 1st, as well, so there is a lot of merit to this "toughest schedule in the NFL" talk. Worth pointing out that FO rates Denver's future schedule 29th, so things are about to get a lot easier for the Broncos. Also worth pointing out that the 49ers are also in line for a massive decrease in SoS strength. Prediction: both the Broncos and 49ers dramatically improve in the w/l column and the talking heads start going on about how they're "finally putting everything together".

Another fun schedule-related note that Broncos fans everywhere will love: San Diego's past schedule that they went 2-4 against... rates as 31st in the NFL. Their future schedule rates 14th. They actually choked against the easy part of their season.

In all fairness Ayers could have been considered the second best pass rusher on last year's team (second on the team with 22 pressures playing roughly 40% of the snaps) he just didn't convert those pressures into sacks. And he did have one sack in 2009 that was called back by a Dawkins defensive holding penalty

One bad loss and all haters coming out. This team did not show up. It happens but overall this season the Broncos have played well this season better than the record show.

One bad loss :goodposting: That was an epic beat down. The Broncos gave up 59 points in 3 quarters.Late in the game the Broncos went for it on 4th down from the 1 yard line; you know what happened. The only thing that kept Oakland from breaking the all time single game scoring record was them just taking their foot off the gas because the Broncos were so far behind.

4-13 in their last 17 games, with a team that wasn't in bad shape at all when McDaniels took it over. He has turned this team into a laughingstock.
 And keeping the starters in there in the 4th did nothing to help him with this team. He should have put 2nd stringers in and let the starters watch the disaster from the bench. If this team has a chance, then why risk getting your starters hurt in a blowout. I think he has lost this team.....The problem is, what do yo do now? If he is fired, someone gets this mess and has to try and find a way to clean it up. It would have to be an experienced coach with a nice resume and proven track-record and as been pointed out before, I am not sure those types of coaches would want this team.I think we, as Denver fans, are stuck with this train-wreck until the quiet off-season firing and search for new coach begins.

This was as embarrassing as a Halloween massacre that occurred in Indianapolis years ago on MNF.

I think this next game in London can make or break the career of McDaniels in Denver. The Broncos have to come out and be dominant against the 49ers. Hopefully this is the type of loss that can galvanise a team into performing up to their capabilities.

Would it really have surprised you if the Raiders had just scored again? Not me. The Broncos deserve any and all rips thrown their way for that pathetic effort.

Bad form of the Raider fans to come in and kick a dog while they are down.

Broncos will bounce back and the game in Oakland will NOT be a gimme for Oakland.

Oh stop. Anyone who has read me every day for a decade know I mean no malice*. Just having some fun.*Except when it comes to that punk BusterTBronco who comes into every Raider thread when we lose, but is a ghost when Denver sucks.

Raiders just scored again.....

:excited:
stay classy.
Stay classy? Wouldn't they have to be classy in the first place? You do realize you're talking about a Raiders fan, right?I dread the day Raiders fans become classy. Football's just not the same without someone to hate. :)
On a side note, in Arizona the only people who have Raiders Decals are people who have trucks/suvs and the driver is 250lbs+ and usually tats. A big dude you probably wouldn't want to mess with. On the contrary, the only people I see with Bronco logos are usually hicks. Go figure.

Raiders just scored again.....

yeah, I thought about that right after I hit "add reply", but never got around to fixing it. "Stay classy" was probably the nicest thing I could come up with - I'd like to keep my 8 year streak of not getting a TO in tact.

I have ignored the Broncos team thread until just about now. As a fan of the Raiders, I openly admit that I detest the Broncos. Hate them! Hate them! Hate them with venom! 0-16 is too good for them.

But I don't hate Broncos fans. I used to live in Colorado, and got along with Bronco fans wearing my Raiders jersey. We don't have to take our passion for our team to a personal level.

The kind of talk where someone talks about another's "class level" is very toolish behavior and part of the type of conduct that FBG Joe has warned about.

Please use intellect and reason to demonstrate your points, and not insult others. It only makes the point that you have nothing really compelling to say at all.

I also agree with an earlier post from another Raider fan that the "good natured ribbing" is a little over the top.
