A rather belated attempt to put all Jags news and notes in one thread.

Offseason acquisitions

Draft - Taking considerable flak both locally and nationally, the Jags concentrated on beefing up the line again, this time on the defensive side.

First 4 picks were DL including Tyson Alualu who has had nagging injuries in camp and d'Anthony Smith who has had a season-ending achiles injury.

They also beefed up their return area by drafting Deiji Karim and Scotty McGee.

Free agency/Trade - Kirk Morrison is in at MLB from Oakland. The still mending Aaron Kampmann (limited to one practice a day at camp) was added for pass rush.

G Justin Smiley was brought in from Miami.

For the first time in several years, WR was never addressed in the offseason.

Unfortnately, this was yet another year where a high profile QB was NOT bought in.

One other change of note, former Lions DL coach Joe Cullen (of naked drive-thru fame) was brought in. Reports from camp are that he has been a valuable addition.

Based on last year's pitiful sack total, there's only one way to go.

Unresolved Issues

Pass Rush - Last week in Philly, Jags got very little pass rush when it was 1s v. 1s. Of course, they were also missing Kampmann, Alualu, and Austen Lane among others.

What will it look like at full strength?

Safety - surprised they didn't address his in the offseason. Gerald alexander looks pretty set at strong safety.

Anthony Smith is supposedly edging ahead of former high draft pick Reggie Nelson at free safety.

Sean Considine is backup at SS and has a roster spot basically locked because of ST play.

Interior O-line - Jags took their OTs of the future last year. (Neither played in preseason Week 1 either before you press the panic button).

Supposedly Uche Nwaneri has the lead at LG with Brad Meester at C. Kynan Forney, Justin Smiley and Vince Manuwai are competing for RG.

This could be the end of the road for Manuwai. there had been talk of shifting Nwaneri to C but it appears that Meester is somewhat safe - for now.

QB of the future - No, I wasn't pressing for the Jags to take Tebow. But Garrard is clearly average (at best and with protection).

Right now, the QB depth chart looks like Garrard, Luke McCown and Trevor Harris from the football factory of Edinboro (Gene Smith loves the small college guys.)

Ugh.

Whither Troy Williamson? - Supposedly locked in a Wr battle with Tiquan Underwood. Since it looks like Mike Thomas has the lock on WR2, my money is on the younger cheaper guy who plays special team.

Ticket Update

Glass Half Full - Jags have added almost 14,000 new general bowl season ticket holders in a terrible economy with no marquee additions. Club seat tickets are up to almost 75% occupancy. Wayne Weaver on a fan conference call yesterday said that the first 3 regular season game will sell out and the 4th is close.

Glass half Empty - With all of the offseason programs to stir up fan support, Jags are 3,000 tickets short of guaranteeing sellouts. The schedule appears to be front-loaded. If the Jags struggle out of the gate, could be tough to sell out the last 4 home games (Houston, Cleveland, Oakland, Washington (day after Christmas)).

my post on this to this point will be simple.. there's a long way to go for the Jags..

BUT there is a reason that a top shelf football guy like Bill Polian believes the Jags could be "the most improved team in the AFC"..

so there may be some more "Diamonds in the Rough" here..

and most importantly, for those hoping for DL help..

keep your eyes on Larry Hart.. Rookie DE out of Central Arkansas..

Anyone know if the OL draftees (Britton, etc) play some this week? I'd like to see MJD get at least one yard rushing this week

Larry Hart was completely swallowed up in last weeks preseason game. I dont want to base his potential on one preaseason game, but his play left a lot to be desired. I agree with you that this team needs a lot of help. I dont see any reason to be optimistic. We are counting on the development of last years rookies along the current draft, which was mainly focused on the defensive line. Positives from preseason game #1:

Terrance Knighton was dominant

The rookie return men looked good

McCown played great

Negatives from preseason game #1:

Absolutely no pass rush at all, I didnt see any development in Harvey. He continues to be unable to shed blocks.

Garrard was Garrard. We cannot be a legitimate contender with this guy at QB.

Monroe is supposed to play this week. Alualu and Britton returned to practice yesterday but I doubt they play an exhibition game with such little practice.

I don't think you're ever going to see many sacks from Harvey, but at LDE, I think he looks decent against the run.I'm hoping Week 3 they get Harvey, Knighton, Alualu, and Kampmann on the field together.

If Alualu is as good as Gene Smith thinks he is the Jags should have an excellent defense against the run. Knighton is superb run stopper and all the LBs are fast and physical; along with Harvey's aforementioned run stopping ability.

Survived the Jags game the other night. Started out crammed into one of the concourse tunnels during the lightning delay. No air moving. Felt like Frosty The Snowman during the greenhouse scene. Finally made the way back to the exterior ramps and some air to wait out the 2 hour delay.

Positives

- Deji Karim and Scotty Mcgee looked great - as long as McGee holds onto the ball.

- Garrard had a better night passing and both MSW and Mike Thomas look ready to go.

- Bolen looked good enough that he might beat out Greg jones at FB.

- Marcedes Lewis with a tough catch in traffic and he has had a great camp.

- Alualu and kampmann got a good push initially but didn't do much the rest of game.

- Alexander had a nice play knocking he ball away down by the goal line.

- Austen Lane might be the definition of "high motor" guy, ran down a screen from the backside.

Negatives

- Don't know whether to blame the LBs or safeties, but can somebody cover the TE or back out of the backfield? Looked like all night Miami was running receivers away from one side of the field and then throwing to a RB or TE in that EMPTY space.

- Pass rush again was lacking at best.

- MJD with little room to run. The interior line got eaten up.

- Sobering sight - Reggie Nelson running with 2s and 3s in the 4th quarter.

- Like Nuke LaLoosh only being able to hit AAA pitching, Luke McCown showed that he is great against the backups but really lacking when having to produce against the 1's.

- Dolphins threw at Cox all night. Second week in a row for that. Don't now if teams are actually targettign him or it just goes with the territory because he was covering DeSean Jackson and Brandon Marshall.

Mystery

- Where was QB3 Trevor Harris? Jags trying to hide him on the practice squad and they don't want to show teams any tape?

Good news on the blackout front.

The Jaguars might not have tickets left to sell to the general public for the season opener against the Denver Broncos when they put regular season single-game tickets on sale Saturday, Macky Weaver, the team's senior vice president for sales and marketing, said Monday.

Current season ticket holders have first crack at single game tickets this week and are expected to buy the remaining tickets for Tim Tebow's first regular-season NFL game.

But Weaver said the Jaguars, who had 2,000 season tickets left to sell when they played their preseason home opener last Saturday, said the team will have single-game tickets available for the other seven games.

He said the Jaguars are on track to avoid a blackout for the first five games, including the fifth home game against Houston, which will be military appreciation day.

The last three games, against Cleveland, Oakland and Washington, will be challenging with as many as 8,000 to 9,000 tickets a game — including group sales — still unsold, but Weaver said he has some creative packages planned for those games. He is still hopeful of avoiding the blackout for all the games.

"I am feeling good," Weaver said. "It's not like some number that is not attainable."

Interesting ticket news on the Jaguars weekly radio show. First 5 games won't be blacked out. Last 3 games will be tough to sell though with the Browns, Raiders, and Redskins (12/26).

Other tidbit was the half-season pack without the Broncos & Tebow outsold the Tebow pack 2-1.

Jags should be near full strength on Sunday.

They had only two players — kick returners Scott McGee and Deji Karim — on their first injury report Wednesday. McGee missed practice with a shoulder injury, and Karim was limited with a thumb injury.Running back Maurice Jones-Drew, who sat out the past two weeks, wasn't on the report. Neither was defensive end Aaron Kampman, who is returning from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and didn't appear to have a wrap on his knee.
They're expecting a high Sunday of 91 with high humidity. Could be a factor in the 1:00 start. The whole crowd dynamic on Sunday should be interesting with the Tebowites vs the anti-Tebowites.

Well as bad as Garrard looked last week, it will be even worse if he gets hurt. Luke McCown out for he season with a torn ACL. Elderly Todd Bouman re-signed to be the backup.

Justin Durant is supposedly walking in a boot with a bad ankle but JDR is saying he might only miss a week.

1,600 tickets remain to avoid a blackout Sunday. With the everBank field agreement, that would likely make it cheaper for the jags to buy up the rest. (Jags have to repay EverBank 100K for every game blacked out).

This is ridiculous, Bouman hasn't thrown a pass in an NFL game since 2005.

LOL. Brilliant.Early line is Philly favored by 3 points. With Kolb starting, I"m considering opening a bodog account and hammering this.

How many teams have quality vet QBs on the roster as their QB3?

He's gonna be QB2.McCown is going on IR. Only other QB besides Garrard on roster is Brett Ratliff on the practice squad.Boumann is one Trent Cole sack gone wrong from trotting out on the field.
The Jaguars’ season now rests on David Garrard’s right arm.Any chance that backup quarterback Luke McCown could create a quarterback controversy if Garrard continued to struggle ended Monday when coach Jack Del Rio revealed that McCown suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament at the end of the 38-13 loss to San Diego on Sunday.McCown will now undergo reconstructive surgery on his right knee for a torn ACL for the second time since 2006 and will be placed on the injured reserve list today. The Jaguars will apparently bring in veteran Todd Bouman, who’s had three previous stints with the team, to replace McCown.Because Bouman, 38, wasn’t even in a training camp this year, he would likely get to play only if Garrard were injured. And Garrard has been a durable player, starting every game the past two seasons. The only other quarterback under contract is Brett Ratliff, who was signed to the practice squad after being cut by the Browns. Del Rio indicated he would remain the practice squad.

Understatement of the week -

"I don't want to speak for David, but he was largely ineffective," Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said in his postgame press conference.
I expected the Eagles to put up a bunch of points on the defense but the offensive display was pathetic. In large part, I thought the Jags d-line played a decent game and largely kept Vick in the pocket but the secondary was horrendous.I shudder to think of how many points the Colts put up next week.

Jaguars' Kassim Osgood pistol-whipped in attack

Receiver/special teamer was with 19-year-old when ex-boyfriend confronted them

Posted: September 29, 2010 - 10:01am

By Dan Scanlan

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Kassim Osgood had to leap out a second-floor window late Monday to escape a gun-wielding man who had attacked him and a 19-year-old woman he was visiting in a home in the 2000 block of Fort Caroline Road.

By the time it was over, the armed intruder traded gunfire with the woman after sticking a gun to her head, saying, “What did that football player say to his girlfriend, it’s a good day to die,” misquoting ex-Florida Gator Chris Rainey’s recent text message to a former girlfriend after an arrest, according to a Sheriff’s Office report.

Osgood, a Pro Bowl special teams player in his first season with the Jaguars, had some minor bruises from his escape and being pistol-whipped, the report said.

Julian Armond Bartletto, 20, of the 10500 block of Running Oak Court has been arrested on charges of aggravated battery, false imprisonment, armed robbery, burglary and violation of an injunction, police said. He was booked into the Duval County jail ineligible for bond, according to jail records.

Mackenzie Rae Putnal and Osgood, 30, were watching television in a second-floor game room just before 11:15 p.m. when a man walked in with his face covered with a plastic bag and pointed a gun at them. Exclaiming that “I can’t believe you’re with that guy,” he pulled Putnal around the room by her hair and hit her with gun and fists before hitting Osgood in the head with the weapon too, the arrest report said.

The gunman took the woman’s cell phone and tackled her when she tried to flee, holding the gun to her head as well as Osgood’s and also hitting her dog several times. When he ordered the couple to sit on the floor, Putnal escaped down a hall and leaped over the balcony to the floor below, the report said.

The gunman ran after her, so Osgood jammed a chair under the game room door handle and jumped out a window to the lawn below, running to a neighbor’s house to call police. Meanwhile, Bartletto and Putnal confronted each other downstairs with guns. The woman targeted him with her laser sight before both shot at each other and missed.

It's going to be painful to watch. Epic beat-down coming.

I'm mildly surprised the Colts aren't a double digit road favorite...yet.They are shuffling people around. They brought Gerald Alexander back and I was kinda puzzled why they released him at the start of the season. Not that he's the answer at safety but he's less of a liability than others and isn't as slow as Considine. It'll be interesting to see if JDR has decided that Derek Cox has regained his confidence.

the way Weaver looked sitting there last week in the second half..

I'm wondering if Jack will last the season unless some miracle turnaround happens..

they have worked too hard this off season to get to a place where people would come see the games..

and if the performance is this lackluster week in and week out.. (as much as I like JDR and his desire to do the right thing),

the axe has got to fall.. people need to see that they want to win "on the field" and not just in game attendance..

if the Mgt allows this to continue it will literally blow up whatever positives they were able to create this past off season

as far as fan attitude.. that's not necessarily saying a great deal anyway as it (fan attitude) wasn't the greatest to begin with!!

What is the state of the O line? I ask because I expected MJD and Garrard/MSW/Lewis to produce decent offensive production, and its been a disaster. Most of what I've read is along the lines of Garrard is underperforming / MJD is underperforming, but this has to go back to O line, doesnt it?

Monroe struggled against Trent Cole in passing situations and really the entire line did not play well. In running situations, the biggest problem is the middle of the line with Smiley and Meester.Really, the biggest problem in the running game is that nobody respects the passing game. Single coverage and bring up the safety.

More changes to Jags secondary? Also Considine was limited in practice yesterday.

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said he is pleased with Derek Cox's progress since the cornerback was benched after a rough season-opener.

Both Cox and Del Rio concurred that the cornerback tended to overthink things, and that was leading to mistakes.

"There was a time early in the year where he had a lot of clutter really going on," Del Rio said. "I mean things that were getting his attention that had nothing to do with playing cornerback for us and helping us win games, and he just needed to settle down."

"He's a young player. He cares a lot. He works hard. ... I think he's done the things that we hoped he would do, and he is settled down, and I think he is ready to play good football for us."

Cox was inactive in San Diego and was active but did not play against the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday.

Del Rio declined to say whether Cox would start this Sunday against Peyton Manning and the Colts. The Jaguars could have three starters in their defensive backfield who haven't played the past three weeks in Cox, safety Anthony Smith and safety Gerald Alexander, who was signed on Monday.
Also LB Justin Durant still isn't practicing.

Sunday's game against the Texans might be one of the more entertaining games of the day if you like offense. Two porous defenses play each other.

And to make matters worse, the Jags Dline has some injuries. The more serious is Kampman injuring his knee last night and he'll undergo an MRI today.

http://jacksonville.com/opinion/blog/42981...res-knee-during

Alualu was riding the bike but his injury isn't believed serious.

In the secondary, the Jags seem to have settled on Courtney Greene and Don Carey at safety. The guy to watch is Derek Cox. He is back starting at corner after time on the bench.

As far as offensive line, Vince Manuwai has officially won the LG job back from Smiley.

On the subject of blackouts, the Jags avoided one again this week, but they have some serious work to d next week against the Browns. 7,000 seats remain.

Kampman is out for the year with a torn ACL(other knee than the one he tore last year).

Garrard better be lighting up the scoreboard 'cause they have no way of stopping the Texans now.

This sucks. AK was the only player a could stomach watching on defense. You thought the D was bad before, watch out now...

I liked watching Alualu too, but his play will go downhill without the attention that Kampman got.

What a difference a couple of weeks make. After 2 come from behind wins against Houston and Cleveland, suddenly the Jags are 6-4. The two things that seemed certain a month ago were JDR getting fired and the Jags drafting a QB with a Top 10 pick. Jags are certainly a very flawed team (as seen by their horrendous point differential) that has won against some bottom dwellers and gotten blown out by good teams. But they could easily finish 8-8 or better. I don't that gets Jack fired. Jags obviously need some new blood at QB but if they're drafting at say 18 or 20, I don't know if they take what could be the 4th or 5th QB off the board in the first round, especially with all of the other holes.

Good things about the last few weeks-

- Knighton and Alualu are being very disruptive up front.

- They seem to have settled on Courtney Greene and Don Carey at safety and they bring in Considine in the nickel. While not a great combo, at least there are fewer blown coverages than earlier in the year.

- Jordan Black has not been the leaking sieve at RT that I was expecting

- Marcedes Lewis is having a career year and Zach Miller has been a nice compliment at TE

- Drrrreeeeewwwwwwwwwww!

Bad Things

- Kampman's loss will still be huge at DE. Larry Hart and Austen Lane are just too small to play against the run. I love the heart tha Lane plays with but he just can't hold the point consistently.

- Although they've played slightly better since Durant's return, the LB have been a weakness.

- Derek Cox seems to be getting back to last year's level at CB but Rashean is completely lost. Guys are running wide open by him.

- MIke Thomas is about the only WR that Garrard can count on. MSW is hurt and is rumored to miss another week. Underwood had a horrendous game. Osgood is what he is - a tremendous ST player. Don't know if we'll see them activate John Matthews or Jason Hill this week

I could've listed Garrad in either column but really all things considered, he's had a better year than I was expecting, honestly. And his WR at times have hurt him (especially last week).

I think this week's game aginst the G-Men is a big measuring stick game as to whether they are pretenders or contenders. Aside from the Colts game, whenever they've played good teams, they've not only lost, they've gotten blown out.

I think you'll see a whole lot of 2 TE formations given the Giants defense and also the lack of WR depth. To me the important thing for the Jags is to not give up a bunch of early points so they can stay with the running game. If the G-men go up 17-0 early, it will be a whole lot of Garrard running for his life.

If you would have told me prior to this season starting that this team would be 8-5 after 13 games, I would have called you crazy. Hell, if you said this after week 7, I would have laughed. Are they young and inexperienced? Yes. Do they have holes? Of course they do. But right now, I couldn't care less. They are fun to watch. I will give this team one thing- they are resilient. I've had more fun watching this years team than I have had in years. Saying that they face a huge game at Indy next week would be an understatement.

They better get Courtney Greene back for the one game playoff. Considine is a very good special teams player and a decent tackler but his lack of range at safety is a killer.

things have definitely gone in a positive direction..

(with the exception of a couple of injuries IE: Kampman and McCown)

the team has played hard.. and now opportunity knocks..

Bill Polian is known in most NFL circles as a top flight football guy..

so maybe he was on to something with his pre season comments regarding the Jags..

hopefully they go to Indy.. come out and smash mouth the ball down the field controlling the clock and put points on the board..

an early deficit and things could easily fall back to the "yeah but" experiences of past seasons..

reality is that there's a long way to go.. but as someone posted earlier..

if you'd have told me the Jags would be 8 and 5 at this point I'd have laughed..

I still believe we are in need of a QB upgrade.. be it via Draft or Free Agency..

and I do believe they will have the opportunity to get a good QB in the latter portion of round 1..

time will tell.. but either way.. this season has clearly been a pleasant surprise..

I'm hoping the Boumann signing is just precautionary.

Justin Durant and Courtney Greene are "out," which is no surprise, and Maurice Jones-Drew was limited in practice on Friday with a knee and is "questionable" for Sunday, which isn't surprising. 19 hours, 9 minutes agoDavid Garrard injured a hamstring on Thursday and is listed as "questionable" for Sunday's game. That's obviously not good news. 19 hours, 13 minutes ago
Tamme could have a big day with both Greene and Durant out.

I didn't feel like starting a new thread, so I'll just bump this one.

The draft depressed me a little because even though it might pan out in the long run there seemed to be no help for 2011.

Free agency started with upgrades at two LB positions. Morrison and Durant were both clearly part of the problem last year. Poz and Session might not be all-pro types, but they should be better.

Now they've added Dawan Landry. While this is definitely a talent upgrade at S, I am a little confused why they signed a guy who has exclusively been a SS when they have Greene who is clearly best suited to SS.

Anyway, all three guys we signed had over 100 tackles last year so that's something.

What do we still need?

WR - This is pretty obvious. I can't imagine they can be comfortable going into the season with Jason Hill or Jarret Dillard as a starter.

DE - I think this is a need (again). Mincey played very well at the end of the year and might have earned a starting role, but I just don't think we can count on Kampman at this point. Back-to-back years on the IR at his age is tough to come back from.

CB - It would be nice to upgrade from Derek Cox. Even if we stick with Cox, nickelback is a question.
